The History of ‘Annie’The story of Annie is based on the comicstrip Little Orphan Annie created by HaroldGray which ran in the Chicago Tribunenewspaper.

Her transition from new paper comic stripheroine to international musical star beganin 1971 when Martin Charnin wasbrowsing in a New York bookshop tryingto find a Christmas present for a friend. Hecame upon a collection of Annie cartoonscalled Little Orphan Annie: Her Life and HardTimes. Charnin read it the same eveningand the friend never got the book! Hecame up with the idea of basing a musicalaround the character Annie and contactedcomposer Charles Strouse and playwrightThomas Meehan to suggest they look atthe book.

In the spring of 1972, the three discussed their ideas and began working on the script for amusical. It took sixteen months to complete. Charnin and Meehan decided to set the musicalin Depression era New York, which they felt would further emphasise Annie’s brave andpositive attitude to life. In 1976, Michael Price of the Goodspeed Opera House in EastHaddam, Connecticut agreed to do a production. Casting for the show began in May and thefirst performance was given on 10 August 1976. Charnin paid $8 for a dog at the local pound- the first Sandy! Though critics were lukewarm and the New York Times reviewer said it didn'thave a chance, the show increased in popularity and was extended from 10 to 13 weeks.

On April 21, 1977, ‘Annie’ opened at the Alvin Theatre in New York City. It played 2,377performances, the seventh-longest run in Broadway history at that time. The show won TonyAwards for best musical, best score and best book. The cast album sold more than 1 millioncopies. The show went on to be produced in 17 languages. In all, it has grossed more than$350 million. In 1981 the story was made into a film but never came close to challenging thepopularity of the stage show.

The Birkdale Orpheus Society first performed ‘Annie’, in 1985 (see rear cover of programme!)and again in 1992 and 2005. Nearly forty years after she first took to the stage and overninety since she first appeared in print, Little Orphan Annie is still touching the hearts andimaginations of audiences all over the world!

Chairman’sWelcome

May I wish you a warm welcome to SouthportLittle Theatre and this production of ‘Annie’, whichI hope you will enjoy as much as we have.

‘Annie’ is a warm-hearted show that appeals to allages, opening on Broadway in 1977, this musicalbecame a runaway success and numerousproductions have followed in multiple countries. Afitting end to a successful two years and my lastshow as Chairman of our society.

I am exceptionally proud of all that our society hasachieved in this time. ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Oliver!’ in 2015,to ‘42nd Street’ and ‘Annie’ this year, our society hasgrown from strength to strength performingincredible feats that have amazed and entertained.

I couldn’t be more proud of our successes and I am thankful for the support I have receivedduring my chairmanship. I would like to thank everyone who has given of their time andefforts.

We have several new and young cast members in this show and working with them hasbeen an absolute pleasure, a very talented bunch who we hope to see more of in the future.

I would like to thank our wonderful production team, Liz, Charles and Steve, who have eachinstilled their magic into our cast and brought ‘Annie’ to the stage. I would also like tothank all those ‘unseen’ volunteers, ticket sellers, front of house, matrons and all, withoutwhom the show would not be possible. Finally thank you, our audience, you make it allworthwhile.

Please do encourage others to support amateur theatre, without your support we wouldbe unable to stage the calibre of production you will see before you today. Our hardworking cast truly deserve great audiences and your recommendation can make thathappen.

Sit back and relax as we take you for a walk down ‘Easy Street’…

Director’s NotesIn 1924, the comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’ was born, making its debut on August 5 in the NewYork Daily News. The comic strip’s creator, Harold Gray, was an outspoken critic of government, big business and the corrupt establishment that ran on greed. Although originally intended forchildren, adults were intrigued with its political commentary and by 1937 it had become thenation’s number one comic strip.

The plot follows the wide-ranging adventures of Annie, her dog Sandy and her benefactor Oliver‘Daddy’ Warbucks and was the inspiration for a radio show, film adaptations and finally in 1977,the Broadway musical. Set during the ‘Great Depression’, the comic strip reflected the timesdealing with themes of unemployment, homelessness, hunger, poverty and a stock market outof control. However where Gray emphasised the darker side of humanity, the Broadway musicalfocused on Annie’s optimistic and ever-sunny nature.

It has been a joy to work with Charles, Steve and such a talented cast who have rehearsedtirelessly over the summer. ‘Never work with children or animals’ is an old show business adage;however, I have been particularly impressed with the professionalism and enthusiasm of ourorphan girls. They have worked so hard and made rehearsals such fun.

I must also say a special thankyou to Estella and her husband Paul, along with Pine their familypet dog. Pine came to us with no prior stage experience, however she has been in ‘puppy school’for the last couple of months, rehearsing for her stage debut! She has touched our hearts andwe are sure you will love her performance as Sandy!

We can all learn from Annie’s ‘glass half full’ attitude. Without optimism there is no hope! Hopefor the future lifts the human spirit and leads to a more positive outlook. I believe Annie isabsolutely right and in our moments of self-doubt we should all believe that tomorrow is ONLYa day away and the sun WILL come out!

Spotlight on Pine aka ‘Sandy’Pine was born on the same day as Princess Charlotte of Cambridge on 02/05/2015. She wasthe largest of a litter of six and is a combination of the owner’s son’s two dogs - a Jack Russell(Mum) and a Shih Tzu (Dad). Pine lives with her little sister Lottie (one had to be named afterPrincess Charlotte!) and got her name due to the fact that no one wanted her! After aconversation between family, it was said ‘she should be called Pine!’, when asked why, the answerwas simple ‘the song, on the trail of the lonesome pine’ - lonesome and pine being the inspirationby Laurel and Hardy, the name stuck!

Pine has a placid nature and loves people. This is her first role on stage and her owners havethoroughly enjoyed training her for the part, with the assistance of trainer Sami Cummins. BOSis indebted to Pine’s proud owners, Paul and Estella Reynolds, and we extend our heartfeltthanks to you both for your support with our production of ‘Annie’.
