A Very Rare and Attractively Toned Stater of Olympia

Eagle flying right, its wings above and below its body, grasping a hare by the belly with its talons and tearing at it with its beak, small countermark in field, rev F-A, thunderbolt, with wings above and volutes below, 11.93g., 11h (Seltman -, dies AK/αξ; BCD 31 var.). A very rare die combination, not recorded by Seltman or included in the BCD collection, attractive cabinet tone, a few light marks in obverse field, very fine to good very fine. £5,950

An Exceptional Drachm of Olympia

AG038 Elis, Olympia (c. 245/240-210 B.C.), Silver Drachm. Eagle, its wings raised, flying right, grasping a hare with its talons and tearing at it with its beak, rev F-A, thunderbolt, with wings below and double volutes above, 4.78g., 6h (BCD 238 (these dies); W. Schwabacher, ‘A Hoard of Drachms of Elis’, NC 1939, Group II, 11). Well-struck on a broad flan of very good metal, light iridescent toning, extremely fine and exceptional. £2,950 ex Grove Collection, Superior, 11 June 1986, lot 1102

A Rare Stater of Rhaukos

AG040 Aegean Islands, The Cyclades, Keos, Ioulis (c. 515-490/480 B.C.), Silver Obol. Bunch of grapes, rev quadripartite incuse square, 0.88g. (cf. Sheedy, pp. 27-8, pl. 20, 1-2; SNG Copenhagen 646). Toned, good very fine and rare. £775 These enigmatic obols, which depict the grape-bunch as their obverse type, are presently attributed to Ioulis as they have been associated by scholars with the staters and obols, given to this mint, which have both the grapes and a dolphin on their obverse. However, Sheedy has pointed out that some caution must be taken in this approach, due to the above issue bearing just one of the symbols, and there being some difference between the two on stylistic grounds.

An Attractive Cycladic Drachm from Paros

AG042 Aiolis, Myrina (c. 155-145 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm. Stephanophoric type. Laureate head of Apollo facing right, rev MYPINAIΩN, Apollo Grynios standing right, holding a branch and a philae, a monogram on left, omphalos and an amphora at his feet; all within a laurel-wreath, 16.47g., 12h (Sacks, ANSMN 30, 1985, Issue 27; de Luynes 2533). Laureate head of Zeus facing right, rev ANTIOXEΩN EΠI OYAPOY, Tyche seated right on rocks, holding a palm-branch, at her feet the figure of the river-god Orontes swims to right, date EK on right, 7.69g., 12h (RPC 4242; BMC 57; McAlee 85). Dark brown patina with earthen deposits, good fine. £625 Publius Quinctilius Varus served as a general under Augustus, having previously held the consulship with the future emperor Tiberius in 13 B.C. He was governor of Syria from 7-4 B.C., during which time this coin was issued, but he is most remembered for the disaster in the Teutoburg forest that occured during his governorship of Germania subsequent to this. An attempt to advance further into Germania resulted in the XVII, XVIII and XIX Roman legions being ambushed by the Cherusci. The legions were completely annihilated and when Augustus heard of the disaster, Suetonius reports that he was seen to be wandering the imperial palace on the Palatine Hill hitting his head against the walls and shouting, “Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions.”

An Extremely Rare Trachy, Commemorating the Coronation of John II

In addition to Alexius I, the empress Irene Ducaena and infant John II are depicted. This type was surely meant to mark the coronation of the latter.

An Exceptional Byzantine Lead Seal

Facing bust of St. Christopher, crowned and holding a sceptre, XR-OR either side, rev ROMAhO / XRISTOFOR / CE COhSTAh / Eh XW EVSE / S RASIL / •••, 32.20g., 12h (Zacos -; DO -; Seyrig -). An important seal in an exceptional state of preservation. £850 Romanus made his son Christopher co-emperor in A.D. 921. The legend shows his elevated status which, surprisingly, precedes that of the legitimate emperor Constantine VII.
