NOTICES

From the new Locum - The Rev’d Roger Williams For the next few months I look forward to working with you and coming to know you. Being a fill in Priest and not knowing your ways and wants I am sure you will put me on the straight and narrow letting me know your ways and wants!

Having had a Bishop in your presence in recent months and now having just a lowly Priest you have certainly drawn the short straw. No matter who follows and hopefully it will be soon as your permanent Vicar he or she can only be a rung up the ladder.

A brief background - Born and bred in Perth Western Australia, studied in Perth and England, worked in the Parishes of Mt Lawley and Kalgoorlie in the Diocese of Perth, came to Victoria to go into Chaplaincy work at Melbourne Grammar School and up to very recently at Mentone Grammar School. Married to Enid with 3 now adult boys.

Looking forward to meeting you.

NextGen Organ Concert Notice of a forthcoming NextGen organ concert has been included in recent pew bulletins. This event introduces younger and newly-trained organists who each contribute 3-5 minutes to the program, depending of their stage of development. Organised by the Australian and New Zealand Guild of Organists [ANZCO], this initiative is now in its third year and has expanded to two concerts per year, with an increasing number of young participants. There is an admission as we divide the proceeds, giving each performer a share of the door takings: probably a first for student recitals! No money is made by ANZCO and we’re most grateful to St John’s and Dr Billings for willingly allowing us the use of the building and instrument on May 16th. Together with St Paul’s Cathedral, who co-sponsor the other concert in August, the parish’s assistance in helping ANZCO to encourage young musicians has already borne fruit in the placement of organists in local positions.

Prayer for Mother’s Day

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her

children, so you watch over your Church.

Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian

mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.

Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honour them always

with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

PARISH MAINTENANCE MAY 2015 Parishioners will see a fair bit of general maintenance over the next few weeks hence we want to keep you informed as follows: Hall Repairs Works commenced Saturday 2 May, involving scaffolding at the front of the hall. As there will be no vehicle access to Toorak Rd whilst in progress, it would be inadvisable to bring your car into the driveway. We are told repairs should take around 2/3 weeks. Tree pruning Following the fall of a large tree in front of the hall an Arborist was commissioned to report on the health of our trees. The good news “The tree scape is generally of good health and condition and offers all who frequent the site great amenity.” The bad news - each remaining tree has some problem requiring attention. These include heavy possum foraging, insufficient water, lack of pruning, over hanging and insufficient soil treatment. Possums will always be a problem so we feel that not only do we need to reinvigorate our trees but also place possum guards on them. Correction will be costly nevertheless we will commence a progressive programme following hall repairs as the budget permits. Initial action will commence 8th May. Fertilising and stem injection will start 8 May, tree pruning 25/26 May. Vicarage refit Inspection revealed that the house needed repainting inside and out, carpets, blinds and curtains replaced and at least one bathroom updated. As there were also a number of minor repairs to be attended to the Parish Council decided it would be best to do a complete refit. This should commence early May. Fortunately we can manage this very costly exercise within existing finances.

Memorial Garden The grass planted there a few years ago has not prospered despite the per-sistent efforts of Trevor. This detracts from what is otherwise a serene and beautiful area. Our patience is over, restoration is required and a solution will be forthcoming within the next few months. All Saints Church Unfortunately the base of the eastern wall of the church has a rising damp problem probably existing for years. Due to poor plumbing, the water from one of the downpipes has had nowhere to go but to run alongside the church and has seeped into the brickwork. Correction including redirec-tion of the downpipe and clean out of the storm water drain has com-menced. Kindergarten Works planned include reducing the size of the shed and removing the brick wall. This will permit them to improve the “derelict” piece of land at the back of the kindergarten along the lines of establishing a flower/vegetable garden. Pipe Organ Areas that require attention include- Swell shutters, Pedal and keyboard bushings, Choir keys, Stop action buttons and Choir Lieblich Flute. This major overhall will occur during June Wardens.
