Annonay, City of Inventors, witnessed revolutionary ideas for period. But it’s also a city with a strong industrial character : work of skins for the leather and the by-products industries, stationeries, manufacturing of coaches … All this wealth will be told to you during this visit, nice stroll around the streets…
Departure in front of the Old Cordeliers Convent, today the Theater and Annonay Tourist Board. Built in 1223, it gave its name to the square of Cordeliers. In front of the Tourist Board, there is a plate commemorating the 1st flight of a hot-air balloon on June 4th, 1783, invention of the brothers Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier. Cross the street and continue straight until you get to the bridge of Valgelas (1. It was an entrance to the fortified city from the XIIIth century. In height on the left, seen on Notre-Dame de Confiance, monumental virgin raised in 1943.
Beyond the bridge, to the right, go towards Vaults Soubise (2 , covered passage which circulated under old walls, of the name of the Lords of the city in the XVIIIth century, Rohan Soubise. Ride by the side street Barville where we find a typical door of the XVIth century (3 , in parecloses and studed, ultimate protection during this animated period of the Religious wars.
Turn left to arrive in the square of Liberté (4 . Meeting place of three unique streets allowing the access in town. It’s here that were exchanged all the products of the surrounding regions (valley of the Rhône, Dauphiné, the stéphanoise area and the Ardèche tray) thanks to the muleteers. From 584, a church was set up on the square, Notre-Dame, which will be destroyed in 1912. The statue represent an illustrious inventor of the city, Marc Seguin.
Take the staircases where Franki Kramer’s street begins (5 . For a long time, the «Main street», was the main road of the city. At the corner of the street and Doctor Barry’s street, small head sculptured of Roman era.
Also iron bars on both side walls, protection against the carts which passed in transit there.
On the right, go to the Grenette’ square (6 which owes its name to the Grain Market which was held under Les Halles. To note on the right a beautiful door of the XVIth century.
Take the Garden street and its voulted passage. The house with corbels was part to the first old walls of the city. Go on, until Sainte
Marie Convent (7 , built in 1630. Across from the chapel at n°17 in heigh, remnant of the old column partly fit in the facade. Memory of the Pilgrimage ?

Take the street Malleval until square of Backnang (8 , a German city twinned with Annonay. On lower level, the former industrial site of Faya (Canson), testimony of the papermaking tradition in Annonay. In the distance, we see the location of bus factory IVECO Bus. In 1913, Joseph Besset, an apprentice cartwright, settled his workshop at the corner of Backnang square (orange building).
Cross and go to the square of Champs de Mars (9 where there is the statue of Boissy d’Anglas. Lawyer and deputy of Ardèche, he distinguished itself by chairing the ses-
sion of the Ier Prairial de l’ An III (in May 20th, 1795). At the corner of the place, flan-ked by a tower, the building of the old hospital created in 1686 and its chapel built in 1704.
Go on towards the Bechetoille street (1 . Severals doors dating from XVI century. On the right, we see building of the former royal Baillage (1699) and jails.
Take on the left the Franki Kramer’s street. The new church Notre Dame was inaugu-rated in 1912. Go down street Poterne (1 . The big gate of the XVIIth with skylight in forged bars intregrated in the town walls belongs to an ancient fortified house.
Cross the square of Poterne and join the small street. Across from street, the Counsuls’ House (1 and its facade with mullioned and checkrail windows. Go down the street Franki Kramer until the n°15, the temple of the Reformed Church of France (1 since 1808.
Take on the right, the street Trachin. Marc Seguin was born at the n°12, with a nice skylight and monogram « MS » (1 . Marc Seguin is the inventor of the tubular boiler and the
suspension bridges with cables.
Go down the street Trachin, arrival on the street Boissy d’Anglas. On the left, the chapel of Trachin 15 dating from 1320.
Take the direction of the rise of the Castle. The front door of the castle . is the only remaining vestige, created in 1105 by Guigues III count d’ Albon.
Take the stairs of the castle, go back to the Tourist Board.
