This touring model was near the top of the line in its day (the list price was $400 in the 1980 catalog). It could be a collector's item because of i_ts relative rarity (this one has the full chrome frame as opposed to the black or red painted models) and condition (excellent overall with original tires and handlebar tape!). I have a 25" model that I enjoy riding but this one is too nice for me to put into daily use. By the way, the "11.8" in the model name refers to the bike's weight in kilograms. I guess it sounded more exotic than plain old 26. $325

Schwinn Twinn. This is our old family tandem from the mid--60's. It is blue with chrome fenders and a two-speed rear axle. It is generally complete and in rideable condition but could benefit from some restoration. $175

Schwinn Bantam. One of our daughters started on this one in the early '80s. It

has the accessory bar for ''converting" it to a boy's model. It is in decent condition but needs a little cleaning up. $25

Please give me a call some weekday evening or weekend day if you are interested any of these items. John White 662-1734. You can also send email to me: [email protected]

. BICYCLE 'RAIL TRAILS' GE BOOST FROM STUDY

submitted by Paul Borjns ead

[Note: towns and trails referred to, and perso s quoted, are located in Massachusetts unless

otherwise stated]

round Massachusetts and other pa s of the country, plans to turn aban

doned railroad lines into walking and bicycling trails have often faced heated opposition from neighbors who fear the will be magnets for rapists, muggers and burglars.

But a newly released study by the National Park Service and a national "ra 1 trail" advocacy group that surveyed 7 ,0 0 miles of trails has found exactly the opposite is true: statistics show people a e considerable less likely to be victims of crime on a rail trail than elsewhere, and police officials praise the trails for reduc ng

• crime.

The Rails to Trails Conservancy study, based on 1996 crime records obtained from 372 trails in 38 states? accounting for nearly three-quarters of all US rail-trail mileage,

• .. " .. t... ~

tound none was the site ot a murder, on y one was the site of a rape, and 92°/o to 9 °/o of them reported not a single mugging r assault.

Data from the survey and FBI crim statistics indicate that the average perso using a suburban rail trail two hours a week is, over the course of a year, 121 times more likely to be mugged somepl ce other than the trail, and 348 times more likely to be assaulted elsewhere. The saf ty margin for urban and rural trails was o ly slightly lower, the study found.

Local rail-trail advocates hailed the survey, saying they hoped it would assu ge "not in my backyard" critics who have been blocking plans for rail trails in [ communities in Massachusetts].

"There's a perception that people h ve that's just not based in reality," said Sta e Representative John H. Stasik, a Framingham Democrat who bikes to t e State House several days a week in war weather and is a leading legislative advo ate for rail trails.

"When there1s more public access, 11 sorts of unsavory activity that would g on

doesn't occur," Stasik said. Fears that

burglars would use trails to "walk off with 94-inch TV sets" in suburbs defy common sense, he added.

Arlington planning director Alan McClennen, a driving force behind the Cambridge-Bedford Minuteman Trail, which draws up to 9,000 people a day, said, "We saw more vandalism and crime on the right of way of the Minuteman before it was built than we've ever seen on . . " 1t since.

Nationwide, more than 950 rail trails have been completed, with another 55 trails totaling 478 miles being planned .....

In December, Weston residents voted 698-410 against having the state pave and improve three miles of the old Boston and Maine line to Berlin that goes past the town dump and town center. The chairman of the selectmen ... said it was a "way of life issue for the town. West on has its own way of doing things."

[Countering] charges from many trail supporters, including Weston residents, that the vote smacked of elitism and exclusion, a typical view was that of resident John Callan, who said, "I can't see how it won1t bring in more people, more parking, more problems, more trash" and damage to town cons_ervation land. . .

However, 12 police officials, who provided lengthy accounts of the impacts of their communities' rail trails in the . report, all said the trails had either no impact or had enhanced safety.

Among them was South Burlington, Vermont, Police Chief Brian R. Searles, who said a rail trail is "likely to have a positive effect on the overall safety of the public. Crime and the fear of crime do not flourish in an atmosphere of high energy and healthy interaction among law abiding community members."

MYSTERIES OF THE UNKNOWN - REVEAILED!

The following has been dredged up from the twilight zone of Hidden Bike Club Lore and is here laid bare for all to see, so please pay heed, and clip and save for future

reference! This is the actLJal information you must have to get things on the Ride Calendar! This is how it happens!

Meetings' Secrets Uncovered! Hidden away amid the dusty tomes of the North Campus Space Research Building second floor Library, always on the first Thursday of the month, two months before the start of a ride calendar they are held:

First Thursday in February for the April-May Calendar First Thursday in April for the June-July Calendar First Thursday in June for the August-September Calendar First Thursday in August for the October-November and Winter Calendar

All Sunday Club Rides Are Set In Stone at these strange get togethers, fueled by spicy pizza and lubricated with an arcane collection of unusual but tasty fizzy liquids. Besides Sunday Ride Ideas, other info about weekly rides and invitationals can be delivered into the hands of the head of this cabal, the Ride Calendar Chair. And Ride Leader volunteers g~t first crack at the Calendar. Those who do not attend Must Submit their ride ideas or requests for specific ride dates Before the Meeting , or risk falling into The Great Void!

Survivors in the Aftermath: For two weeks following a meeting, these odd machinations are noted: Leaders for the many different excursions called ''Rides'' are Recruited by this cadre:

Sat. breakfast rides - Lu Chaney - volunteers call 663-4 726 Sun. A/8 rides - Jim Spencer - volunteers call 434-3097 Sun. C rides - Jack Caldwell - volunteers call 663-5060

The Ride Calendar Chair is also active, accepting calls from Weekly Ride Leaders, confirming, altering , or removing their rides, and missives from Invitational Leaders with details. After the third Thursday changes rapidly become as hard as riding a paceline in the dark.

Bermuda Triangle of Invitationals. Uncounted miles of lost rides can be avoided if you chart your course well ahead of time. Invitationals are ·rides held by bike clubs and other nonprofit organizations, sponsored on our calendar by club members. Our goal is to encourage more people to do more cycling in more places. If club members are not informed of these rides in time to make plans and enter before they fill or close, this goal is not met. That is why we have the Coming Up Column. As soon as you have decided to do the ride , please send: Ride Name, Date, Start Point, mileage options and a brief description to the Ride Calendar Chair, and we'll get it on ASAP. Don't assume someone else will put it on -call them and ask - or do it yourself. If it can't be published in time, you won't get mileage credit for it.

Hidden Newsletter: Corrections and updates in the newsletter are for emergencies. How many will remember to find and consult it when scrounging for the Ride Calendar? The editor has enough work without taking on part of the Ride Calendar Chair's job.

The Way Of Zen: We can't promise no more flats, but with more input from more club members Aware of these Laws of Time and Space, we can do a better job and it will help put us all on the path to True Enlightenment, at least as far as the Ride Calendar is concerned.
