Letter to donors

Dear Friends of Angel Charity for Children, Inc.,

We are pleased to share that over the past 33 years, through the generosity of our individual donors, foundations and corporate partners we have positively impacted the lives of over one million children in our community through the donation of over 24 million dollars. Thanks to the support of our loyal donors and dedicated volunteers, we are beginning another year of improving the lives of children in Pima County! This year Angel Charity will partner with four non-profit organizations and fund $817,854 to accomplish the following:

Imago Dei Middle School – Funding in the amount of $600,000 will allow this organization to exercise an expiring option and provide the down payment toward the purchase of their existing 25,258 square foot school building directly across from the Ronstadt Transit Center. This multicultural middle school (eight languages are spoken) provides a tuition-free education to children in grades 5-8 from low-income Tucson families. Children often begin at grade 5 at far below grade level but with the 10:1 student teacher ratio, two meals a day to feed their bodies and ten hours a day of teaching and enrichment activities to feed their minds, these students are able to successfully move on to high school and college and break the cycle of poverty for not only themselves, but for their families as well.

Educational Enrichment Foundation – A gift in the amount of $148,150 will be used as two-year funding for Interscholastic Scholarships for TUSD Middle and High School students in poverty who otherwise would not be able to participate in extracurricular activities. These activities include school sports teams and fine arts activities like band, orchestra, dance, choir and academic competitive teams including Mock Trial and Future Business Leaders of America.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic School – The School will be funded $49,704 to purchase one (1) desktop computer and five (5) Chromebooks for the 15 home rooms. The school (PreK-8th grade) is located in the south side of Tucson and currently serves 370 children from low-income families.

Nourish - Funding $20,000 to help children with feeding challenges receive direct nutrition and feeding therapy in the early critical stages of growth and development to enable them to eat, grow, thrive and avoid long term delays.

The needs of children in our community are greater than ever. We ask that you join us in helping these well-deserving organizations by contributing to our campaign. Thank you for your consideration of Angel Charity and this year’s beneficiaries. Together we can make a difference in children’s lives to positively impact our entire community.

Who we are

Why donate?

Angel Charity for Children, Inc. is a non-profit organization comprised of 150 devoted members representing a cross-section of the Tucson community. Through innovative fundraising, these dedicated and effective Angels are committed to providing Pima County’s children with the vibrant future they so richly deserve.

Founded in 1983 by Tucsonan Louise Thomas, Angel Charity for Children, Inc. retired the mortgage and expanded and remodeled the Ronald McDonald House in its first year of working miracles. Each year since then, a thoroughly researched, tax-exempt children’s agency (or multiple agencies) benefits from the year-round fundraising program.

• Arizona ranks among the lowest in the country for funding human services. Your contribution will help us move up in the ranks by ensuring the longevity of local agencies that provide much needed services for our most vulnerable population.

• As a donor you can add to the over 24 million dollars already raised as we begin our 34th year of raising funds on behalf of the children in our community.

• We emphasize funding a one-time capital expenditure that retires a mortgage, remodels or renovates an existing structure, or constructs a new facility.

• We fund only agencies holding 501(c)3 status which meet the needs of children in Pima County.

• With no paid staff or executive director, we maximize the value of your donation. Your gift directly benefits the children of Pima County.

• Our beneficiary selection process includes a detailed application, multiple presentations, a thorough and professional analysis of financial statements as well as an investigation of mortgages and leases, and a site visit to help ensure each beneficiary is a viable, sustainable entity.

• A variety of children’s needs are considered for funding regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual preference or national origin.

• We are ranked among the top 100 charities by USA Today and have consistently achieved the highest rating with Charity Navigator and Guidestar.

Imago Dei Middle School

Project Description: Imago Dei Middle School has been breaking the cycle of poverty for ten years in Tucson by providing a tuition-free, private school education to children in grades 5 - 8 from low-income Tucson families. Only one of their alumni has dropped out of school in ten years and 85% of their alumni are pursuing higher education.

100% of the students attending Imago Dei Middle School are from families that qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced School Lunch program which means a family of two may have income of no more than $29,471 per year. The demographic breakdown of the school is 65.3% Latino, 23.6% African/African American, 4.2% Native American, 1.4% Caucasian and 5.5% other. Nearly half the students enter school as English Language Learners. Low income children of similar demographics have a nearly 70% high school dropout rate.

