Ancient Greek Olympics
The first Olympics were held in 776bc.
They held chariot races and
running races.
The statue of Zeus is thirteen metres high and covered with ivory and gold. They put it there to honour Zeus.
It would have been very hot and overcrowded, and the water supply was poor.
Pankration wrestling was an event held on the 4th day.
History of the modern Olympics
The ancient Greek Olympics grew and continued to be played every four years for
nearly 1200 years. A roman emperor abolished the games because of their pagan
influences. A Pagan influence is when someone doesn't believe in something.1500
years later a French man began their revival.
Beijing 2008
This year Beijing in China held the Olympics. Lots of athletes attended the Olympics. Michael Phelps won
eight gold medals in Swimming.
Paralympics
The Paralympics are like the Olympics but for people that have disabilities.
