Animal Extinction By Lucia Breuer

Overpopulation has been a problem humans have faced for years. However, there are animals in the world that are facing the opposite problem, extinction. Extinction is the process of everyone in a large group, such as species or family, dying out. Many animal species are facing this issue because of the way we treat the world.

One of the most endangered animals in the world is the amur leopard. Like other felines, the amur leopard is a solitary animal, so it’s hard to find a mate. Add on the poaching and illegal hunting, it’s no wonder there are only about 70 amur leopards left. They are the most endangered cat in world. There are very few amur leopards living in the wild because of habitat loss. Luckily, in only seven years the amount of amur leopards has almost doubled, and they’re hopefully on their way to getting off of the critically endangered list.

Another nocturnal animal that has been struggling is the black-footed ferret. Not long ago, they were globally extinct (only living in zoos), but now they have made a remarkable recovery using agencies, zoos, and Native American tribes. They managed to get the population of the black-footed ferret up to 300, which still leaves them on the endangered list, but the black-footed ferret is working up it’s population.

The black-footed ferret and the amur leopard are two animals on a long list of endangered animals. Species everywhere are facing habitat loss, illegal hunting, and poaching. Joe Pavelski

By Carson Phillips Joe Pavelski is a professional ice-hockey player from Plover, Wisconsin. As a kid, he played for the Stevens

Point Ice Hawks, a team I have played against before. After Pavelski’s youth hockey years, he played for the Stevens Point Panthers, a high school hockey team. With the Panthers, he won a state championship. Also, he won the Clark Cup with the Waterloo Black Hawks in 2004. He was even awarded the Dave Tyler Junior Player of the Year Award. Pavelski played college hockey with Wisconsin, and helped Wisconsin win the 2006 NCAA Division Men’s Championship and recorded 101 points during the season. In the 2006-2007 season, he was drafted to the San Jose Sharks of the NHL. He scored in his first NHL game. In the 2014-2015 season Pavelski became an alternate captain. And, on October 5th, he was named the captain of the San Jose Sharks.

Eric Thames Keeps Getting Tested for Drug Use By Isaiah Terrell

Did you know that Eric Thames has been drug tested multiple times? Eric Thames is an outfielder for the Milwaukee Brewers. He has 13 home runs this season. He has been drug tested so many times because of the amount of home runs he has hit so far this year. He played baseball in Korea the last three years. He came over to America to play in the MLB this season because the Milwaukee Brewers signed him to a long term contract. This is his first year playing for the Brewers. They are continuously drug testing him because they don’t believe that he has that much power. He keeps hitting home runs, so they keep testing him, although, they haven’t found proof of any performance enhancing drugs. He has said many time that he will keep taking the drug tests without a fight because he’s not taking anything illegal. Thames currently is near the lead in the National League in home runs. The way he is playing he is looking to stay near the league leaders. He is not only hitting several home runs, but he is also leading the Milwaukee Brewers to victory. 2017 NFL Draft: Packers Picks By Josh Weber and Ashton Beers

Kevin King, the 33rd overall pick selected by the Green Bay Packers The 2017 NFL Draft Class was a talented group as many

franchises looked to improve their teams. The Green Bay Packers had a pretty successful draft. The Packers decided to trade out of the first round. The Packers received a second round and extra fourth round pick for their trade. With the 33rd overall pick, the Packers first pick, they selected Kevin King, a cornerback from Washington. The Packers struggled in pass defense last year, being one of the worst, and it was no surprise that they picked a solid cornerback first. The Packers also drafted Josh Jones, a safety from NC State, in the second round to add more depth to their pass defense.

