Jack Petchey Award Winners Kirsty Barre$ joined the school a couple of years ago and quickly

se$led in. She wanted to contribute to the school community so

volunteered as an an"-bullying ambassador. She was nominated

by the whole of a year 9 form group aBer leading an assembly to

them on 4th November and was truly inspira"onal in sharing

her own experiences of being bullied. This in turn showed why

she wanted to help others as an

an"-bullying ambassador.

Her money is going towards

some staging rostra for drama.

Maddie-Mai Harris-Knell looks

aBer her Nan, Mum and

younger brother at home. Her

Nan had a nasty fall and has been bed-bound for 18 months, but

Maddie helps look aBer her in between visits from her carers. She

also looks aBer other family

members as they find it difficult to

do so themselves. Despite all of

this and coping with her own

issues, she has se$led in well since

moving to the School in June and is

focussing well on her studies.

Sports Markeng Presentaon Well done to those Year 12 and 13 students who

enthusias"cally engaged during a sports marke"ng

presenta"on led by Ashley Guymer from JMI Sport

and Entertainment. Pupils gained an insight into an

array of career opportuni"es within different

professional sectors. InsighGul ques"ons were asked

and all pupils received signed Lewis Hamilton

photographs for their par"cipa"on.

Handball Success Congratula"ons to the Essex U16 boys and girls handball teams. Both teams

played in the na"onal tournament on Sunday 3rd

January in Stoke Mandeville

and played some fantas"c handball. Both teams finished third in the country,

which is a huge achievement. This is a great

success for Bromfords as a school due to both

Essex teams predominantly consis"ng of

Bromfords pupils. Ellie Crocker was the most

valuable player for the girls and both Ezra

StraGord and Ellio$ Thompson were

outstanding throughout the whole tournament for the boys.

Christmas Box Appeal During December, students and parents of The Bromfords School and Sixth Form College donated

items to create Christmas hampers to deliver to our local neighbours. Over 30 students and many

members of staff worked through their lunch breaks and free "me in the hope of bringing some

fes"ve cheer to the local community by surprising them with some beau"ful parcels. This is the

fourth year running we have

organised the Christmas Box

Appeal which proved a huge

success last year.

On Wednesday 16th

December

students loaded up the Bromfords

Sleigh to make their special

Christmas deliveries to some of

our local residents.

Selma Baker, who organised the

appeal, said she has been

overwhelmed by the responses

for dona"ons.

Year 10 Rugby Coaching Course Basildon Rugby Club run a Year 10 coaching course where Year 10 students coach Year 7 students,

which takes place every Tuesday aBer school, allowing them to gain a rugby qualifica"on. Below is

an extract Shae Corrigan wrote about his experience as a coach:

“I am lucky to be part of this course because it is very helpful to develop my skills as a coach and a

referee. I was selected as I enjoy rugby a lot and I take part in aer school acvies and games and

I also play outside of school at county level. I aend the course every Tuesday aer school 3 ll 4

along with other year 10s that are developing their skills as coaches. On a typical session I have to

get the boys to warm up and

stretch before they go into

things like tackling and games

and I help the boys improve on

passing, tackling and

understanding the rules of the

sport. I am enjoying being part

of this because it’s a really

good course and I enjoy

teaching the boys rugby. The

students we coach enjoy it

because we make it fun and we

get all the boys involved. I hope

being part of this programme

will help me to get a beer understanding of refereeing and

coaching. Once we have finished the course, all of us

coaching boys become qualified rugby coaches.”

Sixth Form News Following outstanding AS results, we are delighted that Mitchell Cox has been

given an offer to study History at Cambridge University. Mitchell is currently

studying Economics, History and Mathema"cs at The Bromfords School and

Sixth Form College. To be offered a place at Cambridge, Mitchell underwent

two rigorous interviews with academics at the University and submi$ed a

range of academic ar"cles he had produced. Congratula"ons Mitchell, we are

all really proud of you.

Having achieved A grades in Economics, Biology, Physics

and Maths, Lauren has been offered a place at the pres"gious Durham

University as well as a scholarship at Imperial College, London to study

Biological Sciences. Congratula"ons Lauren, we are all really proud of you.

Congratula"ons to Jodie Preston who has been offered an

appren"ceship at one of the world’s leading accountancy

firms KPMG. Jodie was one of only 70 students selected

na"onally from thousands of applicants. Jodie will begin

her appren"ceship at Canary Warf where she will have the chance to work

with some of the world’s leading businessmen and businesswomen. Over her 3

or 6 year appren"ceship, Jodie will get to work in Audit, Tax and Advisory areas

of the business. Congratula"ons Jodie, we are really proud of you.

Parent Donates Books to the School Library We would like to say a huge thank you to Charlo$e Thorogood’s mum, who donated an enormous

box of books to the School Library in December. The box included some beau"fully illustrated

Usborne books which will link to our curriculum subjects, as well as a selec"on of fic"on books

which students will be able to use as part of their Accelerated Reading. It was incredibly generous

and very much appreciated.

Media Studies Trip To The

Brish Film Instute On 13

th January, fourteen Year 11 Media

Studies students had the opportunity to

visit the Bri"sh Film Ins"tute on London’s

Southbank for a GCSE Study Day. This day

focussed on the skills and content

required to do well in the exam and gave

the students a number of case studies to

use in order to excel in this year’s topic;

the exci"ng world of Science Fic"on Film!

One of the most interes"ng and engaging

parts of the day was a presenta"on by

William Robertson, a Marke"ng Manager

at Paramount who was responsible for the marke"ng of incredibly successful films such as “Ex

Machina”, “Trainwreck” and the case study film for the aBernoon, “Jurassic World”. His insight into

how films are marketed to specific audiences and how adver"sers use par"cular media forms in

order to engage par"cular groups will contribute directly to students’ prepara"on for the Media

Studies exam in May.
