Welcome to Baton Rouge, capital of the great state of Louisiana, and to the Crowne Plaza Hotel for a somewhat compressed and continually adjusted meeting schedule. Having been elected to serve this audacious fraternity was truly a great honor for me. Because of my belief that Templary is the highest honor in Masonry, I have strived hard to serve this organization and you Sir Knights to the best of my ability. I have said many times throughout my travels around the state, that nowhere else can you truly say you are a soldier of Christ, than as a Knights Templar. I would like to acknowledge and give my sincere appreciation to many Sir Knights that recommended me to begin this journey, kept me “fired-up” and going, and supported me or scolded me along the way as needed. First and foremost, our Most Worshipful Grand Master Mickey Durand, and Right Eminent Past Department Commander Howard Entwistle, who asked me if I’d be interested in serving and committing the time and energy to this honor. Thank you so much for your faith and guidance. To my good friend, Sir Knight Robert Laurents, and my “brother”, Sir Knight Tim Riley, for traveling with me over these years, and listening to all my “discussions” during those travels. To all the Past Right Eminent Grand Commanders I had the privilege to serve under and learn from; Right Eminent Sirs Pat Dickson, Keith Powell, Bill Mollere, and Frank DuTreil. Of course a leader is only as good as his secretary, and I certainly have one of the best recorders in the nation, and I am so thankful for his tireless efforts for our great fraternity. Thank you HPGC Robert Durham, you have been a god-send. There are so many others that I could never mention them within this address. Leave it to say that everywhere I traveled, the hospitality and brotherhood extended has been more than anyone could ever imagine. I sincerely appreciate all the hospitalities extended, and look forward to visiting my friends for many years to come. Thank you all for making us feel loved and at home. No one can lead without first being taught, and I must give a sincere thank you to my “home” Commandery, Ascension #06. This group of men have become and are a family that I look to continue to do great things for Masonry in our state. It is with great pride to me that they traveled completely across the state to support me as Grand Commander and open our Grand Conclave. Thank you, Sir Knights. You have all heard how this group has been meeting regularly to practice for openings and festivals. How someone always volunteers to bring a meal, and the fellowship has led to a kindred that has spilled over into the other areas of Masonry which we all serve. I love these guys, and thank God for the opportunity to be a member of their group. There is an old saying that a man is only as successful as the woman behind him. Well, again, I have been truly blessed. My lady was raised in a Masonic family. Her parents were active in the Eastern Star, and her father was a Past Master in Lafayette. She and her sister were active in the Rainbow Girls, and many of her closest friends today are friends she made those many years ago. Her husband, who predeceased her, served as a Past Grand Worthy Patron of Eastern Star. So, it was with little effort that she has been able to travel throughout the state with friends and acquaintances everywhere we traveled. Thank you Carolyn Edgar for all that you do for me, with me, and in spite of me. You have truly been a lady and a friend that I needed.

Your Grand Line Officers that served with me this past year have been a blessing also. Each of them are leaders within their Blue Lodges, and within many of the appendant bodies such as the Scottish Rite. Their commitment and dedication to Masonry is to be commended. I appreciate those that were able to travel and support Templary within the state and across the nation. You couldn’t ask for a better deputy, and I am very glad that SK Richard Fox will follow me and continue a great effort of service. I have to brag on SK Holley. Due to a conflict with a funeral during South Central, he made arrangements and attended another conference to learn the things that we officers need to pick up on at these “schools”. SK Freeman was very helpful when a prior engagement I had was forcing me to miss the Grand Amaranth Session. Thank you, my Brother, for stepping in and representing the Grand Commandery. SKs Lazar and Owens have shown that they are committed to you, and will make an impact of Templary in Louisiana. All of the officers and aides did a good job of what was asked of them to do, thank you all for your service. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and thank all of those from the Grand Encampment and other Grand Commandery Jurisdictions that were a part of this year. First and foremost, I would like to thank our Most Eminent Grand Master of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar, Sir Knight David Dixon Goodwin. It was indeed a great honor and privilege that he was in attendance at our 151st Grand Conclave, and honored us by installing the 2015 Officers. Not many Grand Commanders have had that honor, and to be sure, it was truly a fulfilling opportunity. Our Right Eminent Department Commander of the South Central Department, Sir Knight T. Michael Fegan of Kansas, worked well with us and was a pleasure to visit with throughout the year. I’d like to thank the Grand Encampment Representative to our Grand Conclave, Right Eminent Michael Burke Johnson, the Right Eminent Grand Captain General. RE Sir Johnson hails from Wyoming and has been a good friend to Louisiana Templary for several years. We are honored to have him in attendance, and welcome him to our Southern Hospitality. Each jurisdiction which I had the opportunity to visit, the Grand Commander, and in most cases their Grand Master of Masons for that state, were very cordial and friendly. I will cherish the friendships we made, and look forward to visiting them again. A Grand Commander has no excuse to not have a successful year, especially with the resources found right here in Louisiana. With our living Past Department Commanders Earl Little, Lloyd Hebert, and Howard Entwistle, you have an invaluable tool of knowledge, experience, and connections throughout the entire Grand Encampment. Through their service and experience, they have given wise counsel and assistance throughout the year. There are so many other Sir Knights throughout the state that receive little or no recognition, however their service is as important or more so as those of us who stand in the limelight. These Sir Knights have unselfishly given of their time and talents to set up rooms for meetings, festivals, and assemblies. They come early to cook meals, and stay late to clean kitchens and wash dished. These Sir Knights work behind the scenes, many times unrecognized, but vital in the smooth operation of our fraternity. To you, Sir Knights, thank you so very much for your dedication and service. Over the years, I have had the honor and privilege to attend and bring greetings to the Rainbow Girls and DeMolay Assemblies. They have a saying that I found very fitting, and that we not only as Sir Knights, but in all of Masonry, should heed, “From the ranks you have come, and to the ranks you shall return”. A very humbling statement, but so very true. No matter what our rank, we should always remember that we are all on the level, and that a Master Mason is the basis for all we believe. And should we never let accolades from our brothers raise us to a level of haughtiness that we forget the motto of our Order, “Not unto us, O’ Lord, not unto us, but unto your name be the Glory!”.