The Packers drafted Montravius Adams, a defensive tackle, in the third round. In the fourth round, the Packers selected a linebacker from Wisconsin, Vince Biegel. Then Packers turned their attention to offensive players. They picked up a running back, Jamaal Williams, from BYU. Williams started eight of 13 games as a true freshman in 2012, carrying 166 times for 775 yards and catching 27 passes. For the fifth round the Packers drafted Deangelo Yancey, Deangelo is a WR from Purdue who finished college with total of 141 receptions for 2,344 and 20 TDs. The Packers 6th round pick was Aaron Jones, RB from UTEP who dominated college with 58 carries for 4,114 yards and 33 TDs to go with 71 receptions for 646 yards. In our final three picks the Packers selected Kofi Amichia, an offensive lineman from South Florida. The Packers selected a third running back, Devante Mays, out of Utah State. The Packers last draft pick was Malachi Dupre, a wide receiver from LSU. He finished his college experience with Finished with 98 receptions for 1,609 and 14 TDs. Fans hope that all these new draft picks will help the team.

Nick Saban Football Coach Gets Salary Raise By Mauricio Gundrum

Head coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide University Football team, Nick Saban gets a large pay raise. Nick Saban has been a coach there for nine years and lead his team to four SEC championships and four National Championships. He is also at the age of 65, and only wants to coach the Alabama team. To ensure that he doesn’t leave, Alabama raised his salary. He’s coached other teams in the past such as the college team, Michigan State, and the NFL team, the Miami Dolphins. Saban will receive 11.25 million dollars this season. He also signed a three year contract extension that gives him a bonus of 4 million dollars. All in all the contract for the 8 years will give him 65 million dollars. He also has the possibility to gain 700,000 dollars more each year. The 11.25 million will be the most amount of money a sports college coach has ever made. He is also one of the nation's highest paid public employees. Also, if Saban is fired before his contract ends, he will still get paid his salary, and an extra fee which would total around 26.9 million dollars.

James Conner By Will Summers and Gage Ziegler

James Conner is an ex-Pittsburgh Panthers Running Back got was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft. James Conner has the most heart of any football player that was drafted this year. The reason being why he has the most heart is because he went through six months of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma treatment. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a form of cancer. He was diagnosed with this in the fall of 2015 while recovering from his MCL tear in his knee. Through 12 rounds of chemotherapy he still worked on getting the NFL’s attention. After three and a half seasons of college football, he racked up around 4200 rushing yards and 56 touchdowns!

He also was a multi-positional playing on both offense and defense. James went to the NFL 2017 combine cancer free. At the NFL draft, he was then picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 105 draft pick overall. He was chosen in the third round. The Steelers are hoping he can be a great running back for them.

Trap Shooting - The Team and How it Works By Vincent Hansen

This year, many SMS students and myself competed for our school on the trap shooting team. The season lasts from Mid-February and can continue up into August if you choose. Trap shooting is a sport of agility and hand-eye coordination. There are five people on the line at a time, one at each station. See the diagram below to see where people take their shooting positions.

You take one shot at a time with everyone shooting one shell systematically from station 1-2-3-4-5 until you take you next shot. After this has happened five times, you change stations from left to right, station 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5, then back to 1. After you have shot five shells at each station, the round is over, so you end up taking 25 total shots. When the shooter on the line yells, “Pull!” a 4.5 inch disc flies out of the trap house at about 42 mph travelling in a random direction; left, right, or straight. This year the JV team went 4-3. Ex-NASCAR Driver Battles Cancer By Anna Gregory

John Andretti, former NASCAR driver, is

battling stage 4A of cancer. He was 54 years old when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. The disease was discovered when Andretti went to the hospital for a check up. The doctors found out was that he had stage 3A of cancer. His family was worried that he had cancer, but the doctors think they got all of it our by removing 12-14 inches of his colon. Unfortunately, when he went back for another check up, he said he had pain on his back and they went check and find out he had stage 4A of cancer.

John Andretti said, “We’re in it to win it, but, this one race I can’t lose.” John Andretti is racing for the finish line, and this race he must get first place.

Bucks Playoff Run By Grant Race

The Bucks ended their season with an awesome record, 42-40, considering their record last season was 33-49.

