SOLs: VA SOL 3.1 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct and representative democracy), and sports.Big Question:What ideas/inventions started in ancient Greece are we still using today?RecapWelcome back to ancient Greece. You will notice you are still in your city-states. Today we are going to look at the contributions of the Greeks. Is there anything they created we still use today?RememberVoting- an expression of choice Election- choosing a person(s) to an office by votingDemocracy- a government by the people where the supreme power is in the people

Today, the whole class is going to vote on a new class rule. The rule is all the girls in the class have to wear a pony tail on Wednesdays and Fridays.

DirectThe principal wants to know who is the funniest in each classroom. The person with the most votes will represent the classroom. Choose wisely! Who is the funniest.. Johnny or Mikey

RepresentativeMaybe change this to best TV show: Star Wars: the Clone Wars, iCarly, or House of Anubis with real 3rd graders but say for relevancy with this particular class we do Once Upon a Time, American Idol, and the Bachelor

With the TV show how would that be representative? If you have another idea to word it let me know I could not think of anything, so I just reworded this to make a little more sense. 8Two types of DemocracyDirect DemocracyA government in which people vote to make their own rules and laws

Representative DemocracyA government in which the people vote for (elect) a smaller group of citizens make the rules and laws for everyone

Make sure we define terms: democracy, elect, and hit home on the difference between the two. Could say remember, we learned that democracy is this 9Whats up with that? What do you think of the two types of democracy? How did you feel when it was your representative talking, not you?Do you know any governments like this today? What type do they use?Which would take longer to make a decision?

I added this in as ideas for questioning. We can take it out and just verbally ask some of these questions.10What else?So the Greeks invented democracy. Did they make any other contributions? Greek Columns!

DoricPlainThere is no base Examples: Parthenon in Athens, which is probably the most famous and most studied building on Earth. Buildings built even now borrow some parts of the Doric order.

IonicFamous for its scrolls on either sideTaller than Doric columns with skinnier shaftsLarge basesMore fancy than DoricFound in churches and many special buildings still today

CorinthianVery fancy!Sometimes has flowers or scrolls in the capitalHas a skinny shaft and large baseThe roof of a Corinthian column is flat, unlike Doric and Ionic

Columns Today?Find That Column!

CORINTHIAN!Columns Today?Find That Column!

IONIC!DORIC!It is happening this summer in London and it happened 4 years ago in BeijingWhat else?So the Greeks invented democracy and columns. What else did they do? Hint please! The Olympics!

The Greeks invented the Olympic games. The first recorded games were played in 776 BC (thats almost 3,000 years ago!)They went on until 393 AD (1,000 years later) Sports were foot races, boxing, chariot races and jumping. The games were a time of peace, even during war a truce would be called so all City-States could participate.Part of a festival that honored Zeus, we still do some of the events in our modern Olympics, which werent started again until 1896.19Now what? Were going to have our own academic Olympics! Get ready to work as a team to answer the questions.
