1 Dear C & I Community— One of the major goals of the Curriculum and Instruction program is to: “Produce scholars who can enhance the knowledge base underlying curriculum and instruction.” Although this goal can be interpreted in many ways, the department is focused and committed to ‘producing scholars’. Scholarship is something that is developed over the course of a career, yet the foundation for engaging in scholarly activities is typically established through mentoring while a student is involved in a degree program. The PhD in C & I program is committed to supporting all of our students in facilitating the development of a scholarly agenda. Each University has its own view of how to define scholar- ship, but at the core of most definitions is the broad notion that research, writing and presentations are involved. At Barry, we define this category as “Scholarship, Professional and/or Creative Achievement” and the faculty handbook stipulates that: “Sustained scholarship, professional and/or creative activity should characterize University faculty members. As scholars, they are responsible to the University and to society to keep informed about advances in knowledge and to contribute to them. They should engage in research and should also publish and/or present their findings. Peer re- viewed publications in professional journals and peer reviewed presentations at professional meetings are considered to be equivalent. Important and valuable scholarly and creative activity may also be expressed in a variety of other ways, including reviewing manuscripts for professional/scholarly journals and for publishers, and recitals, or exhib- its to colleagues within and outside the University. The faculty member may also: 1) engage in research that focuses on pedagogical techniques and other innovations in teaching; 2) produce original approaches to artistic achieve- ments; and/or 3) secure grant monies for the enrichment of the educational program, for research activities, and artis- tic work. Each faculty member is expected to exhibit either creativity or productivity, but, more desirably, a combi- nation of both qualities.” This Spring, we are planning for the Doctoral Student Gathering to highlight scholarship opportunities for our doctoral students. We will celebrate past scholarly accomplishments of our alumni, faculty and current students. In addition, we will invite prospective students to our gathering as we ‘plan’ for the future. We encourage you to ‘save the date’ on your calendar – to join us on Wednesday, April 30 th at 5:30pm for our social and a workshop on developing your CV (Curriculum Vitae). Dear C & I Community—

One of the major goals of the Curriculum and Instruction program is to:

“Produce scholars who can enhance the knowledge base underlying curriculum and instruction.” Although this goal can be

interpreted in many ways, the department is focused and committed to ‘producing scholars’. Scholarship is something that is

developed over the course of a career, yet the foundation for engaging in scholarly activities is typically established through

mentoring while a student is involved in a degree program. The PhD in C & I program is committed to supporting all of our

students in facilitating the development of a scholarly agenda. Each University has its own view of how to define scholar-

ship, but at the core of most definitions is the broad notion that research, writing and presentations are involved. At Barry,

we define this category as “Scholarship, Professional and/or Creative Achievement” and the faculty handbook stipulates that:

“Sustained scholarship, professional and/or creative activity should characterize University faculty members. As

scholars, they are responsible to the University and to society to keep informed about advances in knowledge and to

contribute to them. They should engage in research and should also publish and/or present their findings. Peer re-

viewed publications in professional journals and peer reviewed presentations at professional meetings are considered

to be equivalent. Important and valuable scholarly and creative activity may also be expressed in a variety of other

ways, including reviewing manuscripts for professional/scholarly journals and for publishers, and recitals, or exhib-

its to colleagues within and outside the University. The faculty member may also: 1) engage in research that focuses

on pedagogical techniques and other innovations in teaching; 2) produce original approaches to artistic achieve-

ments; and/or 3) secure grant monies for the enrichment of the educational program, for research activities, and artis-

tic work. Each faculty member is expected to exhibit either creativity or productivity, but, more desirably, a combi-

nation of both qualities.”

This Spring, we are planning for the Doctoral Student Gathering to highlight scholarship opportunities for our doctoral

students. We will celebrate past scholarly accomplishments of our alumni, faculty and current students. In addition, we

will invite prospective students to our gathering as we ‘plan’ for the future. We encourage you to ‘save the date’ on your

calendar – to join us on Wednesday, April 30th at 5:30pm for our social and a workshop on developing your CV

C and I Projects

Visiting Scholar -- Verônica Gesser, EdD From December 2013 to February 2014 we

were privileged to welcome Dr. Veronica Gesser to

the Curriculum and Instruction Department as a vis-

iting scholar from UNIVALI in Brazil. Veronica

Gesser is from Santa Catarina in Brazil. She earned

her BA degree from the Regional University of Blu-

menau in Santa Catarina, Brazil in Pedagogy. She

continued her studies and earned an MS Degree at

São Paulo Catholic University, Brazil in Curriculum

and Supervision. It was while working on her Mas-

ter’s degree that Veronica had the privilege of study-

ing with Paulo Freire. She developed an interest in

the area of curriculum and instruction, specifically

dealing with the impact of public policy. This led her

to pursue her doctoral degree in the United States at

Florida International University in the area of Cur-

riculum and Instruction with a specialization in In-

structional Leadership. Research has been an im-

portant part of her academic life and she is currently

a Full Professor and Vice-Chair of the Graduate

School of Education for both the Master’s and the

PhD Programs at UNIVALI in Brazil.

