Pupil Free Day Tomorrow – Friday 17th August There will be no regular classes for students on this day which is the third of four pupil free days for 2018 at Mano. Staff will be engaged in a range of activities tomorrow including a session supporting health and well-being followed by Numeracy Professional Development sessions focusing upon the use of Mathletics and Essential Assessment. Classes will resume Monday 20th August as usual.

The Concert Preparations Really Are in Full Swing! Ms Cowdell is doing a wonderful job bringing the whole student cohort together for this biennial major event. Via weekly Music specialist classes, students are preparing for their class group acts – learning their Disney songs and dance moves. Tickets will be available online early next month – more details are included in this newsletter. Information relating to suggested students costumes is now being circulated and the new venue for us of Costa Hall, Deakin University should make for a special and memorable evening. Keep the date free – TUESDAY 16th OCTOBER.

Book Fair is Coming Back to Mano In the week starting Monday 27th August the Book Fair will be back at Mano, located in the Library and open for business each afternoon after school. Please consider popping in to see some great books and amazing stationary items for sale. The school receives a commission from all sales, which will support library resourcing projects. Thank you to Mrs Bencic who is coordinating this Book Fair visit.

Father’s Day is Coming Soon – Sunday 2nd September On the first Sunday of September (the first Sunday of Spring) we celebrate Father’s Day and our students are able to shop for this at school on the two school days prior. On Thursday 30th August and Friday 31st August a Father’s Day stall will offer a range of gifts all for $5 each. Some students might be shopping for step-fathers, grandfathers or other special males in their lives. I wish all ‘Mano Fathers’ a special day on Sunday 2nd September!

Mindfulness at Mano Most classes each day practice up to two mindfulness activities. These will vary from day to day and across grade levels. This is a key component of our whole of school positive mental health approaches. Ask your children about this! It could be some quiet colouring in, some deep breathing exercises, some activities to imagine you are in a special location (eg: walking along a beach), a short physical activity or perhaps a meditation session. Mindfulness is about focusing on the present. Mindfulness can help you feel better and reduce stress. Researchers are also studying

mindfulness and related techniques such as relaxation to see if they can help treat various physical and mental health conditions.

Mindfulness is paying full attention to what is going on in you and outside you, moment by moment, and without judging. It means you observe your thoughts, feelings, and the sensations of taste, touch, smell, sight and sound. You are also fully aware of your surroundings. Some Mindfulness Apps for you to consider (teachers at Mano are using some of these) – The Mindfulness App, Headspace, Calm, MINDBODY, Buddhify, Insight Timer, Smiling Mind, Meditation Timer Pro.

We Want Our Parents To Tell Us What They Think! Government schools are conducting a survey to find out what parents think of their school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training. Randomly selected parents have been invited to participate in this year’s survey via email on Monday 23rd July. All responses to the survey are anonymous. Currently less than 50% of selected parents have completed the survey. We need your feedback before the survey closes on Sunday 26th August. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the time period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. Your feedback is valuable to us. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. We use these results to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the school community in a variety of areas. Please keep an eye on your inbox for an email from the school inviting you to participate. The Office has been sending reminders to those parents randomly selected to participate in this year’s survey.

Mrs Mundine Will Be Acting Principal for the Second Half of Term 3 I will be taking some Long Service Leave commencing next week and Mrs Mundine will step up to be the Acting Principal during this period. I’m sure our school community will be in good hands and she will receive the same level of support which I appreciate on a daily basis form our community in my role.

Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents were invited to participate in this year’s survey. Selected parents were contacted via email on Monday 23rd July with instructions on how to complete the survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 23rd July to Sunday 26th August. Manifold Heights PS Week beginning 13th August 2018

Coordinator: Georgie Petrovski

Hi Everyone,

This week in OSHC we have had a big focus on group games. We have been very busy learning new games that the team

leaders and the children suggest! Fast paced card games have been a favourite. We have played lots of Charades, balloon

challenges, cards, chess, Uno, math challenges, musical chairs, wink murder, pick a pair and Four Corners. We are getting

the children to learn through games and fun. There have been outdoor games every day and there will be much more to

come once the weather warms up.

We have started some art and craft cotton bags that the children design and create. OSHC is focusing on group games this

term. We are trying to get all children involved and talking to each other. This will encourage them to talk to peers they

normally wouldn’t and work as a team forming new relationships.

If you looking for registration, just log onto www.campaustralia.com.au Just reminding parents if your child is not attending the OSHC program on any day they are booked, you must let us know

via phone as we are to follow correct procedures in locating children who have not shown up. So please ensure you send us

a text or call via phone on the Manifold Heights OSHC mobile phone service number which is 0405 422 142.

Thank you to all families. Georgie and Maddie
