Personal Statement

During my time in higher education I have focused on print solutions, looking in depth at typography and publication design learning how to use a range of software.

I have a strong passion for design and believe that it holds great importance in the current era whether this is through environmental conscious projects or selecting the best approach for a low budget outcome.

It is often said that the difference between graphic design and art is that graphics design is used to communicate a message whether this be in relation to a product or a company. I think that it is from this that I have gained my love for typography, the written word is a proven method of communication and type design helps give a voice to almost unlimited number of combinations these little letterforms can create.

Since finishing University I have spent a lot more time creating typefaces which has resulted in the foundations of my own type foundry, this has been a good task to keep me busy whilst looking for design work and I have also learnt a lot more about the technical side of type design. Since starting this project one of my typefaces has been used for a headline font within the re-design of a leading woman’s magazine in India (Savvy).

This project is also improving my digital design skills with current creation of an online shop to distribute my fonts (www,tindtypefoundry.co.uk will soon be online). I wish to make it clear that this will take a back seat once I have obtained suitable employment, however it will always be a personal project that I will work on in my spare time.

I have a strong understanding of Adobe Creative Suite most used to using Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop with an understanding of the rest of the suite. I am also a fast learner and have previous worked in other design software such as Freehand, CorelDraw and Quark Xpress but my knowledge of these is limited. I am always pushed towards print solutions and have a good and ever growing knowledge of printing techniques and processes and I am always happy to learn more within this area of the industry.

Other Interests

I love music, all though my Ipod is a bit stuck in the 90’s, and I often enjoy relaxing and playing my guitar. Also there’s nothing better than a good movie, adding to my geekdom, I do love sci-fi but can enjoy films from a range of different genres.

I also have a passion for food, I have worked part time within the food and drink industry, mostly bars and kitchens, to support me throughout my education. It helped me improve my confidence and taught me how important it is in any work place, to work solidly as a team.

The following pages shows some of the work I completed in my final years of university. It is compiled as a mix of set briefs, live briefs and self directed projects.

In The Red 10Poetry Publication

This was a collaberative project with LJMU’s Creative Writing BA. With their im-put I art directed the project, the low budget on this project forced me to follow very strict limitations, however I overcame these by using a ‘lo-fi’ design method.

For this project I was in charge of collecting a range of quotes and samples from various printers and organise all production of the publication. This was one of my favourite aspects of this project learning how to communicate with printers in the correct and professional manner.

The Liverpool School of Art and Design (LSAD) is

situated in the Art and Design Academy (ADA), a

modern purpose-built building in the heart of

Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter.

LSAD is the oldest school of art and design in England

outside London, dating back to 1825, when it started life

as the Liverpool Mechanics’ School of Art Institute with

the purpose of providing education to working men. By

the 1850s a School of Art was evolving and in 1856 a

new name recognised this development – The Liverpool

Institute and School of Art. In the 1880s a new building

on Hope Street, adjacent to the principle building on

Mount Street, was opened to house the School of Art

The aim of this project was to produce a publication which celebrated the art school as well as giving an insight in to the workings of each course.

During this project I experimented with various formats including coptic stitch binding, however after looking at the purpose of the piece and the high cost that would be involved with coptic binding at a large scale the final piece was produced using a glue bound format.

Boasting more museums and galleries than any other city in the UK outside London, and European Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool is rapidly becoming regarded as a European Centre for Contemporary Art. The major Contemporary Art institutions in Liverpool are Liverpool Tate, Liverpool Biennial, A-Foundation, FACT and the Bluecoat. All of these institutions directly support the work we are doing with our students.

We also work with major organisations in the UK and abroad such as Grizedale Arts and Van Abbemuseum. Being a student on our course is both exhilarating and challenging. You will be supported in the development of your own Fine Art practice and, at the same time, expected to show an increasing ability to develop your own ideas in the studio environment and to make things happen in the real world outside. The BA (Hons) Fine Art course at LJMU happens in the new ‘Art and Design Academy’, an award winning and purpose built building which acts as the hub of our activities.

We offer all First Year Students the opportunity to work with a professional arts agency/gallery in the city and to have course work shown publically in live gallery and/or site specific locations. We are a contemporary and forward looking Course. We are open to students developing work in any media. We encourage our students to be both creative and critical and to develop a strong, highly motivated critical and professional practice. At the core of our teaching is the opportunity we offer our students to engage in work experience and live projects.

After completing your Degree here with us, you will attain exemptions from RIBA/ARB Part 1 examinations.Many of our graduates have successfully secured employment at world-class practices throughout nationally and internationally.By choosing to study in Liverpool you will experience the energy and vitality that the city, its architecture and recent key events such as The European Capital of Culture & the ongoing Biennial Programme will complement design projects devised in the course.You will get the chance to be involved directly in live projects that have a direct link to the city with cultural, artistic and public communities. Architecture is keen to collaborate with other institutions in the city: a recent example includes the partnership with the RIBA to stage Le Corbusier’s exhibition: The Art Of Architecture at the crypt of the Liverpool Metropolitan Catholic Cathedral and will be partnering FACT (Foundation of Arts and Creative Technologies) in a number of future projects within the city. The brand new state of the arts ADA (Art and Design Academy) will provide you with the most up date facilities to complement your studies in architecture. The Architecture course is full-time. Your weekly timetable may typically include studio design projects & workshops, theoretical lectures and seminars to include the following: History and Theory, Technology and Practice, (CAAD) Computer Aided Architectural Design sessions and other skills workshops. All modules require you to spend a proportion of personal study time in addition to taught sessions in order to fulfil the learning objectives, this could be as much as 60% of the total learning hours allocated to a particular module. Below is the list of modules that make up the course curriculum. All courses include a total of 360 credits overall, with each year or ‘level’ providing 120 credits. In most cases individual modules are worth 24 credits, with the exception of Design modules where the course emphasis is placed. These have a weighting of 72 credits to reflect their importance and significance as part of your overall learning experience.

Taxi Driver ‘Are you talking to me?’ Monologue Poster

Typeset poster designed with the aim of reflecting the two sides to his conversation with himself. Originally hand drawn in pencil of a pillow case connecting to Travis Bickle writing the speech down in his journal, and to his constant battle with insomnia.

Typographic design....

I have a love for typograpy and producing typefaces, here you can see some of the font’s I have recently created. I am still learning all the in and outs of type design but I have a good understanding of what works and what doesn’t.I find that using bespoke type designs within work helps to make pieces feel original and unique and opens up for a range of possible outcomes within indentity design and corrsponding marketing material.
