Important Information for Buyers
All lots are offered subject to Morton & Eden Ltd.’s Conditions of Business and to reserves.
Estimates are published as a guide only and are subject to review. The actual hammer price of a lot may well be higher or lower than the range of figures given and there are no fixed “starting prices”.
A Buyer’s Premium of 15% is applicable to all lots in this sale. Excepting lots sold under ‘Temporary Import’ rules which are marked with the symbol ‡ (see below), the Buyer’s Premium is subject to VAT at the standard rate (currently 17½%). Lots are offered for sale under the auctioneer’s margin scheme and VAT on the Buyer’s Premium is payable by all buyers.
Lots marked with the symbol ‡ have been imported from outside the European Union (EU) to be sold at auction under Temporary Importation Rules. When released to buyers within the EU, including the UK, the buyer will become the importer and must pay import VAT at the rate of 5% on both the hammer price and the Buyer’s Premium. In effect this means that the invoice total for most EU buyers, including the Buyer’s Premium, will be at the level of the hammer price + 20.75% (i.e just over 3% higher than the rate of 17.625% which typically applies to lots sold under the domestic Auctioneer’s Margin VAT scheme). Buyers outside the EU will not be required to pay temporary import VAT provided that satisfactory documentary evidence of exportation is obtained. Further information on this matter is available on request.
Morton & Eden Ltd. will be pleased to execute bids on behalf of those clients unable to attend the sale in person, subject to our Conditions of Business. All bids must be submitted in writing in good time and lots will always be purchased as cheaply as possible (depending on any other bids received, reserves and competition in the saleroom). This service is offered free of charge.
Morton & Eden Ltd. can supply quotations for the shipping of purchases, including transit insurance and VAT refund administration fees, and will assist in the application for any export licences which may be required. Buyers are reminded that it is their responsibility to comply with UK export regulations and with any local import requirements.
Payment Instructions
Payment is due in sterling at the conclusion of the sale and before purchases can be released. Please note that we require seven days to clear sterling cheques unless special arrangements have been made in advance of the sale. We are pleased to accept major credit cards, for which a surcharge will be made of 3% of the transaction total. There is no charge for payments made by debit card.

This issue must be associated with the two silver coins listed by Bellinger (A123 and A124 – Paris and Oxford respectively), in particular the latter which bears the same ethnic and symbol below the horse. Bellinger called them hemidrachms but their weights (2.35 and 2.41 g.) show them to be Persian half-sigloi. The Zanj were slaves who originally came from East Africa (their name survives in the name Zanzibar). They worked in appalling conditions in the marshlands in southern Iraq, clearing salt from agricultural land. They staged a revolt against the caliph in 254h and made a series of raids into Khuzistan, culminating in the capture of Basra and massacre of its inhabitants in 257h. It took years of hard campaigning before the rebellion was finally crushed by al-Mufawwaq, the caliph’s brother, in 270h.
Madinat al-Mukhtara (‘The Elect City’) was the Zanj capital, located some way south of Basra. Its location is now uncertain after it was comprehensively destroyed by al-Muwaffaq.
