Anika Nilles part 2 - Lesson Notes Carrying on from last week… Fill at 1:30 I liked the triplet feel to this and the way the kick was doubling some notes on the toms. Begin by playing the kick and snare accents. That’s what the audience will primarily hear. Then add in the ghost notes and tom hits. Fill at 1:37 This fill has a bit of a Steve Gadd/David Garibaldi feel to it with the overlapping 16ths. Begin by playing just the kick and right hand hi-hat parts plus the back beat on the snare. Get that sound in your head then add the ghost notes on the ‘e+’ of beat 2 and you’re done. Fill at 1:43 This fill sounds more complicated than it is. The sticking is just R L F L repeated. The Right hand plays the 1/4 notes, the kick plays the off beat 8ths and the left hand fills in the ‘e’s and ‘a’s. What makes it sound interesting is the placement of the left hand accents. Note that they’re essentially coming on every 3rd left hand note.

Big fill at 1:44!!This is a 4 bar fill. It sounds quite random. It’s a lot to remember. I go through the problems with it in the video lesson. It’s really a case of finding ways to remember the rhythm and melody of the fill along with which hands play what, etc. It’s fun to learn and you’re putting yourself in Anika’s shoes if you set yourself the challenge. You might also want to play along and make up your own fill using ideas that we’ve accumulated so far.!

!!Next week we’ll look at the rest of the song including the long solo bit. I’ll include the full transcription as another bonus download so you can have a go on your own.!!Note that you can buy a minus-drums version of this song (Alter Ego) on iTunes.!!Enjoy…
