FRIDAY 28 DECEMBER

On your arrival in London you will be taken by motor coach to your hotel. There may be a short delay before you have access to your room and so we will schedule lunch and a walk of the local area.

Your tour assistant will inform you of the time and place for an orientation meeting, where you will learn all about your week in London.

At this meeting, you will receive your special LNYDP souvenir drawstring bag containing all of the items you need to make the most of your exciting week ahead. This includes;

Your pocket sized itinerary book which you will carry with you all week. Not only does it contain this detailed daily schedule, it also has maps and directions for your walking tours as well as a useful information section. Check out the apps!

An LNYDP wallet containing your hotel information card, to keep

with you at all times in case of an emergency, as well as your very own Visitor Oyster Card, which allows you to travel on London’s underground and bus network.

Your MP3 player, loaded with four unique self-guided walking tours of London that are an integral part of your itinerary this week. Please check that your player is fully charged. It may need a top up before you start your first walk.

A fold out LNYDP street map of London with a bus and underground section to help you plan your days activities.

The 2019 LNYDP Participant Guide with information to help you prepare for parade day.

At the earliest opportunity, make your way to Vauxhall, your nearest underground station and board the Victoria Line train to Green Park station.

As you emerge you will be adjacent to the Ritz Hotel, the starting point for the first of your audio walks, the Parade Route.

3

This will take you along the spectacular processional route of London’s New Year’s Day Parade, through the heart of Westminster. It features The Ritz Hotel, Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Square. Learn about the rich history of the area and the buildings along the route, with the added flavour of the pomp and ceremony of the parade.

Return by underground to your hotel.

7.00pm Dinner will be served in the Plaza Suite on level -4 in your hotel.

The rest of the evening is free for you to acclimatise to European time.

SATURDAY 29 DECEMBER

A substantial buffet breakfast will be served each morning in the Plaza Suite on level -4 of your hotel at the time indicated in your daily itinerary.

From 6.30am Breakfast is served.

8.00am Meet your Blue Badge guide and board your motor coach for today’s tour.

8.15am Depart for Westminster Pier.

4

9.00am Board a Thames River boat for the 50 minute cruise to Greenwich. Your guides will provide historical commentary en-route.

Greenwich, in south-east London, is famous the world over as the home of time (Greenwich Mean Time) and because Zero Longitude, the point where the Eastern & Western hemispheres meet, runs through the town.

Today you will visit the Royal Observatory, the oldest scientific institution in Britain and home to some of the most important timepieces ever made.

There may also be time to visit the Royal Naval College, one of the finest palatial buildings in the country and home to the largest maritime museum in the world and wander through the historic part of the town.

12.30pm Depart Greenwich by motor coach.

1.00pm Your tour ends at the Tower of London, where you may

find an independent lunch at one of a number of eateries in the area.

2.00pm Re-join your Blue Badge guide for a tour of The Tower.

The ancient stones reverberate with dark secrets, priceless jewels glint in fortified vaults and ravens strut the grounds. The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror in 1066, holds some of the most remarkable stories from across the centuries. Despite a grim reputation as a place of torture and death, this powerful and enduring fortress has been enjoyed as a royal palace, served as an armoury and for a number of years even housed a zoo!

Gaze up at the massive White Tower, tiptoe through a kings’ medieval bedchamber and marvel at the priceless Crown Jewels. The famous Yeoman Warders have bloody tales to tell; stand where heads rolled and prisoners wept.

5

The Tower held many famous prisoners from the highest levels of society; some in astonishing comfort and others less so… visit the places of their confinement and read the graffiti left by prisoners from over 500 years ago.

At the end of your visit you will walk up to Tower Hill Station on the Circle and District Lines and, using your Oyster Card, journey back in to the West End.

Dinner at leisure.

This evening you may choose where you would like to dine using the vouchers provided. We have created a booklet listing the most popular restaurant brands that accept the vouchers and their location with map reference, or you can use our interactive Google map at https://lnydp.com/parade/.

There will be a couple of stops for photographs.

7

12.00pm Tour ends in Waterloo Place, adjacent to Trafalgar Square, where you will prepare for your performance.

Trafalgar Square is one of London’s great landmarks. It is named after the most famous sea battle in British history when in 1805 twenty-seven British ships of the line, led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory, defeated thirty-three French and Spanish ships of the line under French Admiral Pierre Villeneuve off the south-west coast of Spain, at Cape Trafalgar. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost twenty-two ships, without a single British vessel being lost. Nelson was shot during the engagement and died only after the battle was won. He now looks down on you from his column that is 185 feet above your head.

12.15pm The event stewards will lead you to the area where you will line up in preparation for your performance.

12.45pm Performance begins.

1.00pm Performance ends. Return to Waterloo Place and board your motor coach and return to your hotel.

LONDON USEFUL INFORMATION

Time zone: GMT

Language: English

Temperature: the average temperature in December and January remains a constant at 5-6°C.

Currency: Pound (£) There are 100 pence in a £.

Pound coins: £1, £2

Pence coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50

Pound notes: £5, £10, £20, £50

Credit cards: Visa, MasterCard and American Express are all widely accepted in London.

Money exchange: the easiest way of obtaining £ is from ATM machines located all across London. Money can also be exchanged at the ICE (International Currency Exchange) and Thomas Exchange Global branches located throughout London.

Tipping: it is customary to leave 10-15% of the bill when eating out in restaurants. However, restaurants often add on a service charge (usually 12.5%), so it’s worth checking your bill if you don’t want to tip twice. Rounding

28

up on taxi fares/restaurant bills is appreciated. For example if the bill was £18.60, leave £20.00.

Public transport

Bus: make sure that when you’re on the bus that you push one of the buttons to alert the driver you wish to get off at the next stop.

When waiting at a bus stop and you see your bus coming make sure you stick your arm out straight towards the road (careful not to get in the way of traffic) to signal the bus driver that you want them to stop.

Train: the tube network is very busy during ‘rush hour’ with commuters moving around the city. You can expect the trains and stations to be crowded between 7:30am and 9:30am and between 5:00pm and 7:00pm in the evening. If you are travelling during these times make sure you are aware of other passengers on the train, if you are carrying a big bag then placing it at your feet is a good way to make space.

Clothes and shoes: Coats, scarves, hats, gloves and warm jumpers are a good idea. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as there will be a lot of walking through central London and a waterproof coat is also recommended.

Electricity: UK power sockets deliver an average voltage of 230V, although in practice this can be slightly higher. To charge devices that are compatible with this voltage, simply buy the appropriate adapter from the airport or from high street shops such as Argos. Electricity type A, British 3-pin.

Cockney London

A true Cockney is someone born within the sound of Bow Bells, rung from St Mary-le-Bow Church in Cheapside, East London.

Cockney rhyming slang is a humorous slang, first used by cockneys in the east end of London. It was invented in the 1840s by market traders, costermongers (sellers of fruit and vegetables from handcarts)

29

and street hawkers. It was probably first used as a cant – a language designed to disguise what was being said from passers-by.

Today, cockney rhyming slang phrases have entered the British lexicon, and many are still used in London and indeed all around Britain.

Here are a few examples:

Baked Bean Queen

Bees & honey Money

Butcher’s Hook Look

Rabbit & Pork Talk

Dog & Bone Phone

Ball & Chalk Walk

Bubble Bath Laugh

China Plate Mate (Buddy)

Frog & Toad Road

Mork & Mindy Windy

Oxford Scholar Dollar

Trouble & Strife Wife

Fat Boy Slim Gym

Wi-Fi: is common in cafes and restaurants, connection speeds can vary.
