General News Notes. (cont.)

The first newspaper established in Evanston was in 1871, by W. L. Vaughn, called the “Evanston Age.” We present elsewhere a page of illustrations of our Evanston churches which in itself speaks volumes for the good work being done here in the cause of reli-gion. These churches are all in flourishing condition and presided over by worth and influential pastors. The County Court House at Evanston was built in 1874 at a cost of $15,425, and the present jail was built in 1887 at a cost of $10,000.

Our thanks are due to Mayor Baker for the many courtesies ex-tended in supplying photos for this work and for important data furnished. The City of Evanston received its name from an assis-tant engineer in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad, by the name of Evans. Evanston Public school building was erected in 1885 at a cost of $21,000. Since then the addition of steam heating apparatus and other improvements brings the entire cost up to $30,000.

The firm of Snyder & Painter, proprietors of Palace Saloon, is com-posed of George Snyder and Tom Painter who have been doing business under the above firm name since 1886. -Sarcasm is banned in North Korea. In August of 2016, offi-

cials repeatedly warned all citizens that they are strictly for-

bidden from making sarcastic comments about the coun-

try’s leadership, and that ‘hostile actions’ would be taken to

correct such behavior.

-Psycho was the first movie to ever show a toilet on screen.

Before Hitchcock sneaked one into the infamous shower

scene, toilets were censored and had not been seen in film

or television.

-The White House didn’t officially celebrate July 4th until

1801. Thomas Jefferson opened the ‘President’s House,’ as

it was called at the time, to all people. He also invited diplo-

mats, officers, and Cherokee chiefs, and had live music,

horse races, and cockfights for entertainment.

-People used Old Faithful as a washing machine during the

1800s. In the earliest days of Yellowstone National Park,

people would put their laundry inside the geyser while it

was dormant, and it would erupt with clean clothes.

- Doctors didn’t wear white coats until the late 1800s. Be-

cause medicine was quickly advancing, the public thought

discoveries of new antiseptics and the spreading of disease

were just mysticism and deceit. In response, doctors

ditched their formal black waistcoats and adopted the

white lab coats scientists wore in order to be taken more

seriously.
