The West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance has been serving the business community for almost forty years. During that time we have witnessed many changes to our area’s landscape north of Cincinnati, while recognizing the role I-75 and I-71 have played in growing and developing our northern suburbs. Southwestern Ohio quickly has become a key area of growth in Ohio and our Tri-State Region.

Our award–winning Chamber has also emerged as a recognized leader in connecting people and possibilities along the 75 and 71 “growth corridor”. Regional Business Expo – May 14 at Skatetown USA in West Chester“A taste of” luncheon featuring area restaurants preludes an exhibition of over 100 businesses and 1000+ attendees. It’s the largest showcase of businesses between Cincinnati and Dayton under one roof.

The Everest Award – July 18 at the Cincinnati Marriott NorthThis annual event is unprecedented and still one of a kind. The focus is on honoring leaders and legends on the “growth corridor” between Dayton and Greater Cincinnati. The Everest Award brings focus to the “growth corridor” while paying homage to the people who have helped shape it.

Women of Excellence – Friday, November 15 at the Cincinnati Marriott NorthFor 11 years this event has grown in popularity and has become a regional draw. On a Friday evening in november we recognize 10 extraordinary women for their accomplishments in making our area a better place to live and work.

To answer our members request for more business connections and information throughout our “growth corridor,” The Chamber Alliance is expanding its reach east into Mason and Deerfield and north along I-75 and I-71. Wetherington golf & country club Hires two new staff MembersChris Suriano is the new Membership Sales & Marketing Director. A native of Cincinnati, he was raised in Anderson Township where he graduated from Anderson High School. He later attended Miami University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management.

Upon graduation in 2006 Chris interned with the Cincinnati Bengals where he found his passion for sales. As a Seasonal Sales Representative he sold single game and season ticket packages. His success helped launch his career as a Membership Sales Associate with Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Crestview Hills, KY.

In the fall of 2008 Chris was promoted to Director of Sales & Marketing for Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Cincinnati, OH where he led his own team of Membership Sales Associates. Over the next 4 years Chris and his membership team continually experienced positive net growth. Ashley Greene is the newest member to join the Wetherington staff. She is originally from a small town in northwestern Ohio. Growing up around the catering industry inspired Ashley to pursue her career in the hospitality industry. After graduation, she moved south and studied Hospitality Management at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort.

In 2007, Ashley took a position as the Event Coordinator for the Funny Bone Comedy Club & Restaurant in Dayton. In 2009, she decided to move back south to accept a position as the Event Manager for the Greenville Drive, a Minor League Baseball Team affiliated with the Boston Red Sox. She handled all special events in the stadium, including: fundraisers, private team events, 5K runs, launch parties and more. In 2010, Ashley returned to the Funny Bone Comedy Club & Restaurant and was promoted to the Event Coordinator for both Dayton & Cincinnati Clubs.

tHoMas P. farrell aPPointed liberty toWnsHiP trustee

Liberty Township Trustees Christine Matacic and David Kern have appointed Thomas P. Farrell to the open Trustee position which became vacant following the February 19 resignation of former Trustee Patrick Hiltman. Farrell has lived in Liberty Township for 14 years, has served in a volunteer capacity on the Liberty Township Zoning Commission for nearly 10 years and most recently as a member of the Vision Plan Committee.

Farrell is a small business owner, serving as president of Alternative Computer Technology in West Chester. He also serves as president of the Four Bridges HOA and currently serves on the Boards of Bishop Fenwick High School and the Atrium Medical Center Foundation.

“We are excited about this announcement and look forward to the business perspective Tom will bring to the Board. His dedication to the community and his extensive background and network will serve the residents and businesses of Liberty Township well. He’s enthusiastic about the vision and direction of Liberty Township and will be a tremendous asset to our Board,” said Christine Matacic, President, Liberty Township Board of Trustees.

Matacic and Kern had 30 days following Hiltman’s resignation to appoint a new Trustee to complete the vacated term. Farrell will serve through December 2013. If he is interested in continuing service as a Liberty Township Trustee, he will need to follow the Butler County Board of Elections requirements to be placed on the ballot in november 2013 for a four-year term which will begin January 2014.

“I’m humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve the residents and businesses of Liberty Township and to work alongside Christine and Dave. I’m ready to take my involvement in Liberty Township to the next level and to help perpetuate responsible growth and family values, while

representing the best long-term interest of the residents. It’s an exciting time to be living and working in Liberty Township,” said Farrell.

“Tom’s business background and commitment to the Liberty Township community is impressive. I’m confident we have selected someone who will leave a positive impact on this community,” said David Kern, Liberty Township Trustee.

Farrell holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton and graduate degree from Harris University of Florida. He lives in Four Bridges with his wife Kim and three children – Chelsea, a sophomore at Hillsdale College, Brady, a senior at Bishop Fenwick, and Kyle, a sophomore at Bishop Fenwick.

GREAT SUMMER EVENTS OFFER BOOSTTO TOURISM & LOCAL ECONOMYConcerts, BBQ, water skiing, weightlifting and more are all part of the great summer ahead in West Chester Township.

