Elizabeth Collins Lyric Cook
On July 13, 2012, Elizabeth and Lyric were taken from our community. Their bikes were discovered at Meyers Lake, in Evansdale, Iowa. Thousands showed up to aid in the search. The community and police and fire rescue teams from several areas searched for weeks.
On December 5, nearly five months since the girls went missing, hunters discovered two bodies 19 miles away at an old county park. It was devastating news. The whole state mourned. Several days later, the autopsy results confirmed the worst. We all hoped and prayed they would come home—it just wasn’t the “home” we all wished for. Elizabeth and Lyric are now home with the angels.
Angels Memorial FundThe Angels Memorial Fund, a special project fund, has been established with the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa to collect donations for the Angels Memorial project at Meyers Lake in Evansdale, Iowa, which will remember the lives of Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook.
The Evansdale Park and Recreation Board has approved plans to construct a walkway linking the island in Meyers Lake to Angels Park, located on the North side of the lake. The Angels Memorial will be located on the island where a gazebo or park shelter will be constructed, along with landscaping and some concrete work to enhance the area. Preliminary estimates for the project have been over $100,000.
Additionally, if more funds are raised than necessary to complete the project, it has been discussed that a permanent endowment fund could be set up with the Community Foundation to provide grants for future upkeep and maintenance of the Angels Memorial.
“Our hope is to construct a place of peace and serenity in the girls’ honor as well as the loved
ones of anyone who chooses to plant a rose bush, park bench, or purchase a brick in their
loved one’s memory.”~ Christie Tipton, project volunteer
A walkway will be built from Angels Park to the island in Meyers Lake where the public will be able to enjoy a place to reflect and remember those they have lost.
Donations to the fund can be made online at www.cfneia.org or by filling out the tear-off on the reverse side. All donations are tax-deductible.
