New SOPs & Policies

POL.AWEL.23 – Food and Water Provision for Research Animals“…all personnel working with research animals must assure that animals have access to food and water at all times, except as allowed by IACUC-approved exceptions or specific Division of Animal Care (DAC) policies. Failure by research personnel to assure access to food and/or water to animals will be subject to IACUC oversight and may result in measures up-to and including suspension of research activities.”

New SOPs & PoliciesPOL.AWEL.23 – Food and Water Provision for Research Animals

Why is this a problem?

Cage left on cart overnight without access to water

Reviewed SOPs & PoliciesTriennial Reviews

• POL.ADM.02 – Final Disposition of Animals Used in Research• POL.AWEL.02 – Expired Medical Materials in Research• POL.AWEL.04 – Hand Catching of Awake NHPs• POL.AWEL.07 – Food Fluid Regulation

ARIES TIP: Triennial De novo Review- Federal regulations state that protocols can be approved for a max. of 3 years, after which point a new

protocol must be submitted for a full review

- There is no mechanism for “renewal,” only “de novo” review

- The new protocol is reviewed as if it was a new submission- Previously approved procedures may generate questions as guidance changes, further clarification is

needed, there are changes/updates in ARIES (e.g. formulary updates), or issues from the original review are identified for refinement

- The ARIES copy/clone function is intended to allow PIs to keep or generate new numbers, and to ease burden by not requiring a full re-write. Do not clone/copy and resubmit without a full revision, this will result a greatly extended review process

- Additional advice:- Update numbers to reflect completed work/aims- Contact OAWA with any questions prior to submission, we are happy to consult with authors

Incoming & Outgoing Shipping IssuesShipments to and from non-commercial vendors are experiencing delays due to available transport. Multiple issues are contributing to the issue.

One commercial airline available for domestic shipments

Shortage of staff at both airlines and airline hubs (COVID-19 related)

Reduced flights (COVID-19 related)

Extreme temperatures

Ground transport is a viable option for urgent shipments, cost dependent on mileage and crate count.

During this time, we appreciate patience and ensure all shipments will be completed as quickly and safely as possible.

Veterinary/Clinical Updates

Reminder: Contact DAC Veterinarians if you experience any unanticipated adverse consequences resulting in animal welfare concerns or death. This is especially important when working with USDA species.

Timely Reporting Animal Health Issues is an Animal Welfare Issue

New Drug – Ethiqa XR Extended-Release Buprenorphine (Mice)

• Ethiqa XR now available – FDA Indexed extended-release buprenorphine

– Administered q 48 hours

– Available from Covetrus, Midwest Veterinary Supply, and MWI

– Similar to BupSR, but does not require veterinarian prescription

– DEA Registration & TN Board of Pharmacy License required for purchase

– Must be stored in a lock box in accordance with Vanderbilt and DEA requirements

Buprenorphine HCl—Dosing Change◦Buprenorphine HCl◦ Literature indicates that duration of action not as long in mice as previously

indicated◦ Appropriate frequency of administration is q 4-6 hours (4x

administration/day)

Impact on IACUC ProtocolsARIES Formulary has been updated

◦ New mouse protocols using buprenorphine will be required to select either Ethiqa XR (q 48 hr), Bup SR (q 48 hr), or Bup HCl at the new q 4-6 hour frequency of administration

◦ Amendments to mouse protocols with buprenorphine will require the same update

◦ All mouse protocols using Bup HCl must be updated by September 1, 2022

Administration & Ordering information posted on the ACUP website
