“We are baptized members of God’s
Church, forgiven and set free by grace
through faith. We proclaim Christ in
Word, Sacraments, Witness and
Service.”
Pastor’s Notes
It shouldn’t be so difficult, but it is.
How do we tell our community, and people who may have had a
bad experience with “church” & been turned off to religion, or
people who assume we’re just like the church they read about in
some magazine or Facebook story, - - how do we tell our com-
munity that grace is our main thing. That showing grace is what
we do - - or strive to do.
That not only are you welcome here, we expect you to be fully
engaged in everything God calls us to do.
One way of looking at the history of our tradition is as an ever
expanding circle of recognizing Gods love.
One way of looking at our understanding of the Christian life is
as an arms-wide-open approach to the world, with an eyes-wide-
open awareness.
Discipleship is arms-wide-open in welcome, in service and in
prayer. And we sing pretty good too!
Pastor Ogden

Donations through May 3rd are $45,355.19. The boiler and roof projects are complete and we are
building up the account to address the remaining projects during 2015.
If it is possible to complete your 2015 pledge by this June or July it would help us complete
the remaining projects, all of which are outdoor projects.
Our next project will be repairing the sinkhole in the parking lot near Mears Avenue. This is
difficult to estimate, until it gets opened up and we know for certain what we have to deal with.
We are excited to report that this project will get started on Monday, May 11th.
The Craft Fair was a huge success! Thanks to planning of Rachel Bartlett and the many volun-
teers, we raised $934.00. This more than doubled the previous years total.
The Steak Fry will be Tuesday, June 16th. Please mark this date on your calendar and if you
can help, let Cheri Crouch know.

From AARP Bulletin / January / February 2015
Q: My wife has early-onset dementia. When I call to ask about her retirement account or credit
cards, the reps need her permission to speak with me, which she can’t give. What should I do?
A: This is a powerful reminder of the need for a properly executed power of attorney. Had your
wife given you her POA as soon as she got the diagnosis, you’d have the right to manage her
affairs. It might not be too late, says Rebekah Brooker, an attorney with Scheef & Stone in Dal-
las. People with dementia often have good days as well as bad ones. On a good day, your wife
could legally sign a power of attorney. If your wife doesn't have good days, your only option is
the complexity of a legal guardianship.

You are invited to join others from our Synod for a bike ride that starts at Lebanon on Satur-
day, June 13 at 9:30 am. The goal for some of us will be 30 miles, but you are free to ride as
many or as few as you wish. We’ll eat lunch at the end of the ride, if you are interested.

From the publication White Lake Reminiscences
The White Lake Reminiscences was wrong about
one thing - June 6, not January 6. So on June 7,
2015, we celebrate our 143rd year with a potluck
at noon. Ham will be provided. Bishop Satterlee
will be with us representing the congregations
united together as the North/West Lower Michi-
gan Synod of the ELCA.
In an article submitted by Helen Bartlett
In the Year 1872.
The President of the United States of America was
Ulysses S. Grant, who was running for a second
term. He was re-elected in 1872 over Horace
Greely, who died later that year. A Republican,
Henry Wilson, was nominated by the Radicals for
the vice presidency on the Republican ticket in
1871. ( He died in office in 1875).
Grant won the re-election with 286 electoral
votes. In his 2nd inaugural address, he expressed
regrets that the nation failed to annex the Domini-
can Republic. He urged the reform of civil service
and asked for clemency toward Indians. Grant’s
administration was known for corruption and
scandal, but he signed the Amnesty Act of 1872,
restoring citizenship to most confederate sympa-
thizers .
Michigan led the states in lumbering, starting in
1870, and helping the Mid West development.
Michigan led the nation in lumber products, also.
Michigan’s governor was Henry Baldwin in 1872.
March 1, 1872, Yellowstone National Park was
established as the first National park.
Charles XV of Sweden and Norway died, suc-
ceeded by his brother Oscar II.
Susan B. Anthony voted in defiance of the law
arrested, tried & fined $100, which she never paid.

Trinity Lutheran Church, 2700 E. Fulton,
Grand Rapids, MI for one of Lost and
Found’s farewell concerts.
Trinity Lutheran Church will be hosting Lost and
Found on Wednesday, June 17 at 7:00 pm
“LOST AND FOUND” Michael Bridges and
George Baum, have been traveling around the
world performing concerts of their original
music and making friends in the process,
since they were in high school. Their music is
the kind of thing that often prompts reactions
like, “Well, I have never heard anything like
that before.”
This is a free event but a free will offering
will be taken during the concert.
