The language of knitting can be confusing but abbreviations and symbols can save space and make knitting patterns easier to read (really!). Here are some of the most common abbreviations and symbols. Note - these are the main abbreviations and symbols but not all of them.

Pick up the horizontal loop between sts, place it onto the left needle, knit into the back

Cast on - how you begin each piece of knitting.

Bind off - sometimes called casting off, and is the way you finish most knitted pieces.

Increase - made by working in the front, and again in the back, of the same stitch.

Decrease - take out one or more stitches. Do this is by working two stitches together.