Imago Dei is committed to providing a comprehensive curriculum and support services including the following:

• Quality academic, physical, and social education • Individualized support, nurturing each child’s development and identity • An extended school day (10 hours), week (5 ½ days) and year (11 months) • Small classes for specialized instruction (teaching ratio of 1 to 10) • Tuition-free education • Opportunities for strong parental involvement • Educating the whole child and breaking cycles of poverty

The $600,000 request is for the down payment on the building that the school occupies and operates out of; the remainder of the purchase price (as established by an independent appraisal) will be carried back by the seller. By funding this request, the school is able to exercise its option to purchase the existing location instead of relocating the school. The school is in an ideal location as all students have access via public transportation via the Ronstadt Transit Center, directly across the street from the school.

Amount to be funded: $600,000

Educational Enrichment Foundation

Project Description: The Educational Enrichment Foundation (EEF) was established in 1993 to support the 49,000 students and teachers within 93 Tucson Unified School District schools. 70% of TUSD students qualify for free or reduced lunches and over 80 of these schools are Title I schools due to high poverty populations. The $148,150 in funding will sustain two years of EEF’s high school level program extracurricular activity participation fees for 950 impoverished Title I students and allow expansion of the scholarship program to the middle school level for two years of participation fees for 475 middle school students who qualify for free or reduced lunches.

The Interscholastic Scholarships program funding will expand the educational experiences of these high school and middle school students by allowing them to participate in extracurricular activities. These activities include school sports teams and fine arts activities like band, orchestra, dance, choir and academic competitive teams including Mock Trial and Future Business Leaders of America.

Unfortunately, because of lack of funding, all TUSD schools now require fees to participate in all extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing lessons learned in the classroom, result in consistent attendance, higher academic achievement and aspirations for continuing education beyond high school. The funding will allow economically disadvantaged high school and middle school students to participate in such activities. With participation also comes the responsibility of maintaining grades and attending classes as well as continuous participation in the activity funded.

97% of the seniors whose participation fees were paid by EEF for the past three years graduated, compared to the 81% graduation rate in TUSD. In addition, 83% of those students had enrolled in college, compared to the estimated state average of 52%. Expansion of funding to the middle school population is anticipated to further provide opportunities for academic success.

Amount to be funded: $148,150

Project description: Nourish was founded and became a 501(c)(3) organization in 2011 by a group of occupational therapists who specialize in working with children with feeding challenges. It was observed that changes in the economy and healthcare plans were significantly impacting a parent’s ability to acquire dietician and feeding therapy services and specialized feeding equipment. Since 2011 Nourish has provided over 500 scholarships to children with specific feeding concerns. Each year Nourish has been able to award more scholarships than the year before. This year, requests for services increased by 58%, last year’s increase was 51%. Nourish will receive $20,000. These funds will help children receive direct nutrition and feeding therapy in the early critical stages of growth and development to enable them to eat, grow, thrive and avoid long term delays. Children usually require a series of therapy sessions. With this grant, they will be able to serve 50 additional children, with up to 215 hours of individual therapy. Last fiscal year they directly served 90 children in Pima County with 470 hours of individual therapy.

Project description: St. John the Evangelist Catholic School (SJE) was founded in 1950 and is a PreK-8th grade located in the south side of Tucson that currently serves 370 children. SJE seeks to serve low-income families as a part of a national premier network of academically excellent, financially stable and distinctive Catholic PreK-8 Schools. SJE’s goal is to transform children’s lives through excellent school culture and rigorous academics. They also want to debunk the myth that low-income children cannot excel in school and continue to close the “achievement gap” between their students and the national averages on standardized tests. St. John the Evangelist Catholic School will receive $49,704 to purchase one (1) desktop computer and five (5) Chromebooks for each classroom PreK-8 for the 15 homerooms. These will replace the current teacher computers which were used in a college computer lab prior to being donated to SJE; they are end of life and do not support Microsoft Office. By investing in this technology, SJE teachers will be equipped with the tools to help students achieve success in the 21st century. Ultimately, SJE students will have the digital literacy skills needed to succeed when they enter high school.
