[email protected] 9/1/2017 Glyphosate Question An email last week that was sent to me from a landscape manager inquired about use of glyphosate around the base of shade trees and it potential uptake by the roots. We asked Dr. Jeff Derr, Weed Specialist at Virginia Tech Experiment Station for a clarification. Here is what he said:

Once glyphosate (the active in Roundup) hits soil it is bound and unavailable to plant roots. As long as the herbicide was kept off foliage and bark, directed sprays will not lead to death of trees. For one to kill well-

established trees, one would have to spray the herbicide on a good bit of the tree foliage to have a sufficient amount absorbed.

If glyphosate contacts suckers it can translocate to the rest of the tree, especially in late summer/fall, causing some systemic injury. It is best to clip off suckers immediately after application to stop any movement.

Lace bug on the Most Unusual Places - A landscape manager that is currently maintaining a high end landscape also takes care of the customer’s vegetable garden. Yes – gardening for the rich. The landscape manager brought in an eggplant with stippling damage to the foliage. It was loaded with lace bugs. Not the lace bug we see on azaleas, or pieris but a species called genus, (common name Egg plant lace bug) . It operates a lot like sycamore lace bug and cotoneaster lace bug with the adults overwintering in leaf debris.

In mid May to late May female lace bugs deposit eggs on the underside of eggplant leaves and remain to guard the eggs and developing nymphs. Several species of other species of lace bugs have this guarding instinct and will ward off predators. Nymphs cluster together as they grow and pass through 5 instars before reaching the adult stage. Newly emerged adults disperse to new plants. Complete development from egg to adult takes about 20 days in mid to late -summer. There can be up to 4 or 5 generations a year. Jerry Brust, our commercial vegetable IPM Specialist, has information on control of this pest on the web. White Prunicola Scale It is time for the 3rd generation of white prunicola scale Pseudaulacaspis prunicola . I had 3 emails last week asking if crawlers of the scale had emerged yet. What I need is twig samples with the scale to be sent to us at the Central Maryland Research and Education Center, Univ of MD, 11975 Homewood Road, Ellicott City, Maryland 21042. I would love to get samples from various parts of the state so we can see where the crawlers are emerging in early September.

Another scale that should be emerging as crawlers soon I is the tulip tree scale on magnolia. If you have samples please send them in so we can see if crawlers are emerging yet. Thanks

Mosquito Control Update Modified mosquitoes used to contain dengue fever in Brazil By Sonny Ramaswamy Director, National Institute of Food and Agriculture United States Department of Agriculture August 30, 2017 Brazilian scientists release the first batch of “modified mosquitoes” in an effort to contain the spread of dengue fever. The scientists infected millions of mosquitoes with a bacteria, which prevents the insects from transmitting the

disease to humans. The Wolbachia bacteria blocks the dengue fever virus in mosquitoes, and is harmless to humans. The government-backed initiative, undertaken by the Fiocruz Institute in Rio, is aimed at decreasing the number of human casualties from dengue fever. The technology of mosquito-modification was developed in Australia. Scientists hope the mosquito’s will disseminate the bacteria among the insect population. Roughly one million mosquitoes will be released each week to start. http://www.oann.com/modified-mosquitoes-used-to-contain-modified-mosquitoes-used-to-contain/ View inks to all of the Horttips newsletters. Wheels Up

A Maturing Farming Business Management Assessment Program

Upper Marlboro, MD – Have you been farming for more than 3 Years? Are you ready to move from your start-up “Survive” business model to a better “Thriving Business” model? Do you have an established farming operation but need to improve your management and profitability in a specific management area? A new training program, “Wheels Up”, offered in partnership between the University of Maryland Extension and Future Harvest-CASA, may be the business up-grade training you need to help your business “take off.”

The "Wheels Up" program is for farmers with 3 or more years of business experience. As their businesses have grown and matured, critical issues have surfaced that were never anticipated in the original start-up plans. They now know what their businesses strengths and weaknesses are, but not how to correct or improve their situation. Very often the timing of these growth decisions comes simultaneously with increasing demands of family, community, and/or off-farm employment.

The program will consist of 4 class sessions plus "one-on-one" consultation support by appointment at the conclusion of the training. Class components: revisiting mission and goals and handling change in a business, addressing production and human resource challenges, understanding what a financial statement can tell you, and developing diversified marketing strategies. Since each participant will have a different priority for their business, each participant will also create their own learning contract to be completed by the conclusion of the project.

The 4 class sessions will meet at the Prince George’s Soil Conservation District

Location: 5301 Marlboro Race Track Road, Large Conference Room, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 When: Tuesday evenings in October from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the following dates:

Tuesday, October 3 - Revisiting mission and goals and handling change in a business. Tuesday, October 10 - Addressing production and human

resource challenges. Tuesday, October 17 - Developing diversified marketing

strategies. Tuesday, October 24 - Understanding what a financial

statement can tell you.

