How to use this catalogueCambridge publishes Bibles and prayer books in a variety of styles and bindings, from practical hardback to top-quality calfskin and goatskin. The pages of our leather Bibles have silver, gilt or art-gilt edges and contain one or more ribbon markers.
Some of the Bible versions represented in this catalogue originated in the USA and usually follow American English usage. Where these versions, for example the NRSV and NIV, have an alternative Anglicised text for the British market, those Cambridge editions which use it are flagged BRITISH TEXT.
To make it easy to identify the right Bible, this catalogue is organised first by version, and then by edition.
Features common to all styles in an edition are shown in bullet points at the beginning of each description. Features particular to individual styles are listed in the columns at the side of each page. These columns also show the colour , ISBN (International Standard Book Number) and price . Life-size text samples are included for most editions, to give an accurate representation of clarity and readability. Two figures are given for the typography: the first is the type size and the second is the leading , or space between the lines.

The NRSV is a thorough revision of the original RSV by an ecumenical team of scholars. It is growing in popularity in churches, schools and academia. The translators made full use of contemporary biblical manuscripts, resulting in a clearer understanding of many obscure passages. It uses gender-inclusive language.

The NRSV Anglicized Edition was developed in the United States by an international team of translators, which included some Britons. While words and idioms were carefully chosen to be immediately comprehensible to all English speakers, the original text uses American English (US spelling, punctuation and numbering style). Some churches and schools may find this distracting, preferring British English. Given the high standing of the NRSV in these circles, Cambridge is now offering some Bibles using the NRSV Anglicized Edition.

• an RSV Bible in a quality binding • convenient size• user-friendly concordance
A comprehensive revision of the KJV, the RSV uses formal but understandable language. It uses ‘thees’ and ‘thous’ but only when addressing divinity, and it dispenses with the archaic verb endings of the KJV, such as ‘-eth’ and ‘-edst’ and obsolete words. It is highly regarded as a reliable text for academic use and also lends itself well to private devotions and public worship.

For confirmation of details nearer publication, see our website: www.cambridge.org/bibles.
The English Standard Version is a revision of the RSV, first published in 2001. The forthcoming Cambridge editions announced here use the American spelling conventions of the original ESV.
Two new classicsIn 2008, Cambridge will introduce the ESV to its list of Bibles. This is the latest in a range of Bible versions presented in two classic Cambridge formats.
ESV Pitt Minion Reference EditionThe Pitt Minion is characterized by an elegant, slimline form containing text printed in a compact, yet readable font. The NASB (page 10), NKJV (page 12) and NIV (page 26) have recently come out in this format, and the ESV Pitt Minion Reference Edition will have the same text design and specifications when it is published in Autumn 2008.
ESV Wide-Margin Reference EditionWide-margin Bibles are another Cambridge speciality. The margins provide plenty of space for personal notes, and the Bibles are printed on paper that stands up well to note-taking. The ESV Wide-Margin Reference Edition will be published at the end of 2008 and be comparable to the NASB (page 11) and NKJV (page 13) Wide-Margin Reference Editions. Each of these new wide-margin editions is an enlargement of the Pitt Minion edition, so has exactly the same layout and pagination, with the bonus of a more extensive concordance.

A literal translation from the original texts, well suited to study because of its high level of accuracy to the source texts. It follows the style of the King James Version but words that have fallen out of use or changed their meanings are replaced with modern words. American spelling and punctuation are used. It uses capital letters for pronouns relating to divinity, e.g. ‘there He sat down with His disciples’.

A new edition of the renowned New American Standard Bible, reflecting the best traditions of Cambridge Bible typography and production values.
The original 1930s Pitt Minion Bibles were notable for their use of a compact typeface designed for Cambridge University Press in the heyday of hot-metal composition.
The NASB Pitt Minion Reference Edition now follows in this historic tradition, using a stylish modern digital typeface which, like its predecessor, combines utility and elegance. The result is a classic Bible for the twenty-first century, produced in a remarkably compact yet readable form.

‘Like trying to hold water in my hands ... that’s what my first experience with the Cambridge Wide-margin Reference Bible was like. I expected the goatskin cover to be flexible, but this was ridiculous. Ridiculously good, that is. Wherever it wasn’t supported by my hand, this Bible gracefully plunged toward the floor, almost like it was wet. I half expected it to be dripping, but of course it wasn’t. That’s the illusion a fine, flexible binding can give. It was the best Cambridge binding I’ve ever witnessed, and one of the best Bibles I’ve ever handled, period. ’ J mARk BeRTRANd, AuTHoR ANd LeCTuReR