While at Barry University, Dr. Gesser spent time

with Dr. Gonzalez’s class, as they discussed Paulo

Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. She also visited

with Dr. Marasco’s class to discuss the foundations of

critical pedagogy, and in mid-March she will be a

guest lecturer for Dr. McCrink via Skype in order to

discuss international research issues. We are grateful

to Dr. Gesser for presenting a session at the PDK Re-

search Symposium on February 1st entitled “Global

Perspectives: The Impact of Research on International

Public Policy”. In addition, she was the PDK Closing

Plenary Speaker for the event where she presented

“Critical Theory, Curriculum and Social Justice: Paulo

Freire and Contemporary Issues”.

We look forward to working with Dr. Gesser and

her colleagues from UNIVALI in Brazil in the near

future. Our goal is to create international research op-

portunities and faculty/student exchanges.

SFERA receives

Barry University’s Community-Based Research

Award On March 12, 2014, the South Florida Education

Research Alliance (SFERA) was presented with

Barry University's Center for Community Service

Initiatives Community-Based Research Award. This

award recognizes research teams – composed of stu-

dents, faculty/staff members, and

community partners – for conduct-

ing rigorous research that address-

es community concerns, issues, or

needs. On SFERA work, Drs.

Starratt, Ban, Noelliste, Shure, and

Türegün collaborate with educa-

tion research faculty from Nova

Southeastern University, Florida

Atlantic University, and Florida

International University. ADSOE

students, Stephanie Auguste Shaw,

Ivana Fredotovic, and Sashay

Goodletty, recently presented

study findings at the annual meet-

ing of the Eastern Educational Re-

search Association. Community

partners include Broward County Public Schools,

Children’s Services Council of Broward, and the

Florida Department of Education Commissioner’s

State Task Force on Holocaust Education. SFERA

conducts community-based research (Centre for

CBR, n.d.) within a design-based implementation

research model (Penuel, et al., 2011), consistent

with

Boyer's (1996) tenets of the scholarship of engage-

ment. Building authentic, respectful

relationships with community part-

ners, SFERA collaborates on pro-

jects uniquely relevant community

need, uses data to facilitate im-

proved educational strategies, and

explores opportunities to facilitate

outcomes, policy, and practice. In-

terpretation of findings and genera-

tion of recommendations are a joint

effort of partners. During 2013,

SFERA submitted a USDOE Re-

search-Practitioner Partnerships in

Education Research proposal, with

a budget dedicated mainly to tui-

tion stipends for student research

assistants. The submission, with 17

partners and 6 partner institutions, was the most com-

plex grant proposal ever submitted by Barry’s grants

office.

Phi Delta Kappa International Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) International is an international association of ed-

ucators in K-12 and Higher Education. PDK is founded on three pillars –

service, leadership and research -- which are underpinnings of this organi-

zation’s work. “By providing professional learning opportunities, targeted

networking, and relevant research, PDK helps researchers and practition-

ers deepen their expertise, elevate their careers, and ultimately experience

better results in their work.” (retrieved on March 17, 2014 from http://

Our local Barry University Chapter of PDK was

proud to celebrate our 5th biennial Research Symposium

on February 1, 2014. This daylong event offered an op-

portunity for researchers from South Florida to present

their research projects.

The opening plenary session was presented by Dr.

Ruth Behar entitled, “Crossing Borders in Real Life and

in Writing” where she offered insight into doing ethno-

graphic research into her own Jewish Cuban community.

While Dr. Behar provided examples of her live experi-

ences, she linked her work to her own personal and fam-

ily history. In addition, Dr. Behar offered insight into the

process of writing ethnographic research.

The closing session – presented by Dr. Veronica

Gesser – was equally engaging as she offered insight

into equity in education through the thoughts and

words of Paulo Freire in her talk entitled, “Critical

theory, Curriculum and Social Justice: Paulo Freire

and Contemporary Issues”. This presentation fo-

cused on how the vision of schooling as a liberating

agency what promotes social justice challenges the

current order of curriculum practice.

These two presentations by renowned education

researchers – Drs. Behar and Gesser -- flanked con-

current sessions by local education researchers. Ses-

sions included topics such as community partner-

ships and research done in local schools, experiences

of parents and teachers in special education, collabo-

rative research efforts into Black male achievement,

international student identity, high stakes testing in

third grade and in visual arts and mathematics

and culture.
