International CommunityHostel at MIT

Project: Design a hostel for international scholars, pro-fessors, and students at MIT, providing both public space and private living space.

Duration: 6-8 weeks

Professor: Joel Turkel

Class: 4.104 Architectural Intentions

Thoughts: The site location provided great views of

Boston, which I wanted to take advantage of without ignroing the MIT campus. The layers of traffic flow, both pedestrian and automo-tive, moving past the site also factored into the plan. The final programming of the public space includes a ground level coffee house with performace space, upper level restau-rant with outdoor seating facing the river, and study space tying together the public and private areas. The lower level living area pro-vides short term housing similar to hostels in Europe, with long term, more private living on the upper level of the building.

New VisionA Medical Imaging Device

Project: Design, build, and program a prototype of a medical imaging device for use during proton beam therapy.

Duration: 3 Months

Advisor: Yuri Ivanov

Summer 2008: Internship, Mitsubishi Electric Research Lab

Thoughts: The task of building a working prototype of

a medical imagine device gave me an oppor-tunity to combine engineering and design in a new way. Building the prototype gave me exposure to a number of new machines, including the HAAS CNC and ShopBot. Get-ting involved in the shop building, soldering, measuring, and tweaking was a great part of the design experience. On the front end, the MicrChip had to be programmed using C, and the UI was created using FLTK. Talking to the encoders through the chip and then make the information understandable to the user was a new workflow that involved a range of skills.

Music within NaturePerformance in the Quarry

Project:Design a performance space for an artist with-in the Rockport Quarry.

Duration: 2 weeks

Professor: Jan Wampler

Class: Architecture in Landscape

Thoughts:The quarry was a study in contrasts. The quiet, natural feeling of the space belied the fact that the entire site was man made. The still water of

the quarry was in sharp contrast to the ocean pounding on the rocks just past the site. The most poignant things about the site were the reminders of its past life: the metal handles attached to rocks, the perfect drill holes still visible. I wanted my performance to have this same feel of history, to be obviously man made but feel natural and unintrusive. Choosing to develop a performance space for the celtic fiddle group Leahy, I used large metal arches to define a space where the performer and au-dience interact, and can also be enjoyed when the quarry is quiet.

Visualizing MusicIntegrated Design

Project: Design and build a project with shows mastery of most of the skills taught in the class.

Duration: 2-3 weeks

Professor: Neil Gershenfeld

Class: MAS.863 How to Build Almost Anything

Thoughts: The goal behind this project was to demon-strate mastery of several of the skills and ma-chines taught in the class. My personal goal was to design and build something that rep-

resented a new way to visualize music. The piano keys, which I created using a lasercutter, were to be connected to valves which would allow an air bubble to pass into the vertical tubes containing water, when the key was pressed. The bubble would be sensed by the capacitance sensor located near the top of the tubes and then play the appropriate note, us-ing the modela for cutting out the circuits and assembly language for programming. This was an involved project for the three week time period because the relationship between the water, valves, and pressurized air needed more time to be resolved, but that is a matter of time rather than concept.

A Peek into the FutureLiving in the North End

Project: Design an apartment in the North End for my-self ten years in the future.Duration: 4 weeks

Professor: Jan Wampler

Class: Architecture in Landscape

Thoughts: I first became a member of the Boston North End community during the 2006 FIFA World Cup when I cried, laughed, and cheered in the streets with all of the other fans. My apartment

cascades down the side of a building, mimick-ing the movement of fthe beautiful North End fire escapes. The slanted roofs make the expe-rience in each room dynamic, while also taking advantage of the southern sun. My bedroom has a large wall of windows to keep me con-nected to the street life, and my guest room/study is on the same level as the kitchen to keep visitors connected and involved. I have a music room/library at the top of my apart-ment, my quiet sanctuary above the bustle of daily life. Each inch of my apartment is well thought out.

A Visiting Artist’s StudioDevelopment of Boston’s Piers

Project: Creating a place for an artist to live, work, and interact with the public as a part of the rede-velopment of Boston’s piers.

Duration: 6-8 weeks

Professor: Angela Watson

Class: Integrated Architecture

Thoughts: Designing for the waterfront required con-

sideration of the industrial nature of the area behind the site and the waterscape in front of the site. The attitude of the new ICA building and the plans for redevelopment also factored in. My design features three large spaces, with the most prominent being the gallery space for the visiting artist. The studio space is on the ground floor to encourage the artist to interact with the public and the site, as well as for prac-tical reasons. The roofs are sloped and sepa-rated from the walls so that the space within the building changes as you move into it and natural light is maximized.