West Chester’s central location and quality amenities have captured the attention of the travelling public adding benefit to the local economy and bringing great events to the community’s door step.

Nine hotels are available in West Chester to accommodate visitors with a total of 1,036 rooms. These local hotels benefit from a diverse customer base including corporate executives in town for business and young athletes participating in tournament activities. Hotels realize direct benefit from these guests, and West Chester benefits from a 3-percent bed tax that is collected based upon visitors staying at local hotels. In 2012, this hotel tax generated nearly $800,000 in revenue for the Township.

While business travel associated with prominent stakeholders such as AK Steel, General Electric, GE Aviation and Procter & Gamble accounts for considerable hotel business locally, many also stay here for great events. Working with the Butler County Visitors Bureau, West Chester is gaining popularity as a destination for leisure travel.

While the proximity and accessibility to the Cincinnati Reds and the Bengals make West Chester a great location for a visit, there are many local sporting events that also bring visitors from all over the country. The West Chester Baseball Complex (WCBC) supports national-level tournaments during the baseball season. As they begin the 2013 season, the West Chester Baseball Complex will host 13 separate regional tournaments.

In 2013, MetroParks of Butler County and the Butler County Visitors Bureau will host six national championship events in West Chester. The Natique WWA Wakeboard National Championships will be in West Chester again this July bringing more than 200 competitors from all over the country in pursuit of national

titles. Just a short time later, The Voice of America Park will host the USA Triathlon Youth and Junior National Championships for the second year. This year’s triathlon event is expected to bring 900 youth and junior competitors, along with their families, for the weekend-long event. The USA Triathlon and Junior National Championship event alone is expected to have an estimated economic impact of over $700,000.

The Seventh Grade AAU Girls Basketball National Championship will also return to the area in 2013

bringing more than 100 teams from around the country. These teams fill hotels

county-wide and bring an estimated $1.8 million into the county’s economy.

If it is food and music you prefer, The Rotary Club of West Chester/Liberty is bringing competitive BBQ teams from around the region to the Voice of America BBQ Bash May 17th and 18th. Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society

as the Buckeye State BBQ Championship, the event will of course feature great BBQ and blues music presented by the Cincinnati Blues Society. For more on the event, visit voabbqbash.org.

The fifth season of First Financial Bank After-Hours on The Square kicks off May 23 signaling the official start of summer in West Chester. The Thursday night free concerts on The Square @ Union Centre are 6 to 9 p.m. featuring great regional bands, food, beer and more.

This year’s concert schedule features favorites like DV8, Naked Karate Girls and My Sister Sarah, with new favorites such as Color Blind, Stays in Vegas and Lt. Dan’s New Legs.

All concerts are free and are presented by First Financial Bank. Sorry, but alcohol cannot be brought into the park.

This marks the 11th season for the Saturday night concert series that has drawn families to the Keehner Park Amphitheatre. The concerts are 7 to 9 p.m. and appeal to a wide variety of musical tastes.

This year’s schedule includes big band tunes, bluegrass, western swing , steel drums and good old classic rock-n-roll. New this year is Azucar Tumbao performing salsa music with a dance instructor ready to get the audience on their feet.

The West Chester Symphony will perform their traditional Labor Day concert on Sept. 2 and will provide the musical accompaniment to the community’s ice cream social on June 29th.

The YMCA is a staple of the America culture. The first YMCA in the United States opened on December 29, 1851 in Boston, Massachusetts and provided an opportunity as a “home away from home” for young sailors on shore leave. By 1855 members paid an annual membership fee to use the facilities and during the second half of the century, the Boston YMCA established branch divisions to satisfy the needs of local neighborhoods.

Today, the YMCA serves more than 17.5 million members in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. One of those is the Great Miami Valley YMCA Association which includes 6 branches, 1 camp, 4 full time children’s centers and numerous before and after child care centers. Bridget Behrmann, Executive Director of Healthy Living and Marketing is a native of Cincinnati and a graduate of University of Findlay, University of Cincinnati and Xavior University with a BS in Athletic Training, BS Health Education and Master of Sport Administration.

Bridget started her career over 14 years ago as Senior Wellness Director and quickly promoted to Associate Executive Director at the East Butler County YMCA. She then served as the Executive Director of the Fairfield Family YMCA for 6 years. In 2012 Bridget took on her current role as Executive Director of Healthy Living and Marketing at the association office. Her duties include corporate wellness, wellness programming and marketing for all 6 branches.

Bridget became involved with the West Chester ▪ Liberty Alliance to connect, at another level, with the community. She believes it is important to know the community that the YMCA serves and looks at the Chamber as an avenue to accomplish this goal, allowing her to understand the needs and to identify potential business partners. Bridget states, “I highly recommend anyone who works and lives in the area to become more involved with the Chamber. The staff welcomes you and is willing to help your business. I cannot compliment the great team enough for the openness to help in every facet of your business and we are very lucky to have such a Chamber in our community.”

