Caps became fashionable once again during theearly years of this period and they were similarin style to the bonnets then being worn. Theywere usually made of lace or net with a long ovalcrown and a raised front supported by a lightwire frame. The elaborate trimmings were of laceor ribbon (Fig. 278). For informal wear the lowheavy chignon of hair was often enclosed in abag-like net. The one in Fig. 276 was describedas "a headdress of light blue chenille with a blue

Although hats were not considered sufficientlyrespectable for church wear and very formaloccasions they were gradually taking the placeof bonnets, at least for younger women.
The low crowned hats with dipping brims andthe pork pie hats were at first the main types, butsoon a large variety of shapes was being worn.Among the most popular were styles with brimscurving down at front and back and either curv-ing up or turned up at the sides. The crowns
