George Franklin Wolfe 1812-1885had several children two of whom wereMila "Milly" Wolfe 1838-andManson Elijah Wolfe 1842-1917 Manson Elijah Wolfe had a daughternamed Nancy E. Wolfe 1877-1960who married Benjamin Priest Moore 1865-1937Two of their daughters wereMary Bernice 1913-2006andJuanita R 1915-2008 After their husbands died they lived together west of White Rock Lakebefore you get to Highway 75. These two women were the daughters ofJames Wolfe's first cousin=Nancy E. Wolfe Moore. He was their secondcousin and they all lived around each other in or near Grayson, Collinand Denton Counties. Ernest Smith, who is our 9th cousin via Manson Wolfe and has beenresearching the family since the 1960s, spoke and met with them severaltimes and they said the following. The three thatwere still alive were from her marriage to Nathan Perry Dalton. Allchildren with Adam Wolfe, Jr.-including James A Wolfe-were dead. Smithfrom Ancestory.com Wolfe history written in the 1890's and oral family history lists thechildren of Jane and George Franklin Wolfe as: Emanuel, Gideon, Mila, Manson, Wiley, and Jeptha. Manson Wolfe'sdaughter, Nancy Elizabeth bares witness that this is the complete andonly list of the children of Jane and George Franklin Wolfe. Others have added these extra children to the family of George FranklinWolfe: Mariah, Nancy, Lily, James, George W. and Thomas G. Mariah, Lily, and Nancy: A close look at the original 1850 Census will reveal the mistake of thetranscriber of the names Emanuel and Wiley as Mariah and Lily.Manson is also misnamed as Nancy in the 1850 census; this explainshim missing in the 1850 census, and Nancy missing in the other census. James: James Wolfe is in the 1870 census of Hancock County with the family ofGeorge F. Wolfe. Some individuals have him as George F.'s son.However known family history does not list him as such. Wolfe are the sons of Gideon Wolfe and thegrandsons of George Franklin Wolfe. ===================================================================SPECULATIONS and Aunt Lizzie Dictations=================================================================== Could Roland be his father's last name rather than his middle name.Census has him as James W Wolf, James Wolf, Jim Wolf, James Wolfe1910 Census show him living in Tennessee.1920 Census show him living in Van Alstyne, TX There seem to be three possibilities about "our" James Wolfe1. Wolfe was his step-father's name or2. Wolfe was his mother's maiden name or3. Coffee was his mother's maiden nameWe are not sure which story is the correct one. Number 1 is the mostprobablefrom the Aunt Lizzie set of papers found in her trunk after her death. Butit is also possible that this Wolfe who "took him in" was actually hisgrandfatherGeorge Franklin Wolfe who was caring for him as a grandson rather thanas a son.In other words 1. would be a Wolfe who took him in but not a step-father. Thisalso would match with the Aunt Lizzie papers. Another way at looking at "our " James Wolfe isin above number 1. his father is Coffeein above number 2. his father is Coffeein above number 3. his father is Unknown Name Grandpa Wolfe-James Roland Wolfe?-only child at that time out ofwedlock. The man wouldn't mary the mother. (Other story says he diedon the job of delivering mail). She had two daughter. (Were they bornbefore or after James Wolfe?). Our name should have been Coffee. The following sounds too muck like the story about his wife and sister-in-law.In this version it's about his two sisters, one of whom just happens tohave the same name as his sister-in-law, and just happens to also marrya Holt. I suspect that this story is also about his wife and sister-in-law. James Wolfe-his mother and father were fishing. A boat came by andthey gave his two sisters (or are they half-sisterss) away. One wasnamed Betty. The other name is unknown. Betty Holt got back with thefamily. James Wolfe was born out of wedlock. His mother was a Coffee.




She married a man named Wolfe and he took the Wolfe name. According to Alice Stewart his birthyear is 1858. According to JudithWolfe his birthyear is 1855-1857. According to Joyce Lay his birthyearis 1855. If one looks at the 1900 U.S. Census one sees that he is 42 yearsold. It also shows that 1854 was written as birth year but then the 4 wasoverwritten with an 8 making the birthyear 1858. His death certificategiven by his son George shows his birthyear to be 1858 also. Coffee can also be spelled Coffie or Coffey. It seems that there may have been three James Wolfes. Adam Jr andRebecca Coffee had one born in 1854+-. Claiborne Greenberry Wolfeand Hannah Malicoat had one born in 1857+-. And then there was theJames Wolfe that stayed with George Franklin Wolfe who was born 1854+-. It is possible that this is Miley Wolfe's son. It is also possible that itis one of the other Jameses-such as Claiborne Wolfe's son. In 1870census there was a James Wolfe born +- 1854 staying with Mary Wolfeor William Wolfe. This James may be Claiborne Wolfe's son since he isthe only son missing from multi-widow Hannah Malicoat WolfeDawson's family as per 1870 census. It is another possiblility that thereare only two James Wolfes. Adam's son and "the other" James Wolfe.Which one is our James Wolfe is hard to tell. If we could trust census info I would bank on the Claiborne Wolfechoice because the age is a closer fit. But there is a lot of evidenceindicating that the James Wolfe staying with Claiborne was really MilaWolfe's son and was just visiting. Adam Wolfe, Jr. does have a Coffey connection via his wife. Rebecca.but is it the right connection and do either of his other two childrenhave "hidden" Coffey connections--not likely. And such connectionswould be required to match what we think Aunt Lizzie was saying. =================================================As I said in the beginning. General Notes: 1900 Census puts her in Grainger County, TN1910 Census puts her in Hazelwood, Webster, Missouri which is about 50mileseast of Springfield, MO and SW of St. Louis Her first name is spelled Mila, Miley, Milly and last name Wolfe and Wolf Another argument-which is biological-for her being James Wolfe's motheris that her first child with her husband, William Marion Coffee, occuredwhen she was 35 years. Even now the chances of having a first child at orover 35 are greatly reduced. If James was her first child, the child born toher when she was 35 would be her second and this is biologicall morelikely---especially in the 19th century without medical intervention.