There was a change in the air at the West Chester Liberty Alliance April luncheon. Members and guests had a spring in their step and a smile on their face as spring had finally come! The audience was eager to hear from Tracy Murray, General Manager of Delhi Flower and Garden Centers, about spring “Curb Appeal.”

However, first things first: Emcee, Christine Matacic, Liberty Township Trustee President welcomed the members and guests! Several announcements were made including a thank you to the Luncheon Sponsors - First Financial Bank and Four Bridges Country Club; spotlighting the Chamber’s Young Professional Group – nEXT; Ambassador of the Quarter recognition to Jillian Kelley, Dingle House Irish Pub & Grub; the new Leadership 21 class beginning in September and #CreativeForum, a new event to be held on May 17th at M/I homes in Liberty Township that is being hosted by the Chamber’s Marketing Team.

The podium was adorned with several types of spring flowers capturing our attention. Guest speaker, Tracy Murray started off her talk with “Curb Appeal, how can your business enhance its appeal?” You could see everyone attentively listening. She gave us OUR opinion of curb appeal; shrubs and fresh mulch! Tracy then provided two examples of curb appeal: the first example was one that failed to gain curb appeal to the customers such as a grocery store with restrictive parking, small entry doors, and some potted flowers for sale out front, trash in the grocery carts, depressing music and smells of fish. not an experience that Tracy would remember fondly.

The second example was Jungle Jim’s. Tracy described the curb appeal as starting before she arrived in the parking lot, seeing palm trees. She describes the sounds of monkeys and elephants, sweet smells and well planned traffic flow within the store. Tracy explains how they are selling an adventure and setting the tone for the customer’s experience. “What experience are you trying to sell at your business?” she asked. “What do you want your clients to feel?” Tracy recommends that business people need to take the mood of their business outside by using specific gardening and landscaping ideas. It all made sense and at the perfect time as attendees seemed eager to get to work on her ideas!

Tracy then took several questions from the audience, including questions about crabgrass prevention and the use of pre-emergence products to provide us with less work in pulling those nasty weeds. She also provided opinions on the use of generic versus brand name products, cool weather flowers and the dreaded Canadian thistle. We were now ready to spring into action and change our curb appeal to reflect our homes and businesses, all thanks to Tracy Murray and Delhi Flower and Garden Centers. I want to share with you a story about a very enterprising student, and how he came to the attention of one of our fellow Chamber Alliance members.

Each month four Lakota high school students attend the Chamber luncheon. We select different students every month so that many young people get to have this important experience.

Gannon Joyner, a Lakota East junior, was one of the students at a recent luncheon. Britt Scearce, a business development executive at Emery Federal Credit Union, was speaking that day. “He came up to our table and we talked for a while,” Gannon said. “I asked him about his work and what he had studied in college. Then we talked more after the lunch.”

Britt said he was immediately impressed with Gannon. “He had a suit and tie on, and he looked sharp and was professional and engaging. Then he immediately followed up with an email to me, reaching out again, sending me a resume. I forwarded it on to the right folks, and he must have impressed them too.” Britt said that Shelly O’neill, Emery’s vice president of operations, decided to hire Gannon as a member service representative.

“The thing about the Chamber lunches and networking,” Britt said, “is that you shouldn’t just eat, listen, clap and leave. You should sit with someone you don’t know and talk to people and build

relationships. That’s what Gannon was doing.”

Gannon said he’ll be resigning from his two other jobs so he can start with Emery…and that is in addition to going to school, of course. He’s a solid student but said “people are more interesting than worksheets.”

“I find people intriguing,” Gannon said. “I’m focusing on working and developing people skills.” He said that participating in Junior Statesmen of America at school help him develop confidence in his speaking skills.

“We had a need,” Britt said, “and timing is everything. One day I’m talking with Gannon at a luncheon, and they next thing you know, he’s coming on board with us. It’s great to see something like that work out.”

Seeing our students connect with the business community is important. It broadens their education beyond the classroom and helps develop tomorrow’s workforce. Sometimes it can all start with lunch.

Q. Will a merchant be in violation of the credit card acceptance rules if they charge a surcharge on a credit card sale?

A. no. In July, U.S. banks and U.S. merchants reached a settlement with VISA and MasterCard regarding accessing surcharges on credit card transactions. With this settlement, VISA and MasterCard removed the rule that prohibited merchants from charging a fee to accept a credit card.

Q. When Can Merchants Start Adding Surcharges?

A. The new regulations were put into effect January 27, 2013. Surcharges can only be added to credit card transactions and CAnnOT be charged on PIn debit or pre-paid cards

Q. How will a customer know if they are being accessed a surcharge?

A. A merchant must provide clear disclosure by indicating the amount of the surcharge fee at the point of sale as well as display the dollar amount on the receipt.

Q. Is there a Cap on the surcharge?

A. Surcharge amounts must not exceed the merchant’s average cost of accepting credit cards, capped at 4%.

Q. Can a merchant offer a discount on non credit card sales?

A. Yes. Merchants may offer a discount to their customers if they pay with cash, check or a debit card.
