Steve Ridgway, Yale Brand Manager said “Yale
will continue to benefi t from the signifi cant
investment made by parent company NMHG
on an annual basis. Th e development of the
company’s people and the dealer network is a
major focus for the company
and goes hand in hand with
that of new products. Th e
result of this is people and
products focused on providing
customers with very practical
solutions to reduce operating
costs, increase productivity
and provide a comfortable
working environment for all
the operators of Yale materials
handling equipment.”
Since commencing its
partnership with Yale, United
Motors & Heavy Equipment
Co. (Darwish Bin Ahmed
Group) has worked tirelessly
to develop the reputation of Yale products
and services in the UAE, and has been able
to demonstrate to a number of businesses
that investment in a Yale materials handling
solution, backed by United Motors (Darwish
Bin Ahmed Group) service and support, will
go a long way to helping them to increase
the productivity and lower the costs of their
operation.
Effi cient Solutions for the Logistics Industry
An example of this success is the contract
that was signed with the EMKE Group in
2010, to supply a fl eet of forklift trucks and

reliability,
productivity and
ease of use of

keeping overall
operating costs
low.”
warehouse equipment to their logistics centre,
located in the industrial city of Abu Dhabi
(ICAD) Musaff ah, which supplies goods to its
“Lulu” hypermarket chain right across the
AGCC Region.
Th e EMKE Group is a major player in the
supply chain industry, from manufacture to
import/export and the wholesale and retail of
consumer products, with various operations
throughout the Gulf, Africa, India and the Far
East. With an annual turnover of $3.75 billion
and ranked as one of the biggest Indian-
owned conglomerates in the Gulf, the group
employs more than 27,000 people.
Th e “Lulu” brand itself, named after the
Arabic word for“pearl”, is today one of the
leading retailers in the Gulf region, operating
84 Hypermarkets and 10 of small format “Lulu
Express” stores across the region, with plans
to reach 100 stores by the end of 2011.
Th e distribution centre is on a 170,000m2
site, consisting of a 100,000m2 warehouse,
with a storage height of 9.0 metres and 90,000
dry pallet locations, featuring adjustable
pallet racking. Th e cold stores consist of an
additional 10,000 convertor pallet locations.
Th e storage capacity of the entire facility is
approximately 100,000 metric tonnes.
Wholesale goods arrive at the centre
in container or by truck in a mostly non-
palletised state. Th ese goods are then re-
palletised on to Lulu’s own specialised plastic
pallets, which are 1.0m x 1.2m in size. Th ey
off er maximum fl exibility when moving
goods around the warehouse and can be
easily cleaned for re-use.
At ‘Goods In’ receiving, 1.5t 3-wheel Yale
electric forklift trucks and 2.0t stand-on Yale
pallet trucks are used to unload the goods.
A scanner based Warehouse Management
System (with display) is employed throughout
the distribution centre to scan each item
on arrival and to identify and direct it to its
storage location. Yale reach trucks are then
used to store the dry goods in the racking,
with perishable items transported directly to
the cold store, until needed for distribution to
the various stores around the region.
When the items need to be picked, Yale 1.0t
mid-level order pickers, with a pick height of
3.2m are fi tted with a roll-cage. Th ese roller
cages have been specially designed by the
EMKE Group to fi t on the forks of the Yale
trucks. Th e roll-cage is initially scanned to
identify the delivery location; the operator
then picks the required items for the order,
according to his packing list, scanning them
as they are picked.
Th e full cages are then taken to the
dispatch/marshalling area, where they are
Yale mid-level order picker features a pick height of 3.2m
loaded on to trucks for distribution to the
various stores. Ninety loading bays with
dock levellers allow the distribution centre
to handle a large quantity and wide variety of
delivery and distribution loads at one time.
EMKE operates a total of 85 Yale trucks in
the distribution centre, 20 per cent of which
feature specialist cold-store kits. Th e trucks
are serviced and maintained by United
Motors (Darwish Bin Ahmed Group).
Th e design and operation of the EMKE
distribution centre is the result of a strong
working relationship which has been
developed with United Motors (Darwish Bin
Ahmed & Sons Group) and Yale Materials
Handling. When the company was looking
for a partner to provide a materials handling
equipment solution, there were a number of
requirements which had to be met, according
to project manager, Mr Abhilash.
“Before selecting a partner, we needed
to ensure that the equipment would be
compatible with our specialised Warehouse
Management System. Furthermore, the
equipment had to operate reliably, delivering
the maximum possible uptime. When the
trucks did have to be maintained or serviced,
the support requested needed to arrive
quickly, to minimise the disruption to the
operation. “Th e fact that United Motors were
able to off er a fi ve year service contract was a
huge advantage, as it also meant that we could
focus on our main business of distribution,
rather than having to worry about managing
our materials handling fl eet.”
It is also clear that the design and capability
of the warehouse equipment helped in
selecting United Motors (Darwish Bin Ahmed
& Sons) and Yale as the supplier, as Mr
Abhilash added that options such as creep
speed, anti-roll back and auto-deceleration
help to make the trucks easy to operate and
minimise the potential of damage to the
trucks, the racking and the goods themselves.
“Furthermore, the drivers are very happy as
the trucks are comfortable and easy to operate,
which in addition to reliable operation helps
to increase productivity. Best of all, however,
is that the effi ciency, reliability, productivity
and ease of use of the trucks all contributed to
keeping overall operating costs low.
“Finally,” concludes Mr Abhilash, “Th e
fact that we have developed a good working
relationship with United Motors (Darwish Bin
Ahmed & Sons), both between management
and also the operators and service personnel
is extremely important. We have faith and
confi dence in our supplier that they will
deliver what they promised, and so far, we are
pleased with the results”.
Mr G. Venkat, general manager of United
Motors (Darwish Bin Ahmed Sons Group)
Materials Handling Division, commented:
“We are extremely pleased that EMKE
provided us with this opportunity to
demonstrate United Motors’ excellent
capability as a provider of the best warehouse
equipment solutions and the success of this
project proves the eff ectiveness and
outstanding capability of the Yale product
off ering across a wide range of applications.”
Mr Steve Ridgway, Yale brand manager said
“Th e success of this project demonstrates
clearly that Yale consistently displays the
attributes for which it stands, and that this is
what the customer can always rely on – People,
Products and Productivity – the importance of
the relationship between customer and
supplier, the capability and eff ectiveness of the
Yale equipment in the application, and most
importantly, the fact that this combination of
committed, professional people and outstanding
products will deliver excellent productivity and
return on investment for our customers”.
