Girls in Moses Lake need more opportunities and experience with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). We need to give girls more of a chance to become interested in STEM careers, as that’s what the future holds – Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
We can make changes in the future of our girls, by exposing them to STEM. One easy way to do this is First Lego League (FLL), FLL is an international organization that does exactly what our girls need, and it will give them more STEM! Each year there are millions of children ages 9-14 yrs who spend four months focused on using STEM to solve the FLL challenge. For more specifics on FLL please check out firstlegoleague.org or www.FirstWA.org.
We have had a successful FLL team in Moses Lake for the past three years.
The RoboGirls have the following record: 2009 Regional Champions, went to state and placed about17 out of 40 teams. 2010 Regional 1st place in Project Presentation, Eastern WA State 1st in Robot Design. 2011 Regional 2nd Place Overall, Eastern WA State 1st place in Core Values – Inspiration.
Each year the number of girls on the team has increased, which is fabulous, but more girls have expressed an interest in the 2012 season; so we need another team to make this experience possible for more than ten girls. That’s were RoboFire comes in; we want to have the next team! RoboFire will be part of the Camp Fire of North Central Washington. Many of the coaches and mentors for the RoboGirls are willing to help the new team, though we will be looking for more mentors in the community.
Our goals are to find space and funding for the 2012 season. We need space that will allow both teams to work together for the whole season, keeping all equipment safe and secure.
Once we have obtained the space and funding, we will let the girls know that we will have two teams for the 2012 season! Both teams expect to start the 2012 season September 1st at the latest; however the hope is if space and funding are secure to start earlier (June 1st!)So that some pre-season field trips and planning can happen. All activities and experiences give each girl more STEM; from the research project to the robot design and troubleshooting the girls get a vast, fast paced STEM workout!
Simply this project will be a success by the simple fact that more girls will have this opportunity; however, in the long run effects of this will show in the girl’s teamwork, school success and self-esteem. Some would measure how well the team does at competition; however, we feel that just participating is its own reward.
How can you help? At this point in time, grants and other requests are being written and requested. Your organization could donate funds, offer to provide a large secure room for the season or provide good and services needed for our success.
Sponsors will be recognized by their name or logo on the back of the team’s shirts that are worn during competitions and demonstrations. Sponsors can also ask the team to give a demonstration at a meeting or other function. (This is best after the season is over in Jan).
The RoboFire team expresses to you, in advance, their appreciation of your organization’s support and assistance.