STATE OF THE ORDER The State of the Order of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Louisiana is actually in good standing. While there remains many areas which need work and constant effort, we see so much good coming out of the efforts of our local Commanderies. The tireless efforts of the leaders and membership of each Commandery, has proven that this fraternity will continue to offer great things for our state. Membership has been a major issue for many years, not only in Masonry, but with most civic organizations around the country. While we continue to see a decrease in membership, we were able to see improvement within the Knights Templar. Preliminary totals show a net loss of only 44 members for 2014 across the entire state. While this is still a problem, the confidence that it is nearly 2/3 lower than the past several years, shows that perhaps we are reaching the bottom of a cycle, and about to begin a growth cycle which will take us back to those membership totals of glory years. We are excited with the number of Commanderies which are striving to hold 16-man openings. This shows that they want to involve more men in this Christian branch of Masonry. While there were a couple of Commanderies which showed some areas of concern, we had a couple of others that just came bucking out of the chute. Bethlehem Commandery #21 actually opened correctly and in proper form for the first time in many years, hosted a school of instruction, and grew by 10 new Sir Knights this past year. Other local Commanderies which had growth years in membership were: Payen #16; Crusader #21; Istrouma #28; and C.A. Everitt #29. Three lost only one member total through the year, and another ended at scratch with no change in membership. Five actually lost total members for the year, however they did a proper job of knighting new Sir Knights, but couldn’t overcome the deaths that occurred. Several of the local bodies saw new leadership within their assemblies, and some efficient and productive changes in the ways things were done. This resulted in a couple of them finding their membership rolls “cleaned up” and brought into a more accurate accounting of true numbers of Sir Knights. The Louisiana Supplement of the Knight Templar Magazine was again masterly administered by REPGC Richard James. He continues to do a great service to the York Rite in Louisiana by soliciting articles and photographs of topics of interest to our membership, and having them placed in the magazine. Thanks to all of you whom have contributed to this effort. SK James was very diligent in making sure that each body received attention and that each article was interesting. Our Knight Templar Eye Foundation continues to thrive. This past year, we placed an emphasis on promoting 100% participation in the Life Sponsor program. We saw many Sir Knights take this opportunity to participate and support this great philanthropy. Our VEDGC Fox has again promised to continue the effort to have 100% participation of all Sir Knights in Louisiana. I would encourage each of you to consider doing this. Not only does it save your local assembly money, it helps a worthy cause. Probably the hardest worked chairman this year was Sir Knight Joseph Patterson, chairman of the Knights Templar Holy Land Tour. Of course I say this in good natured jest, but I do appreciate this relatively new Sir Knight for agreeing to take on the responsibility of so great and important project. Ideally, this program is one of the best ways we serve non-Templar Christians throughout our state. By sponsoring pastors to visit the land where Jesus walked and held his ministry, local preachers have the opportunity to see, learn, and experience a new perspective with which to bring the gospel back to their congregation. Unfortunately, due to the conflicts in the Middle East and surrounding regions, it was deemed unsafe to send tour groups over this year. However, even though we didn’t actively participate by sending anyone, SK Patterson promoted the program and kept interest alive. Thank you for your efforts. I would like to thank Gerald Houston, Most Eminent Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons, and Carle Jackson, Illustrious Grand Master of Royal & Select Masters for serving their York Rite Bodies in conjunction with me. They are vital to the success of Knights Templar, if for no other reason than one has to pass their portals to be eligible to be a Sir Knight. It has been an interesting year serving with them.

