We see and understand things not as they are but as we are

ini perlu gak?=>Discuss this claim in relation to at least two ways of knowing

The legend was told from a hundred years ago from our great-great grand

mothers that we dont leave alone in this world but alongside with otherworld

inhabitants. It was carried in our blood and without us noticing, it becomes a root of

conviction on unusual occasion that happen towards everyday life.

My topic will discuss To what extent do ethics and beliefs factor affect on

supernatural creature existence? It is about how different ethics and beliefs has made

one sense of perception different with others in terms of supernatural creature. It is

interesting for me because it makes me wonder whether we see and understand things

as we are or the way we understand things are always the same with others?

The word supernatural refers to some kind of spirits, but in English, it is a

manifestation or event attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the

laws of nature. While the word creature(huruf c kecil) refers to imaginary or

fantastical being. We have our minds and perspective to think, sense and judge

whether supernatural creature is real or just ancient believe.

Culturally, it is not possible to have a same perspective because its the

matter of difference in beliefs that causes of lack of unanimity of view. Each place

has their own reliance based on their tradition that has been made for a thousand years

    ago.

Take an example from West Java, Indonesia. There is a legend about a young

princess of Padjajaran name Dewi Katinda that expelled from the kingdom because

affected by some kind of black magic that make her body looks filthy and disgusting.

After she reached the southern shore she got a vision to jumped into the ocean so

Dewi jumped and turned into a beautiful lady but in supernatural form of life. Since

then, she ruled all creatures in southern coast of Java Island and known as Nyi (or

Nyai) Roro Kidul. There are local belief that wearing a green garment in her areas

will invite anger and the wearer will be swallowed by the waves that later will

become Nyais soldier. Many cases and people have died in that sea, the locals and

several people believe it was becauseNyi Roro Kidul. We as people in general that

lives in a modern and sophisticated world that is unattached and also disbelief with

the culture of Javanese, will contemplate this story as no less than coincidence, we

would think this accident was because of inadvertent moment at the beach or maybe

itssimply because the lack of carefulness.

However, wecould not say it is wrong and claim theres no such thing asNyi

Roro Kidul. Because seein terms of understanding something is a personal process

that is made from receiving information then manifest it using the way of knowing

and through the process, our own subjective is added onto it. In other word, sense

perception is what determines ways in understand a situation or circumstances.

Correspondingly, the way we feel and the way we think is another thing that will

affect on how deeply we bother to understand the issue and besides culture and

tradition, beliefs and faith is the main source of knowledge that would affect on how

    we seeand understand.

Raised in Muslim community makes me have my own judgment and

perception on everything that happened in my life as well as mystical stories or

legends on the region I lived in. I have understand things that are not logical to others,

and often I understand the same issue under a different light, while having Islamic as

my background. For example, the legend ofNyi Roro Kidulthat I was told before may

actually exist and some people may live under it but my faith doesnt allow me to

believe that kind of myth. I have my own belief that believing in myth makes me

included into among those who shirk (disbelieve) because it is a sort of act that

contradicting my God and His messenger.

For someone with different background, they might think it is not a problem to

believe in ancient tales and there is no big deal on it. This means, perception are back

again to one that interprets the situation according to his or her own perspective.

Religion is one area where ones perception makes it possible to be come aloof from

the logical definition of life. Thus there may be hundreds different perceptions in this

world and many different ways of understand thing it will not affect the principles of

my religion as well as my principles would not affect the perception of others.

Therefore, in my opinion, in terms of my question of To what extent do ethics

and beliefs factor affect on supernatural creature existence has made to the point

where our background determine one sense of perception on the existence of

supernatural creature. In conclusion, with open-mind and respect on others ways of

thinking, we will be able to see things like others but understand it as we are.
