Revolution • 1950s-1961 - Nationalist movements develop and war begins.• 1956 -The early beginnings of the socialist guerrilla independence

movement, the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), based in northern Congo.

• 1961 - Forced labor was abolished after Angolan people revolt in coffee plantations leaving 50,000 dead. The fight for independence.

• 1974 - Revolution in Portugal begins and the colonial empire falls.• 1975 - Angola gains independence from Portugal.

• It was striving to tackle the physical, social and political legacy of the 27-year civil war that  the country after independence.

• The ruling Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and the rebel group Unita were bitter rivals even before the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975.

• The Soviet Union and Cuba supported MPLA, while the US and white-ruled South Africa supported Unita against Soviet influence in Africa.

• The southern African state of Angola has gained its independence becoming free state with no government, ad open for new powers and ideas.

• The leader Dr. Agostinho Neto of the popular movement for the Liberation of Angola MPLA was anounced the country's first president

• Meanwhile, the rival Union for the Total Independence of Angola Unita announced it had joined forces with another liberation movement to form a national council which would act as Angola's government.

                     After Effects

The Cold War flare-up in Angola in 1975-1976 dramatically changed the course of U.S. diplomacy that had been established in the early parts of the decade.U.S. and Soviet interests in national internal wars that could help them and where “peaceful coexistence” they had hoped to maintain.