They made it to the playoffs as the six seed against the Toronto Raptors who were the third seed in the Eastern Conference NBA Playoffs. Giannis Antetokounmpo lead the team to their 42-40 record with a total amount of 24.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2.2 steals per game. In the first game, the Bucks were the away team, and they were able to get the win 97-83. This was quite surprising as the Bucks weren’t favored to win this series. Then, as the series went on, it went back and forth. The Raptors won game two by six points. The Bucks won game three by 27 points. The Raptors won by 11 in game four. The series was tied 2-2 and it was looking like any team could take it. This is when it turned for the worse for Bucks fans. When the next game came, the Raptors blew out the Bucks. As the possibly final game approach the Raptors were looking favorable. They were up by 13 at half and it was looking like the end for the Bucks. Then they came back and outscored the Raptors by ten in the second half but that wasn’t enough for the Bucks to continue their season. They ended up losing the playoff series. The young players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Malcolm Brogdon, Tony Snell, and Greg Monroe, did gather some valuable playoff experience. Fun Places to go on Vacation By Ashlyn Janzer

If you are planning to go on vacation, read on!

There are a few fun family-friendly places. From past experience, Walt Disney World in Florida is a fun place! My family and I travel to Walt Disney World at least once a year. There are lots of foods, and in Epcot World Showcase, there are foods from different countries. With roller coasters, boat rides, and all different sorts of attractions you can go to. Don’t forget, at every one of the four parks, there are firework shows. Don’t want to go to the attractions? At the Magic Kingdom, you can hang around the shops on Main St. USA. Or, you can go to Downtown Disney, or the newly named Disney Springs and shop, eat, and walk around Walt Disney's Epcot to see the sights.

Are you a person who loves water parks? If you do, Blue Harbor is the place for you. You don’t even have to travel out of Wisconsin to stay in this huge hotel, with a massive waterpark inside. You can walk around in shorts and a t-shirt inside, and it won’t matter if it is snowing outside. The water park has two huge tubing slides that start inside, then go outside of the building for a few seconds then it comes back in. You can still relax here in the lazy river where you float around in a big tube. If you like whales, or other sea creatures,

If you're looking for a place to visit in Wisconsin, Copper Falls is a majestic site we highly recommend. If you want to get out or go for a hike, Copper Falls is a beautiful destination for you to unwind. There are beautiful sightseeing opportunities, camping spots, and swimming at the Copper Falls State Park. There are amazing waterfalls hidden amongst a variety of trees with various sizes. The character of the falls almost tells a story as the eroded rocks jut out of the flowing water perfectly. The rocks with falling water is like a puzzle. Each piece imperfect but together complete. The tall green trees conceal the beauty within.  

Copper Falls is located Mellen, WI, which is in the Northern area of Wisconsin. According to Google Maps, the drive from Slinger to Copper Falls is about 300 miles away which would take about five hours of driving. The town of Copper Falls has amazing cabins from the 1930’s which adds an extra spark of attraction. We strongly suggest you get out and enjoy the wild with the falls.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Smartphone

The newest Smartphone by Samsung is the Samsung Galaxy S8. This smartphone is equipped with iris scanners which is a scanner that looks into your eye, and it has a fingerprint scanner for security. You can use these instead of typing passwords in. It can be very convenient when you are in a rush and want to check something quickly. Also, you won’t have the problem of opening your phone when your hands are wet because you would have the iris scanner.

This smartphone doesn’t have a home button. There is a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone near the camera but no actual home button.

This phone’s screen is called an infinity screen. The infinity screen allows for a lot of screen in a little bit of space. The display is 5.8 inches but it feels like a normal phone.

The camera has dual-pixel camera that can take pictures quickly and clearly. Samsung made the camera so you could use it in the day or night and still get a clear photo.

It isn’t cheap though. If you were to buy this phone without a monthly plan, it would cost $765. Most buyers add a monthly fee into their cell phone data plan.

 This year, Dodge released a new and exclusive track ready performance car. They call it the Dodge Demon,

and it suits the name quite well with a 6.2-liter supercharged Hemi V-8 engine. This vehicle has 840 horsepower and

770 foot-pound of torque. With this type of power, the demon can go 0 to 60 mile per hour in 2.3 seconds, and to 100 mile per hour only in 5.1 seconds. This car has so much power that you will be able to pull a front wheelie off the line. With this much power you think this car will be worth insane money, but Dodge claim this car will be less than $100,000. This new demon will be a street legal. With customization, the car can be a comfortable everyday car, or the fast track ready Demon to the lucky 3000 people who can get one.