The History of Creation
1 In the a beginning b God created theheavens and the earth. 2The earth was
c without form, and void; and darkness 1wason the face of the deep. d And the Spirit ofGod was hovering over the face of the wa-ters.
3e Then God said, f “Let there be g light”;and there was light. 4And God saw thelight, that it was good; and God divided thelight from the darkness. 5God called thelight Day, and the h darkness He calledNight. 2So the evening and the morningwere the first day.
6Then God said, i “Let there be a 3firma-ment in the midst of the waters, and let itdivide the waters from the waters.” 7ThusGod made the firmament, j and divided thewaters which were under the firmamentfrom the waters which were k above the fir-mament; and it was so. 8And God called thefirmament Heaven. So the evening and themorning were the second day.
9Then God said, l “Let the waters underthe heavens be gathered together into oneplace, and m let the dry land appear”; and itwas so. 10And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the watersHe called Seas. And God saw that it wasgood.
11Then God said, “Let the earth n bringforth grass, the herb that yields seed, and theo fruit tree that yields fruit according to itskind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”;and it was so. 12And the earth brought forthgrass, the herb that yields seed according toits kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whoseseed is in itself according to its kind. AndGod saw that it was good. 13So the eveningand the morning were the third day.
14Then God said, “Let there be p lights inthe firmament of the heavens to divide theday from the night; and let them be forsigns and q seasons, and for days and years;15and let them be for lights in the firma-ment of the heavens to give light on theearth”; and it was so. 16Then God made twogreat 4lights: the r greater light to rule theday, and the s lesser light to rule the night. He made t the stars also. 17God set them inthe firmament of the u heavens to give lighton the earth, 18and to v rule over the dayand over the night, and to divide the lightfrom the darkness. And God saw that it wasgood. 19So the evening and the morningwere the fourth day.
20Then God said, “Let the waters abound
with an abundance of living 5creatures, andlet birds fly above the earth across the face ofthe 6firmament of the heavens.” 21So w Godcreated great sea creatures and every livingthing that moves, with which the watersabounded, according to their kind, andevery winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22And Godblessed them, saying, x “Be fruitful andmultiply, and fill the waters in the seas, andlet birds multiply on the earth.” 23So theevening and the morning were the fifthday.
24Then God said, “Let the earth bringforth the living creature according to itskind: cattle and creeping thing and beast ofthe earth, each according to its kind”; and itwas so. 25And God made the beast of theearth according to its kind, cattle accordingto its kind, and everything that creeps onthe earth according to its kind. And Godsaw that it was good.
26Then God said, y “Let Us make man inOur image, according to Our likeness; z letthem have dominion over the fish of thesea, over the birds of the air, and over thecattle, over 7all the earth and over everycreeping thing that creeps on the earth.”27So God created man a in His own image; inthe image of God He created him; b maleand female He created them. 28Then Godblessed them, and God said to them, c “Befruitful and multiply; fill the earth andd subdue it; have dominion over the fish ofthe sea, over the birds of the air, and overevery living thing that 8moves on theearth.”
29And God said, “See, I have given youevery herb that yields seed which is on theface of all the earth, and every tree whosefruit yields seed; e to you it shall be for food.30Also, to f every beast of the earth, to everyg bird of the air, and to everything thatcreeps on the earth, in which there is 9life, Ihave given every green herb for food”; and itwas so. 31Then h God saw everything thatHe had made, and indeed it was very good.So the evening and the morning were thesixth day.

The New King James Version was first published in 1982 and is a modernisation of the KJV of 1611. It preserves the KJV’s dignified style and its word and phrase order but replaces some words and expressions that are no longer easily understood. The translators sought ‘to preserve the original intended purity of the King James Version in its communication of God’s Word to man’. American spelling and punctuation are used.

is a God in Israel. 47And all this assembly shall know that the LORD
saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and hewill give you into our hands.’
48And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drewnigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army tomeet the Philistine. 49And David put his hand in his bag, and tookthence a stone, and slung it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to theearth. 50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with astone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no swordin the hand of David. 51Therefore David ran, and stood upon thePhilistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistinessaw their champion was dead, they fled. 52And the men of Israel and ofJudah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou cometo the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of thePhilistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and untoEkron. 53And the children of Israel returned from chasing after thePhilistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54And David took the head ofthe Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour inhis tent.
55And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he saidunto Abner, the captain of the host, ‘Abner, whose son is this youth?’And Abner said, ‘As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell’. 56And the kingsaid, ‘Inquire thou whose son the stripling is’. 57And as David returnedfrom the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought himbefore Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58And Saul saidto him, ‘Whose son art thou, thou young man?’ And David answered, ‘Iam the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite’.
18 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking untoSaul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David,
and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2And Saul took him that day,and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. 3ThenJonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his ownsoul. 4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him,and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to hisbow, and to his girdle.
5And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved him-self wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was acceptedin the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.6And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from theslaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities ofIsrael, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy,and with instruments of music. 7And the women answered oneanother as they played, and said, ‘Saul hath slain his thousands, andDavid his ten thousands’. 8And Saul was very wroth, and the saying dis-pleased him; and he said, ‘They have ascribed unto David ten thou-sands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he

