THE UNIVERSITY OF NASHVILLE wAS founded by the State of North Carolina, through Gen. James Robert-

son, in 1784. Tennessee was then a part of North Carolina, and what

ever endowment the Institution enjoyed, it owed to the munificence of that

State. The Medical Department was founded in 1850, by the late President,

Philip Lindsley, who had devoted his life and great learning, since 1824, to

the development and fame of the University. His agents and co-workers in

founding the Department of Medicine were, John M. Watson, Vv. K. Bowling,

A. H. Buchanan, Rob,ert M. Porter, C. K. Winston, and J. Berrien Lindsley.

The first announcement of the Medical Department went forth to the public

with these six names alone, and colleagues afterward added owed their places

exclusively to them, for, by an arrangement with the Trustees, all power bear

ing upon the department was ceded to them for a period of twenty-two years;

for they believed, and their successors still believe, that medical men can man

age their own affairs best when subject to no control of non-medical men, who,

. knowing nothing of medical matters, become tools in the bauds of unscrupu-

lous medical men for purposes of mischief.

In July, 1867, the- Montgomery Bell Academy, an endowed Classical School,

W!IS organized within the University, and is already in a flourishing condition.

The Scientific and Literary Departments, though temporarily suspended by

civil troubles, are rooted in vigorous soil, and will again appear above the sur

face, possibly refreshed and energized by a period of repose.

This Institution has never been under the control or support of State or Church,

while it has rendered valuable and acknowledged services to both. It reposes on

a foundation that secures its perpetuity, and though mainly dependent upon tui

tion fees for its support, has never turned from the door of any department a

studious and ambitious young man because he was poor, but has always wel

comed him to its altars, and cherished his fame as a jewel among her pos

seS'Sions.

NASHVILLE

JOURNAL OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY I

THE leading object of this Journal is to benefit the laborious country practitioner. 'ro collect from all sources whatever in the judgment of the Editor

will lighten the labors, and increase the success and usefulness of the great HIGH PRIVATES of the profession, and while by no means neglecting the science, its highest efforts will be devoted to the PRACTICE OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY.

As without observance of etiquette no social, scientific, or professional organization can exist, to promote harmony, respect, and confidence between practitioners, Medical Ethics will at all times claim a due share of attention. It will encourage organizations of Medical Societies, and enrich its pages with their proceedings. It will encoura~~:e the oft-neglected duty of recording Medical observations, and the Editor will publish with great pleasure, from any of his readers, facts and observations upon any branch of l'.Iedicine that he may deem valuable to all. He politely asks his readers to write for the pages of his J ournal short articles of pith and point. This age is charged with a higher duty, in our progresEJive profes.sion, thltn the reproduction of the notions ltnd sayings of the deltd Medical past. None now "has time, an hour's time, to sit upon a bank and hear the cymbal tinkle in white hands."

'l'he Editor will have before him the leading journals of Germany, Fmnce, Great Britain, Italy, ltnd Spain, with the no less valuable journals of his own country, and every thing useful to practitioners in them, in a condensed form, and in good English, shall gmce the pages of his own.

Reviews and notices of forei~ and American Medical books, as they appear, will form a valuable feature of the Journal.

No school of Medicine, or its politicians, no Medical clique or party, shall pretend to exert any influence whlttever upon the course or character of this Journal. Clearly independent of these, and determined to keep so, the Editor ltDd Proprietor looks alone to God, the profession, his paying subscribers, and himself, for sympathy and guidance.

It is well known to the American Medical profession, that this Journal, during the decade from 1851 to 1861, enjoyed a widely extended patronage. He who was its supreme guide then is still alone responsible for its mltnagement. That it contained the elements of usofulneSli then, its successful prosperity was sufficient evidence. Its present struggle will be to regain its former elevation by the same line of advancement, enlightened by the past.

Hereafter the Journal will be published in numbers of FORTY-EIGBT pages monthly, at three dollars a year, to be always paid in advance. Journal will always stop with the pay.
