  • ANDRÁS HALÁSZ

As a student András Halász called together several avant-garde artists to take a stand against the enforced communism. They opposed the artistic limitations that the regime had thrust upon them. Halász displayed his work in private houses, community centres and alternative clubs. He experimented with different art forms such as photograms, conceptual work and performances. In 1978 he left Hungary and from then on worked frequently both in Paris and New York, thus escaping the restriction of artistic activities in his homeland. Since 1990, the artist has been able to visit his native country legally and since 2005 has been living once again in Budapest, where he teaches at the University of Fine Arts.

1972-1976 Hungarian College of Fine Arts, Budapest, Painting and Graphics (Masters: Szilárd Iván, Károly Raszler)

1972 Study trip to Paris, France 1976 He's an organizer and participant in a group of artist formed at the college, which presented themselves in the Rose Espresso with fluxus-like actions, called: Rose group (Rózsa csoport)

1979 teaching art at Attila József Culture House in Budapest

1975-1979 has regularly participated in various progressive exhibitons and actions 1979 He emigrated, settling first in Paris and then in New York

1982-1984 P. S. 1, a two-year scholarship to New York, which provided him with a studio and an exhibition opportunity

1983-1987 he was regularly featured in East Village galleries

1990 he has been exhibiting regulary in Hungary. Already at the beginning of his career, ha made it clear that he wanted to make art that's able to express thoughts in such a way that the intellectual, intellectual content in the image not only appears as an illustration, but becomes part of the form of the work. This conscious art program brings together his work created in otherwise diverse materials and genres - painting, graphics, environment, action, photography and texts. In addition to flux-like actions, environments, textual conceptual works, he implemented this program most successfully in the photogram genre in the 1970s. He displayed logical, philosophical connections and paradoxes in these photograms, which cannot be verified in a verbal-logical way, but can be seen on the picture.

The part is larger than the whole, the whole, the deficit seems to be surplus, the mirror and the mirror are interchanged. At the same time, those sometimes large-scale photograms, renewing the traditional language of the photogram, also have picturesque-aesthetic value. (Interest, 1978; Pre-Religious Status, 1979). Likewise his analysis of images of famous masterpieces also resulted in new, surprising image qualities, during which he researched visual qualities and thought contents not previously discovered in images with the means of drawing, photography, photogram and the method of copying, further copying and variation (Kandinsky-painting, Disaster, 1977).

  • In New York painting has become his main genre, but philosophical-conceptual thinking is still present in his paintings. In his figural images painted with black paint of different materials on a black background, the subjects depicted appear only in certain light, which are thus expressive pictorial formulations of the "there is, but it doesn't appear" phenomenon of another paradox displayed in photograms. (Black Porn, 1983; Pope John Paul II, 1984). In the early 1990s, gambling was a defining theme in several of his works as a concrete experience and as a world model or metaphor of destiny. His 38-piece computer-graphic series with a schematic representation of the roulette ball and its rotation is not a representation of the game of roulette, but a representation of the mathematical-physical-philosophical relationship inherent in gambling (Atlantic City, 1992). The theme of the game appears in a completely different form on his billiard paintings. Here he realized a new pictorial concept in which reality and its representation could hardly be separated. A series of pictures painted on a green billiard table-sized billiard table seems to be an imprint of a real billiard game of the present time or an expressive pictorial representation of the game (Chelsea Billiard, 1993).

In his oil paintings painted in the second half of the 90s, we can see within a picture the reality, the place where he lives and works - studio image - and the imaginary world, what he's thinking about - the representation of alchemical symbols -; the coexistence and opposition of the two worlds is both the subject and the form of the image (Children of Mercury, 1995).
