Ginamit ng UN ang HDI para malaman ang kalagayan ng mga bansang sakop nila para makatulong kahit papaano Dahil sa layuning makatulong ay bumuo sila ng samahang tinatawag na UNDP(United Nation Development Programme)
2004 sa tulong ni pangulong Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ay isinagawa ang pagkalap ng mga impormasyon sa ating bansa. Tatlong sukatan sa pagtataya ng HDI a. Life expectancy o ang tinatayang haba ng buhay ng isang tao at ng kabuuan b. Litearcy Rate o ang mga antas ng mga marunong bumasa at sumulat c. GDP( Gross Domestic Product) ang tinatayang kita ang isang tao sa sa kanayang sariling bansa.
