The New Year brings many changes to the Anne Arundel County Public Library system. Most exciting are the expanded hours at 12 of the libraries (see the back cover for a complete schedule). But these hours are just the beginning of a renaissance of library service in this county.

Along with our fresh approach to early literacy and STEM education, we are moving forward with the replacement of the Annapolis Area Library with the funding so graciously provided by County Executive Laura Neuman and the members of the County Council. We look forward to the day that this library becomes a gathering place for residents throughout the southern region to pursue knowledge, entertainment and community engagement. In fact, we want this idea of a community gathering space to apply to all of our libraries. To reinforce this

goal, we are adding the words “community library” to 12 of our branch names and will be making changes, both dramatic and subtle, to add to the appeal of these libraries. Sometime in the future, we will begin to refer to the Annapolis, North County and West County Area Libraries as the Annapolis, Odenton and Glen Burnie Regional Libraries, to reflect their status as larger, better-appointed facilities designed to serve a population beyond their immediate neighbors. In the meantime, we are also renaming the South County and Provinces Branches. Come January 26, they will be known as the Deale and Severn Community Libraries respectively, to recognize the communities these libraries serve. As President of the Library’s Board of Trustees, I am excited by the direction in which our library system is headed. We are proud of our ability to serve each and every resident of Anne Arundel County and invite all of you to follow along as we grow and to take advantage of all that the library has to offer.

Library Happenings! December 2013, January and February 201418 19Anne Arundel County Public Library

I was raised in a big family where trips to the library were a happy weekly event. My most vivid library memories are from the summers we spent in Rehoboth Beach, DE.

Library Hours ExpandedExciting times have arrived at the Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL), no matter which library – or libraries – you use! Whether you go to Brooklyn Park, Edgewater, Broadneck or ANY of our 15 locations, staff are preparing for the new era of service that we’ve been talking about for months! The County Executive and County Council heard you last spring and voted to fund ex-panded hours starting in 2014. Beginning January 26, the libraries in Severna Park and Crofton will re-open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. to give us five libraries with operating hours on Sundays from September to May every year. The other three are West County, Annapolis and North County Area Libraries.

Even more exciting is the fact that, from that day on, ALL libraries will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Monday through

Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. (See back cover for full schedule.) This will mark the first time that libraries throughout Anne Arundel County all will have the same schedule. No longer do you have to scratch your head and ask, “Is the library open this morning?” or “Is the library open after work today?” You can browse the collection, use the public PCs and WiFi, attend programs – and see friends and neighbors among the stacks – just about whenever you think of it! This is a tremendous improvement for the many county residents who rely on our services, materials and spaces! We finally have joined the many other library systems throughout the state and the nation that are open for business during the hours that our customers want them. We are truly pleased.

Finally, as I discussed in the last issue of Happenings, we will begin our new focus on Early Literacy this spring. As a result of hiring new staff for the expanded hours and restructuring jobs of some current staff, every branch will have Early Literacy Specialist Librarians to create research-based, developmentally appropriate programming for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and families – as well as more morning hours in which to offer them.

As a unified team of dedicated staff throughout our 15 branch libraries and our headquarters, AACPL is proud to serve you!

My Library Story

My mother would send us on our bikes to the library almost daily. In hindsight, that must have been her way of getting us out of the house. I would welcome the break from the summer heat, get a drink from the ice-cold water fountain and find a comfy beanbag to read anything and everything that interested me. I would thumb through the Encyclopedia and issues of National Geographic, and devour book series like Nancy Drew and C.S. Lewis. There were many times when I left only when the library closed.

My parents held up my older brother Tim as a library superstar. By fifth grade, he had read every book in the library and went on to get a perfect score on the SATs. That is when it clicked that the library had a magic power – it must make kids smart.

As an adult, I now know the importance of the public library. In terms of childhood development, it ranks right up there with playing at the park and riding a bike.

My husband and I are blessed with eight children. We strive to ensure that each one knows the magic of a good book. One of my greatest ideas was turning our unused living room into a “reading” room. I replaced the sofa with two comfy chaise lounges, and on any given day you’ll find someone curled up reading a book. We often compete for the chairs and even end up sharing. This room also helps me keep track of the dozens of library books we check out. It’s my rule to leave all of the library books in the reading room. This quiet room is my favorite in our house.

We take advantage of numerous libraries, but favor the Eastport-Annapolis Neck branch, as it is closest to home. Our four year-old loves the computer learning games, puzzles, puppets and enjoys selecting videos and books to bring home. My eight year-old took an amazing chemistry class there this past summer. I so appreciate the library offering such an intelligent and fun class for free! Of course, we love the summer reading program, including getting all of the prizes and coupons and charting our reading progress.

The library has so much to offer! Everyone in our big family can find something of interest. We usually go in to browse and leave with armfuls of books that we can’t wait to begin. We feel lucky to have such a clean, well-organized, fun library with awesome librarians!

-Catherine Castro, donor and loyal customer of the Anne Arundel County Public Library