This is an historic setting of the King James Bible, using the classic Pitt Minion format.
Cambridge’s Pitt Bibles were originally launched in the 1930s, in the wake of the typographic revival that took place in England after the First World War. They were notable for their slimness – achieved by using a typeface specially cut by the eminent Times typographer Stanley Morison for Cambridge University Press.
The Pitt Minion Reference Edition was also the first Bible to employ the innovative Cambridge bold-figure cross-reference system.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1 The beginning of the gospel about JesusChrist, the Son of God. a a
2It is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,who will prepare your way” b b—
3 “a voice of one calling in the desert,‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’ ” c c
4And so John d came, baptizing in the desertregion and preaching a baptism of repen-tance e for the forgiveness of sins. f 5Thewhole Judean countryside and all the peopleof Jerusalem went out to him. Confessingtheir sins, they were baptized by him in theJordan River. 6John wore clothing made ofcamel’s hair, with a leather belt around hiswaist, and he ate locusts g and wild honey.7And this was his message: “After me willcome one more powerful than I, the thongsof whose sandals I am not worthy to stoopdown and untie. h 8I baptize you with d wa-ter, but he will baptize you with the HolySpirit.” i
The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth j
in Galilee and was baptized by John in theJordan. 10As Jesus was coming up out of thewater, he saw heaven being torn open andthe Spirit descending on him like a dove. k
11And a voice came from heaven: “You aremy Son, l whom I love; with you I am wellpleased.”
12At once the Spirit sent him out into thedesert, 13and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. m He was with thewild animals, and angels attended him.
The Calling of the First Disciples14After John was put in prison, Jesus went
into Galilee, n proclaiming the good news ofGod. o 15“The time has come,” p he said.“The kingdom of God is near. Repent andbelieve the good news!” q
16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Gali-lee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrewcasting a net into the lake, for they werefishermen. 17“Come, follow me,” Jesus said,“and I will make you fishers of men.” 18Atonce they left their nets and followed him.
19When he had gone a little farther, hesaw James son of Zebedee and his brotherJohn in a boat, preparing their nets. 20With-out delay he called them, and they left their
father Zebedee in the boat with the hiredmen and followed him.
Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit21They went to Capernaum, and when
the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the syna-gogue and began to teach. r 22The peoplewere amazed at his teaching, because hetaught them as one who had authority, notas the teachers of the law. s 23Just then a manin their synagogue who was possessed by anevil e spirit cried out, 24“What do you wantwith us, t Jesus of Nazareth? u Have youcome to destroy us? I know who you are—theHoly One of God!” v
25“Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Comeout of him!” w 26The evil spirit shook theman violently and came out of him with ashriek. x
27The people were all so amazed y thatthey asked each other, “What is this? A newteaching—and with authority! He even givesorders to evil spirits and they obey him.”28News about him spread quickly over thewhole region z of Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many29As soon as they left the synagogue, a
they went with James and John to the homeof Simon and Andrew. 30Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they toldJesus about her. 31So he went to her, took herhand and helped her up. b The fever left herand she began to wait on them.
32That evening after sunset the peoplebrought to Jesus all the sick and demon-pos-sessed. c 33The whole town gathered at thedoor, 34and Jesus healed many who had var-ious diseases. d He also drove out many de-mons, but he would not let the demonsspeak because they knew who he was. e
Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place35Very early in the morning, while it was
still dark, Jesus got up, left the house andwent off to a solitary place, where heprayed. f 36Simon and his companions wentto look for him, 37and when they foundhim, they exclaimed: “Everyone is lookingfor you!”
38Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhereelse—to the nearby villages—so I can preachthere also. That is why I have come.” g 39So he

GoatskinA beautiful and very durable top-quality, natural grain leather. Strong yet supple, it is used for the finest bindings. Traditionally known as ‘Morocco’ leather.
Calfskin leatherA traditional high-quality leather used in fine bindings. It is long-lasting, and its suppleness increases with use. Cambridge calfskin bindings use only top-grain leather.
French Morocco leatherCambridge uses this term for leather taken from a split hide, traditionally sheepskin but now usually calf or cowhide. Slightly thinner than other grades and therefore flexible and soft even when new. A French Morocco binding offers high quality real leather at an economical price.
Berkshire leatherA term for pigskin – the material most commonly used in bookbinding when ‘genuine leather’ is the description used.
Bonded leatherCambridge bonded leather is made from 100% real leather fibres, reconstituted with a strong resin bonding.
Imitation leatherAn attractive cover material with some visual and tactile resemblance to real leather, at a lower price.
Most Cambridge leather-bound Bibles and prayer books have flexible covers. Some of the larger ones – those described as ‘over boards’ – have a sturdy non-flexible binding.
