UTOPIAN CITy ....Utopia, a dream of a dream. The word as well as the meaningof it is more ethereal thanspecific or objective. It is a state of perfect beingintotality, which perhaps can never beachieved. As any state of creation that can achieve in itself total perfection, would beadream world than reality.Havingaccepted the fact that a total Utopian society is an unachievablebelief, can wetalkabout a more realistic approach of trying to achieveas much as possible of this dream butyet makeit realistic workable through architecture.then HOWdo weperceive it ...?Is it possible to create a structure which is more ethereal than concrete? at least inearlystages of conception? .. Slowly this can beconverted to more specific concrete formsHow do we as an individual, perceive this state of perfection knowingthat in its ultimatetrue sense it is unattainable, keepingin mind that any thought of compromise will deviatefrom the essential Utopian Concept.Let's take a simple natural exampleof day and night ...Physical Nature of Things - NeverChange.Physical Nature of Space - NeverChanges.Yet, addition of light or lack of it (total darkness) and intermediary stages createdifferent dimensions inour perception. Canweplay on this or similar thoughts ... ??Student should firstly try to understand the true nature of an utopian state and thentry to translate the same into physical forms and shapes. Theexercise is to get as closeas possible. The participant should therefore define his thinking and philosophy andthereafter he should attempt to translate it into physical form and architecturallanguage.Students are therefore urged not to start thinking of physical elements of constructionbut to model out in their minds a state of Utopia inastructure; thereafter to take a stepfurther and think of housing it physically.

OBJECTIVE:As mentioned in the preamble above, the student is required to state in writing orotherwise his understanding of the state of utopia.

How heconceives the idea, what would bethe type of inhabitant init. How hefeels this can beachieved and Howheintends to proceed to translate this abstract thought into objective

rendering.Students can now start putting their perception on paper and support it if possible bysketches, picture images etc. The participants can then proceed to demonstrate howthey wish to translate their concepts into physical form, shape and spaces. The nitty grities of the requirements are specifically left vague as we wish to give fullfreedom to the student to use his imagination and expression.Initial conception, theories, philosophy, thought process is an important part of thedesign and designingat a conceptual levelis expected apart from the detailing part of it.

    THEPROGRAMME:

The design problem here is to develop a multi functional hub or a structure for a smallcommunity (an ideal neighbourhood) which will be based on the utopian thoughts, philosophy, principles etc.Students are expected to play on the thought that a structure itself can be Utopian.Participants are expected to makethe Structure Utopian( or try to reach to that state)through architecture.Play with natural elements like light/ darkness, landscape elements etc. along withelements likeforms, shape, colour, texture etc isexpected. It should be an development which will be an idealistic module for the city which is growingeveryday.Students can then expand this hub/ development to a community with spaces to live in,work and also relevant spaces for health, education, recreation ( consider aneighbourhood of approx 1000-1500 units (families))so ....Can we create a structure which at different times of the day or whatever appearsdifferent'?'?"

THESITE:The selection of the site is left on the participants, however, the site should be locatedaway from a crowded city (approx 3-5 km) and approached by proper road.It will be encumberment on the students to explain why he/she has chosen thisparticular site and how would it help them in the creation.Any and all the assumptions having a bearing on the design should be prominentlystated andjustified ..SUBMISSIONREQUIREMENTS:Site , surroundings with relevent writeups and explanation of selection of the sitecomposed on maximumof 3 A3 sheetsInitial Conception, philosophy, ideas, thought process onshould becomposed on maximumof 3 A3 sheets.Transformation of the concept to a concrete or physical form on maximum of 6 A3sheets.Expansion of the concept from a hubto a community on maximumof 3 A3 sheets(can beat a conceptual levelwith relevant details to support the idea)Students are expected to work out the structure/ hub and demonstrate the same indetail, however the later part of expansion to a neighbourhood (or community level) can bea conceptual design.