The murderer was captured and hanged, but John became sofrightened, that he left his wife while she was pregnant with their firstchild Henry, and fled to Georgia and South Carolina. John was gone forabout a year and a half before he returned. Upon his return, heimmediately took Catherine and his young son Henry to North Carolina.In the spring of 1788, the family moved to a farm on the south side of theNorth Fork of the Holston River. Even though they were extremely poor,John managed to buy the 50 acres on which he was living. The purchasewas made on Dec. 06, 1790, from John Kearns. Six years later on Nov. 14,1796, John purchased an additional 150 acres from Dennis Coudry. Thisfarm was located at the junction of the river with the Tennessee state lineabout four miles from Gate City. John Wolfe was a strict, hardworking,and careful farmer, and by 1806, he had accumulated a sizeable estateworth about $3,000.00. He also peddled whiskey in the Clinch Riversettlements, and may have traded horses in Kentucky. As the yearspassed John's mental condition deteriorated. He became increasinglydepressed from the emotional pressure he felt from the murder incidentyears before. He would feel these bouts of depression coming on, andwould warn his family to stay away from him. As John's emotional stateworsened, he became increasingly violent. He progressed from quarreling,to threats of physical violence upon his family. As family life became




more difficult, Catherine sent Hannah to live with her Aunt Mary Pope,and Adam to live with his Uncle Charles Wolfe in Tennessee. Shortlyafterwards, John sold his farm and took his youngest son, Jacob, to theMoravian settlement near Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After aboutone year had lapsed, John returned home. John's mental condition gotcontinually worse, and about a year after returning home, he then movedinto the home of Jacob Peters where he lived for about 2 years. The propertyconsisted of three tracts of land amounting to 600 acres. In the Wolfe vs.Wolfe case, it was determined that the land was worth $3000 exclusive ofthe slaves which were valued at $1500. The slaves were a man, his wifeand 2 daughters. After the sale, he went to live with the Moravians in NC.Henry and John threatened to take Weaver to court, and he agreed to sellthe land to them for $900, but he kept the slaves. On 10/17/1816, the otherchildren initiated the Superior Court of Chancery case in Wytheville, VA.The Wolfe vs. Wolfe case was not settled until 5/13/1822. The courtsruled that John Wolfe had intended to defraud his wife and children whenhe sold the property, and that the others had a right to their shares.After ashort while in NC, John Wolfe came back to Scott Co and bought a smallfarm on Copper Creek. Eventually, he convinced his wife Catherine to livewith him again and she was living with him when he took his life.Thecourt records indicate that he assisted with a murder in Berkley Co, WV,and may have been the murderer. He said that was the major cause of hisbehavior, according to testimony from his wife, and that was the reasonhe took his life.He apparently built a sizable amount of wealth by makingand selling various alcoholic beverages. He operated a still even when he




lived for a year with Jacob Peters after returning from NC.After the murderin Berkley Co, WV, John fled to SC and GA. After about 12-18 months, hereturned and immediately took his family to NC where he resided a fewyears before settling on the North Fork of the Holston River in presentday Scott Co, VA. Some references indicate that he had lived with theMoravians at some time (maybe as a child?). He is buried in the Lane-Wisley Cemetery GC#28 just to the right ofthe Mannville Road about 1-2 miles past the Courthouse in Gat e City.There is a huge tree at the head of his grave. According to family legends,family members planted either a seed or small tree from Tennessee orKentucky to mark the grave. The type of tree has not been identified tomy knowledge. The legend says that it is so hard that an ax will bounceoff it. Inspection of the tree shows that it is in the white oak family, butseems to be different than other white oaks in this area. Apparently, thegrave site is on the land owned by the Wolfe family at the time of hisdeath, and some legends say that it was Abraham Lane's farm.
