In 1787, the Land Act and Ordinances forming the Great Northwest Territory was made,


embracing all the area west of New York and Pennsylvania, between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River and east of the Mississippi. This added great impetus to the Westward movement, and by the 1800, there we re 1,000,0000 people over the mountains.

Joseph marry first to Catherine Thompson in 1771 from whom he had one so n generally known as George"Esquire". He married secondly August 22, 177 Rebecca Mitchell, daughter of William Mitchell, by whom he had the following children: Mary, William, John (soldier- War of 1812), Ann, James MItchel,Joseph, Rebecca, and Samuel Junkin.

William and his two wives were born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania: William, John, Ann, and James MIchel were born in a block house in Lexington, Kentucky. The rest were born in Paris, Kentucky.

William Galloway was in Clark's army that marched against and routed the Indians at Old Chilicothe in 1780. He came out to Kentucky with his brothers John, Samuel, and James. On their approach the Indians reduced the town to ashes. They took up their line of march from where the town o f Cincinnati now stands for the Indians towns. They reached"Old Town" about 2 p.m. and August 6, 1780. They found the town not only abandoned bu t most of the houses burned down or burning, having been fired that day . The army camped that night and on the following morning cut down several hundred acres of corn and about 4 p.m. took up their line of march to t he Piqua towns, 12 miles distant in Clark County. (For full account see H owe's "History of Ohio" and Bradford's "Notes on Kentucky.") (Roy's S. King's Book "Ancestral Pilgrimage Along Life's Pathway.)A string of Forts a few miles apart on the road or trail to Lexington For t were constructed along Bear Grass Creek a few miles above Louisville. Large fields of grain intervened. These Forts consisted of a number of lo g houses built around so as to enclose a lot and were occupied by the Colonists. William lived in these Forts some two or three years (1780-1782 ) during which time he and James at least were with General George Rogers Clark's Expedition against Old Chillicother (Old Town) and walked back to the mouth of the LIcking RIver and were discharged. He then moved t o Lexington. Here he received two lots for building cabins on them. He lived there two or three years. His first wife never came west, she died i n Pennsylvania. He married his second wife Rebecca Mitchell, in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and she came west with him to the forts and to Lexington. She was one of the first four women in Lexington, the other three were Mrs. Barton, Mrs. John (mother of Col. Richard M. Johnson) and Mrs. Samuel Stevenson. While here he secured a claim on the south bank of Stone y Creek (Stoner) including all the ground for two or three miles above, a nd as many below and around where Paris now stand, all a wilderness. Her e he erected his cabin and spent the remainder of his days . He was an elder in the Ceceder Church, a great lover of peace and good wi ll. During the Continental Land law suits, about conflicting land title s in which he, like most of the Kentuckians lost heavily., he might be se en locking arms and walking around with his opponent. There is no evidence that he ever commenced a prosecution. Still he held a large tract of land on which he died on January 17, 1794 after he willed all of his land t o his children.

Joseph's daughter Ann Galloway married James Stevenson, son of Samuel Stevenson and Jane Gay on April 3, 1805. Her marriage was the second in Northern Greene County, Ohio and was attended by everyone for miles around. T he crowd was so large that it was held out doors and logs were rolled u p for seats. Notes for Peter Begley:On February 23, 1774, Peter bought 400 acres in Northampton County, North Carolina for 100pounds in Virginia money. In his will dated, March 1, 1756, he gave his children, William,Henry, Jane, Sarah, and Amy 10 shillings current money of Virginia each. To his son, George,he gave his plantation on the Black Swamp containing 250 acres. There was mention ofadditional land on the Roanoke River which George was to receive if William refused "to makeover the land,". William refused so George paid him 40 pounds. Peter also gave George fourhead of cattle, a feather bed, furniture, a chest, a gun, a sword, an iron pot, and a crosscut saw.Peter gave his son, James, the plantation of 355 acres on which he was living. James alsoreceived a feather bed, furniture, a gun, a sword, a chest, 6 head of cattle, a brass kettle, an ironpot, a spit, bottles, and his cider mill. The rest of his estate was to be owned by his daughter,Mary, during her lifetime and then go to his sons George and James. The will was presented tothe court on October 20, 1758.
