released in 1954.

Created by the Halas & Batchelor Company.

Based on the 1945 novel by George Orwell.

JOHN HALAS (1912 - 1995)

• Born in Budapest, Hungary.

• Studied painting.• Opened his own

animation studio in 1932 in Hungary, but struggled for work.

• Born in Watford, England.

• An experienced animator/illustrator, she began working with Halas in 1938 in Hungary.

• She and Halas later married.

• Based on the novel by the British writer George Orwell (1903-1950).

• An allegory of the Russian Revolution told with animals published in 1945. It is strong critic of totalitarianism.

• Released at a time of anxiety about the rise of Communism after the Second World War.

• Released theatrically in 1954. • Halas & Batchelor became the

largest studio in Europe.• At the height of production 80

people worked on the film.

The C.I.A provided $300,000 out of a cost of over $500,000 towards the budget of the film.
