He was the chairman of the AtomicEnergy Commission of India and the Secretary to theGovernment of India, he was the Director of the BhabhaAtomic Research Centre, Trombay from 1996-2000. Hewas awarded the Padma Vibhushan, Indias second high-est civilian honour, on January 26, 2009.Apart from playing a major role in Indias nuclear testsasserting sovereignty, Kakodkar champions Indias self-reliance on thorium as a fuel for nuclear energy.

1 Early lifeKakodkar was born in 1943 (November 11, 1943), inBarwani princely state (present day Madhya Pradeshstate) to Kamala Kakodkar and Purushottam Kakodkar, both Gandhian freedom ghters. He had his early educa-tion at Barwani and at Khargone, until moving toMumbaifor post-matriculation studies.Kakodkar graduated from Ruparel College, then fromVJTI, University of Mumbai with a degree in MechanicalEngineering in 1963. He joined the Bhabha Atomic Re-search Centre (BARC) in 1964. He obtained a mastersdegree in experimental stress analysis from the Universityof Nottingham in 1969.

2 CareerHe joined the Reactor Engineering Division of theBARC and played a key role in design and constructionof the Dhruva reactor, a completely original but high-techproject. He was a part of the core team of architects of In-dias Peaceful Nuclear Tests in 1974 and 1998. Furtherhe has led the indigenous development in Indias Pres-surised Heavy Water Reactor Technology. His work inthe rehabilitation of the two reactors at Kalpakkam andthe rst unit at Rawatbhata, which at one stage were onthe verge of being written o, are examples of his engi-neering capability. In 1996 he became Director of the BARC and since 2000he is leading the Atomic Energy Commission of India andalso is the secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy. He has published over 250 scientic papers. He believes that India should be self-reliant in energy, es-

pecially by use of the cheap national thorium resources.Today, he continues to engage in designing the AdvancedHeavy Water Reactor, that uses thorium-uranium 233 asthe primary energy source with plutonium as the driverfuel. The unique reactor system, with simplied but safetechnology, will generate 75 per cent of electricity fromthorium.
