Notes for Lauren Mattyse Bancker, Jr.:[Laurens Matyse Bancker.GED]

Laurens Mattyse Bancker first appeared in America in Harlem, now the vicinity of 125th St. in New York City onTues. 11-7-1673. From where he came no one knows, but he was definitely of Dutch ancestry. It was thought heprobably arrived in this country aboard the ship Faith on 2-1658 from Denmark. He changed the spelling of hisname often and it confuses records kept back then. He pursued and wed Jannetie a "buxom Dutch maiden in ahomespun petticoat and stomacher". Their eldest children were baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church in N.Y.C.and it is assumed he settled in or near N.Y.C. around 1690. His wife died in 1701 and he then married Niesje DeGroot. They had five children. They settled on the estate of Frederick Philipse at Philipsburg Manor, N.Y.Laurens became one of the first members of the Sleepy Hollow Dutch Church, and it was from the records of thisancient church that the history of Laurens Bancker was found. He and his wife were both living at Sleepy Hollowas late as 1735, but nothing is known of him after that. (From the Banker Book, written by Howard Banker)

Mother and I visited the Sleepy Hollow Dutch Church in the 1970's. Attached to it is a very large cemetery. Theold section where the Bankers were was in the front and to the left when facing the church. Any markers that arethere are unreadable. We also saw the Philipseburg Manor, which is still there. Sleepy Hollow is not far fromNew York City.

Go to any main library and ask for inter-library loan of the book"A partial history and genealogy record of theBancker or Banker families of America, and in particular, "the decendants of Laurens Mattyse Banker" You willsee that some of the above is taken from that into on the book written in 1909 by Howard James Banker. What the above fails to mention correctly is the fact of the different variations of the family name.LaurensMattsen....Lowrens Mathysse...Laurens Matthyzen...Louwerens Mathys...Loutweyns Mattyse...LouwreijnsMatijas...Lowrens Banckert....Louwrens Mathysse Banckert....Yet 99% of the data is under the last name of Bankert! In many of the "Dutch" families of old, the clue to their parents first names as well as their grand parents comesfrom the first four children they had.Sometimes, you will see a child carrying the first and middle name which isreally the first and surname of a grand parents.Much like the scandinavians, the Dutch used the name of"Mattyse" to say son or "any son" of....Which in this case would mean that Laurens Mattyse was the "son" of aman first name of Laurens. Now don't dash off and change all your male names cause this is only hearsay fromyears ago.Unproven is the chance that Laurens father may have been "Jans" or "Janzs." Gerrit who may or maynot have been a brother of Laurens or some sort of a relative, oddly has a couple references to his father beingnamed "Janzs" or "Jans." This don't gotta mean they were brothers and no one can prove this as yet, and thatproof may lay hidden in the Netherlands someplace. The person that did the research for the book mentioned above did very little tracing of people in question.I dobelieve that only two tries were made to locate any person on the list, and then show the, "nothing more can befound on this person." One's first thought is perhaps that individual is dead, forget trying to locate them. Had Iused this same defeatest appraoch, my search would have ended back in 1976, a year after I began the search. Iam not exagerating when I say that it took near 1000 letters all over the place before I began to find relatives. Ieven have had people reply eventuallu, such as the one took 8 years to answer a letter sent her, and a fella sent meone after 20 years. The long standin family comments regarding relationship between Laurens family line and my own Banker linewas the use of the letter "C". We put the letter "C" in out name so it was BANCKER in order to tell our familyapart from them Damn German Bankers." In many instances the "C" was dropped once they came to America, buta few have commented on adding it again cause them "Damn Bankers are moving in all around us."I can not prove or more important, disprove that these two families are related.I can only offer this that thecountry once known as Friesland became the Netherlands in 1500, oddly enough as far back as the Bancker datagoes. The other thing is that most all this area, as well as the rest of Europe was populated by them "Germans."Sooooo, if anyone can "C" their way clear to share their data, any data, back in time or up to present day, all yougotta do is send it to this old guy and I shall gladly sort it out for all to share.I offer what ever info is here , and challenge others to send me what ever they have to prove I ain't related to theBanckers in some way. [Laurens Matyse Bancker.GED]

Jannetie Hendrickse's parents were Hendrick Harmensen and Egbertie Jans. Her father came from Amsterdam in1658. He married Egbetie and settled in the Flatlands and they had 5 children. He died about 1674. Soonthereafter Egbertie married Jan Sneediker.

Note: The reason Jannetie's maiden name is not her father's last name is that Dutch girls in those days took theirfather's first name as their maiden name and the adding of the se at the end of the name indicates (son of, ordaughter of) that person. (From the Banker Book, written by Howard Banker)