ADMINISTRATIVE AIDES AND AIDES DE CAMP I asked young men whom I knew through other appendant bodies of Masonry to get involved in Templary, and to bring their enthusiasm and experience from those other bodies into our fraternity. These men had done great work within the DeMolay, Shrine, and Scottish Rite Bodies. And, I appreciate their dedication to take a more active approach within Templary and to help to motivate interest and growth. Serving as Administrative Aides were: #01 – Wilson O. Cook, PC; #02 – Wesley “Junior” Hebron; #03 – Tom Kussman, PC; #04 – Andrew Owen; and #05 – Eddie LeBoeuf III. Serving as Aide-De-Camps were: #01 - Barlow Holley; #02 – Luke Guy; #03 – Charles Bertrand, PC; #04 – Rory Bozeman, PC; and #05 – Donald Freeze. Sir Knights, I personally thank you for your service rendered during this past year and your dedication to Templary.

NECROLOGY We had many Sir Knights who performed many missions of service to Templary, sheathed their swords for the final time, and went to that house not built by hands. We grieve them and honor their dedicated service. We had 34 Sir Knights from around the state which have passed on, and we will have a Memorial & Divine Service on Sunday, near the close of this Joint Session.

TRAVEL A complete listing of my travels is included following this report. However, I would like to say it has been a truly fun and exhilarating experience to have had the opportunity to travel and represent the Grand Commandery wherever we traveled. The day after being installed, we traveled to Mississippi for their Grand Conclave, traveling into Tennessee the next week for their Grand Lodge session. It seemed to never stop after that, except for few weeks off to heal from knee surgery. VEDGC Fox covered for me in Missouri during that time, but then I was able to return to the road and represent you in Oklahoma, Texas, at South Central in Kansas, the SE Conference of Grand Masters, and the many other Masonic functions around the state and country. It was a pleasure to get to visit with our MEGM Goodwin at many of these functions, but especially at Shrine Imperial in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As I said at the top of this address, never was I not made to feel like I was truly welcome and a part of this family. I always enjoy the courtesies extended to me, but especially in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans.

OBLIGATORY SERVICES The Grand Recorder has detailed the totals from each reporting Commandery during the year. It was my honor to attend so many of the services with so many of the different Commanderies. I attended the Templar/Scottish Rite Joint Easter Service in Baton Rouge, and the Easter Service at Yellow Pine Christian Church with Ascension and Crusader Commanderies. Although not obligatory, was able to attend and pay respects to our military dead at Memorial Day Services at Hillcrest Cemetery and Greenwood Cemetery. Attended Ascension Day Services with Indivisible Friends in New Orleans, Rhodes Commandery in Leesville, and Payen Commandery in Lafayette. And, shared in Christmas Observance with Ascension Commandery in Shreveport, Crusader Commandery in Bossier City, and Trinity Commandery in Alexandria.

NOT FAREWELL, BUT PERHAPS “GOOD RIDDANCE”

Again, Sir Knights, thank you so very much for allowing me to serve you as Grand Commander. Although there were some circumstances that “threw me in the fire” a little earlier than the normal route, we were able to persevere and have a good year. There are always things that you had wanted to try or accomplish during your time at the helm, but under the circumstances we worked with what we had, and had such an amazing time. As I said earlier, “from the ranks you shall come, and to the ranks you shall return”. Although my term as Grand Commander is coming to an end, I shall return and remain active as a “foot soldier”, always here to serve and assist. Thank you all for your support and confidence, it is truly an honor that I will cherish the rest of my days. God Bless each and every one of you. Thank you.

GENERAL ORDER NO. 2 BOSSIER CITY, LOUISIANA SERIES 2014-2015 SEPTEMBER 3, 2014 After discussion with the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, MW: Earl J. Durand, I am issuing the following General Order.

The Grand Master's letter dated July 15, 2014 concerned the appearance of the Masonic Square & Compass being displayed alongside other emblems which might give a bad public connotation to Masonry, and on uniforms or items of clothing which might be soiled or worn in inappropriate establishments.

While the “Skull & Crossbones” have significant meaning in both the Scottish Rite and York Rite degrees, many people outside of Masonry do not understand its true origin and meaning, and interpret it as being associated with pirates, poisons, or satanic usages.

Therefore, I am issuing a concurrent General Order barring the public display by Knights Templar of the Skull & Crossbones emblem, or any emblem in association with the Masonic Square & Compass, which may give the uninformed public a misunderstood or unfavorable opinion of Masonry.

It is hereby ordered and directed that this General Order be read in open Commandery at its next Conclave. Given under my hand and the seal of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Louisiana, this Third day of September, A. D., 2014, A. O. 896.
