Mule deer, whitetails, sharp-tailedgrouse and prairie chickens are foundthroughout the district, but a hunt in thisarea can mean lots of walking. Wildturkeys inhabit wooded areas wherevercover is adequate. Waterfowl are foundon lakes and ponds throughout the area.

NORTHEASTWaterfowl hunting along the MissouriRiver and its marshy backwaters is someof the best Nebraska has to offer. Thereis good white-tailed deer hunting in thebluffs above the river and in the creekbottoms that slice through the district’sgrasslands and croplands. Wild turkeysare numerous along river bottoms andwherever there is an abundance of timber. Pheasants and bobwhite quailcan be found in most agricultural areas. The Missouri bluffs also support anexcellent squirrel population.

SOUTHEASTThe rolling hills and croplands of southeastern Nebraska have long servedup quality pheasant hunting, but that’snot the whole story. Quail hunters findgreat shooting in some areas, wild turkeysare increasing and waterfowl hunting isgood. And while the number of white-tailed deer has been reduced in recent years, the area still supports a good populationand is home to some big-racked bucks.

TRESPASSINGShooting from the road and

hunting without permission are byfar the most common complaintsreceived by Nebraska Game andParks Commission conservationofficers during fall hunting season.Often the violations go hand inhand. But violators should takenote: If you are caught, you will beprosecuted, and a conviction foreither offense can result in a fineof up to $500, up to 3 months injail, or both, and loss of huntingprivileges for up to 3 years.

Not only is shooting from a roadillegal, it is unsafe. One-eighth ofall hunting-related accidentsreported in Nebraska involve botha gun and a vehicle.

You can help prevent these fewviolators from tarnishing the imageof law-abiding hunters. If you wit-ness any game violation, takenote of any information you can, such as the description of the per-petrators, the type of vehicleinvolved and its license plate num-ber, and immediately call theNebraska Wildlife Crimestoppershotline at 1-800-742-7627. DOVE BANDING AND WING STUDYSAs part of a national study, Commission biologists across the state began

placing bands on mourning doves in the summer of 2003. If you discover aband, please contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service banding office at 1-800-327-BAND (2263) or on the Internet at www.reportband.gov.

Nebraska again is cooperating with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in col-lecting mourning dove wings from hunters. Randomly selected hunters will beasked to save one wing from each dove during the first week of the season andmail the wings (postage free) to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Hunters usingpublic areas may also be asked to provide dove wings on-site as part of themonitoring effort. Data from the wings will be used to estimate annual produc-tivity of the dove population, and eventually used in helping to establish huntingregulations.