Nissan R34 Luke Weber

In the year of 1999, the dealership Nissan dropped the 5th generation of R34 Skyline GT-R’s. The 5th version of the skyline has a 2.6 liter twin turbo engine from the previous Skyline’s. The R34 Skyline has an improved chassis with 50% more stability than the R33 model. The engine itself has lots more improvements including the camshafts and the ceramic turbocharger. This will give the car around 320 horsepower. The top speed of this car is apx. 155mph or 249 km/m.

This car is actually illegal due to how crazy fast and loud the car is. Cops couldn't keep up with the Skyline because cop cars are rear wheel drive whereas the R34 is all wheel drive. This is a huge dream car of mine and I wish these cars weren't illegal in the United States.

Bull is an amazing TV show on CBS that you all should watch. Dr. Jason Bull is the main character, and the show combines psychology, human intuition, mock trials and high tech data to know what the jurors are going to do, and how they will react to the witness, specialist, and victims. The mock trials are where they bring in people exactly like the jurors and test their reactions to how the lawyers argue the case.

The “drama inspired by the early career of Dr. Phil McGraw, the founder of one of the most prolific trial consulting firms of all time,” says CBS. This show is currently in its first season. It is not on Netflix or any streaming service yet. You can watch it on demand through the CBS channel. I highly recommend it! Bull link

Have you heard the new craze? Well if you didn’t, then you’re missing out on one of the most basic things flying around social media. Recently, the Unicorn frappe came out, which made Instagram’s feed blow up. The drink’s most distinguishing characteristic is its majestic colors. YouTube and blog reviews say that the drink is horrible, bitter, but its enjoyable for toddlers. We agree with the reviews and found it to be disgusting. It did look pretty, though. This trendsetting drink isn’t the only special drink out there now.

A Starbucks barista invented the Dragon Frappe after running out of ingredients for the Unicorn Frappe. Well this drink isn’t specifically invented by Starbucks, it is a secret menu item. If you were to ask one of the baristas for a Troll frappe, they wouldn't know what you’re talking about. Instead look up the ingredients for the drink and tell them that instead. Exp: ask for a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino with three scoops of blackberry inclusions (for a grande). Then, ask for a drizzle made with eight pumps of white mocha, three pumps of toasted coconut, and three scoops of matcha powder. And that is how you would get a Dragon Frappe from the not-so-basic coffee shop. We haven’t tried this “special” drink yet, but are eager to try it.

How to Make Fluffy Slime By Carly Griesemer & Maggie Plahmer

Have you seen the new trend going around Instagram and YouTube? It is a new substance taking over homes everywhere...slime. There are many Instagram and YouTube accounts that are kids and adults who are dedicated to making slime and showing other people how to make slime. The slime craze is not like the regular jiggly and watery slime you buy from the dollar section in target, instead it is stretchy, stiffer, squishy, and makes noises that are very “satisfying” when you play with it. One of the most popular is fluffy slime, because you can make quite a bit with small quantities of ingredients, so we are going to show you how to make it.

Fluffy Slime What you need:

● PVA Glue ● Shaving Cream ● Borax / Saline Solution + Baking Soda ● Foaming Hand Soap ● Food Coloring (optional)

Directions:

1. Start by making your borax solution; 1 tsp. of borax in 1 cup of warm water. (You can skip this step if you are using contact solution.)

2. Pour ½ cup of PVA glue into your bowl. 3. Put ¼ cup of shaving cream into your bowl with the glue. 4. Put ¼ cup of foaming hand soap in your glue/shaving cream mixture. 5. If you are using contact solution add ¼ tsp. of baking soda. 6. You can add in your food coloring now. 7. MIX! 8. Add your borax solution OR saline solution SLOWLY
