Liturgical Bits and
Bytes –Ministry Resources
The Penitential Rite
is an acknowledgement of our sinfulness in order to welcome God’s loving forgiveness;
is a hymn of praise and gratitude for the mercy and forgiveness which have already been given;
consists of several forms including the Lord, Have Mercy and the Confiteor (I confess to almighty God…);
is omitted when there is a sprinkling rite or another rite of welcome at the beginning of mass, for example, welcoming the body of the deceased person at a funeral mass, welcoming the inquirers as part of the Rite of Welcome into the Catechumenate, giving the name and signing with the cross of a baby about to be baptized.
Opportunities to Help & Volunteer
“When I was hungry, you gave me to eat.” ( Mt. 25)
Our pantry is in need of non-perishable items such as: cereals, peanut butter, jelly, canned
vegetables, fruits, and soups, tuna fish, crackers, non-refrigerated milk (ex. Parmalat), etc.
Our Parish pledged to #WalkwithFrancis—donating
to the Food Pantry is a good way to walk.
Are You Aware?
It has been our experience at times that
some people may feel they are not able
to receive Communion due to divorce
or other personal issues. Often times,
there may be a misunderstanding regarding Church
Teaching in these matters. You are encouraged to see Fr.
Gill, Deacons Jim, John or Tony for clarity so that you do
not miss the opportunity to celebrate the healing presence
of Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and in turn
come to the Table of the Lord.
Associated Vincentian Charities of Brooklyn Gives Back!
Immaculate Heart of Mary should share in the profits. For each car, truck or van, running or not the Society of t Vincent de Paul will give back to our church $50/$100 per vehicle. Maybe you don’t have a vehicle, but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or neglected vehicle in their driveway that they would like to dispose of. Call the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul at: 718.491.2525. Thank You!

FAITH BOOK 7th SUNDAY (A) February 23, 2020
Leviticus 19: 1-2, 17-18; 1Corinthians 3: 16-23; Matthew 5: 38-48
From today’s Gospel reading:
Jesus said, “For if you love only those who love you, What recompense will you have?
Do not tax collectors do the same?... So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Reflection:
We can see that Jesus is not interested in half-hearted, or part-time disciples. We can’t be good Christians only at home and when we gather at church. There are no boundary lines for Christian love, because God has not drawn boundaries around God’s love. God, not the world, is the standard for our love. To love in God’s way we will need to pray earnestly for help from God.
So, we ask ourselves:
♦ Whom do you find the most difficult to love?
♦ Have you thought about asking God to help you love that person?
During Lent, let us find concrete ways to
overcome our indifference. Pope Francis
“Let us protect Christ in our lives, so that we can
protect others, so that we can protect creation!”
Pope Francis

Dear Parishioner,
Have you checked your calendar lately? Lent is just around the
corner. With Ash Wednesday on February 26th you can find the Ash Wednesday Schedule on page 5 of this bulletin. Stations of the Cross will begin Friday, February 28th. We also want to provide you with a Lenten Resource Book. The book, “Lenten GOSPEL Reflections” by Bishop Robert Barron will be available this weekend. We ask that you take only one so everyone can have one. Our Lenten Speaker Series begins on Monday, March 2nd. Please mark your calendar and invite a friend to join us.
This week begins the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal. This year’s theme is “WE ARE THE CHURCH, TOGETHER”. Our goal this year is $45.500.00. I thank all who have participated with a gift to the 2019 Appeal and ask that everyone prayerfully consider making a gift to the 2020 Appeal.
The work and services made possible through your donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps people in Brooklyn and Queens in ways that no one parish can do alone. Please remain assured that your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal cannot be used in the settlement of abuse claims or for anything other than their intended purpose. You can watch the brief 2020 ACA Video online at: CFBQ.org/ACAVideo.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Connor Whelan as our new Music Director. Connor is a parishioner of our parish and has sung with our choir for many years and has subbed several times on the weekend and at funeral masses. We wish him all the best on his new venture and our prayers are with him.
Again, thank you for your continued generosity to our parish. You make all the difference in our continued ability to provide programs, events, & improvements in our church.

The Schedule for the Distribution of Ashes:
8:45 a.m. Mass
12:00 Noon Service of the Word
4:45 p.m.. Service of the Word (Children’s Faith Formation meets in Church!)
7:30 p.m. Mass
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, as well as all Fridays are days of Fast and Abstinence.
ABSTINENCE: The Church requires all the faithful who have reached their 14th year of age to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday (March 6th) and all Fridays of Lent. This means refraining from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Ab-stinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, or dairy products.
FASTING: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the fasting regula-tion on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is de-fined to mean only one full meal a day. Two other smaller meals may be had.
Prayer and Almsgiving
Prayer and Almsgiving are two of the time-honored tradi-tions of the Catholic Church during Lent. Most Catholics try to find time for extra prayer during Lent, either as indi-viduals, as a family, as parish groups, or by attending daily Mass. All are encouraged to spiritual development through reflection on the readings of the season, and by personal attempts to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. One of the ways we demonstrate our unity with Christ is to care for his/our brothers and sisters. Any form of charity, donations of time, talent, or treasure to benefit others can be viewed as almsgiving.

Baptism of Infants (Children age 7 years and younger)
Baptism Preparation Classes for families planning to have their child baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary will take place the first Saturday of every month at 11:00 a.m. in the Marian Center. Parents must
attend; sponsors are also encouraged to join us for the class. Families must be registered for the class prior to attending by contacting the Rectory. We will celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism on April 12th. And April 19th. You must be pre-registered and attend the Baptism Preparation Class held first Saturday of the month.
Baptism of Children (Children who have celebrated their
8th Birthday and older.)
Children who have celebrated their 8th birthday must participate in a process - The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children. This process takes place over three to five years and includes your child attending Faith Formation Classes and Mass regularly. This is a faith journey for both you and your child. When there is an appropriate readiness, your child is baptized, confirmed and receives Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Your child continues regular instruction in the Faith Formation Program for several years after their initiation. For more information contact the rectory.
Only Parents or Legal Guardians may register a child for
Baptism. No date is definite until you have completed all registration forms at the Rectory.
Sacrament Preparation News!
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The R.C.I.A. is designed for adults who have never been baptized, perhaps been baptized in another faith, or baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist and Confirmation. This is an opportunity to explore life in the Catholic Community, have a companion on your faith journey, prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, and/or Eucharist, and Confirmation).

Proximate Preparation Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation
All families registered in our parish who anticipate their children will receive Penance & First Eucharist (Communion) in the spring of 2020 or Confirmation in the fall of 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church must attend our Proximate Preparation Program. This would include children of our parish currently registered in Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy, other Catholic or Private Schools and/or our Children’s Faith Formation Program.
Children who worship in other parishes who will be attending Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy and wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary will need a letter from their pastor granting them permission to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
In addition, children of our parish who attend other private or Catholic Schools are encouraged to ‘come home’ to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Proximate Preparation is for parents and children to attend together.
As always, it is the expectation that all are attending mass regularly. Remember these are the Sacraments of Initiation, initiation into the worshipping community. For further information or clarification, please contact the rectory. To assist us in planning, please call to register if you are not attending our Children’s Faith Formation Program.