The tuition cost is $45 per person which includes all materials. Registration is through the University of Maryland Extension Eventbrite on-line system at: https://wheelsupclasses-october2017.eventbrite.com or by calling 301-432-2767 ext. 301.

For further information about workshop content, contact Ginger S. Myers, University of Maryland Extension Specialist at [email protected], 301-432-2767 ext.338.

Maryland Agriculture Secretary Urges

Farmers to Participate in the USDA National Agricultural Statistics

Survey August 31, 2017 Maryland Agriculture Secretary Joe Bartenfelder is urging farmers across the state to participate in upcoming agricultural surveys by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). NASS will be conducting its small grain production survey in early September. The agency is using this survey to asses the 2017 production and supply of small grains, which include, wheat, oats, barley, and rye. “NASS surveys produce the most credible agricultural data available,” said Secretary Bartenfelder. “The information obtained by these upcoming surveys help to inform everyone from farmers to lawmakers and will surely have an impact on the agriculture industry in our state. I urge all Maryland farmers to participate in the surveys so we can make sure that everyone is working with the most accurate data possible.” NASS will contact Maryland survey participants in the first two weeks of September. In an effort save time and money for growers, participants will have the option to respond to the survey securely online instead of mailing the forms back to the agency. Farmers who have not responded by September 7 may receive a phone call from a NASS representative who will help them fill out the survey form. “The small grains industry is a big player in Maryland agriculture and it is crucial for us to have accurate data about this key sector of the economy,” said NASS Maryland State Statistician Dale P. Hawks. “We will contact more than 750 producers in Maryland to accurately measure 2017 acreage, yield, and production for small grains. The data collected from this survey will also help set small grain acreage and production estimates at the county level.” NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents and publishes only aggregate data, ensuring that no individual operation or producer can be identified.

Survey results will be published in several reports, including the annual Small Grains Summary and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on September 29. These and all NASS reports are available online atwww.nass.usda.gov. For more information call the NASS Maryland Field Office at (800) 675-0295.

Nutrient Management Plan Writing Workshops Offered September 19 and 26 The Maryland Department of Agriculture and University of Maryland Extension will offer two, one-day workshops titled, How to Write a Nutrient Management Plan September 19 at the Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown and September 26 at the Montgomery Extension Office in Derwood. The workshops are designed for people who are new to the nutrient management plan-writing process. Participants will learn how write a nutrient management plan using NuMan Pro, the nutrient management planning software program while earning six credit hours toward the Maryland Nutrient Management Program’s continuing education requirement. To register, call 410-841-5959 or visit the department’s website for a registration form. Cost is $20. The registration deadline is September 15. Homeowners Urged to Use Responsible Lawn Care Practices During Summer Months With summer in full swing, the Maryland Department of Agriculture urges homeowners to allow established lawns to go dormant during the hot, dry weather. Applying fertilizer to force a lawn to turn green during its dormancy period can damage the grass and contribute to nutrient pollution in streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. Dormant lawns will green up when cooler temperatures arrive and rainfall increases. To help shade grass and conserve moisture, raise the mower’s cutting height by ½ inch to 1 inch during periods of hot, dry weather and leave grass clippings on the lawn as a source of free fertilizer. For more tips and information on Maryland’s Lawn Fertilizer Law, visit the department’s website or University of Maryland Extension.

Food Donation Tax Credit Pilot Program Now in Effect

Southern Maryland Farmers Elig ible for Up to $5,000 State Tax Credit

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 11, 2017) – Farmers in Southern Maryland are now eligible to participate in a food donation tax credit pilot program following today’s approval of emergency regulations by the Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review (AELR) Committee.

“This innovative program encourages farmers to donate fresh produce and more to non-profit organizations that support those in need,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “This is a way for Maryland farmers to further help their communities and ensure their harvest does not go to waste.”

Governor Larry Hogan signed into law the Farm Food Donation Pilot Program (SB 416) authorizing the Secretary of Agriculture, in conjunction with the Comptroller, to issue a State tax credit of up to $5,000 per calendar year to qualified farmers or farm businesses that make eligible food donations and certified organic produce donations to charitable organizations. The program is limited to Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties and only for tax years 2017, 2018 and 2019. The cumulative value of the donations shall not exceed $250,000 per fiscal year.

“Marylanders have a proud tradition of helping one another during tough times,” said Comptroller Peter Franchot. “This program will help encourage even more giving and I am confident it will be very successful and eventually expand statewide.”

Eligible food donations are eligible for a tax credit of up to 50 percent of the value of the donation, not to exceed $5,000 per calendar year. Certified produce donations are eligible for a tax credit of up to a value of 75 percent. The Secretary of Agriculture shall publish the values of the food donations and the certified organic produce weekly.

Farmers must submit a food donation form to a participating Tax Credit Administrator for the Maryland Food Donation Pilot Program.

Farmers and non-profit organizations interested in participating should contact the Maryland Department of Agriculture, Karen Kirksey at 410-841-5862 or [email protected] for more information.
