From the Winona Republican-Herald, 6 Mar 1907, p. 3: AN INDUSTRY FOR WINONA A Small Factory is to be Operatin inThis City by TwoLocal Men ---------MAKE EUREKA MOP WRINGER The Device is Practical One and isBeing Received With Much Favor--- Many of the Machines Are Nowin Use Here. --------- A new manufacturing industry is now being started in Winona on a small scale with every prospectthat it will grow to much larger proportions. The gentlemen back of the enterprise are L. Thurow andArthur J. Smith, and the article which they have started to make is the Eureka mop wringer. The deviceis a practical one and has already found much favor with those who have given it a trial. It is theinvention of Mr. Thurow. The first machine was made in WInona about four months ago. The many good points of the device and the favor with which it has been received have encouragedMesssrs. Thurow and Smith to engage in its manufacture. Up to the present time they have had themachine made at some of the woodworking plants in the city, but now they have decided to engage in itsmanufacture themselves, and have accordingly proceeded to the erection and equipment of a smallfactory budiling and expect to begin making the mop wringers in a about a week or two. The factorybuiling is located on West Howard street and is a frame structure 20 by 35 feet in size and two storieshigh. The manufacturing business will be carried on on the ground floor and the second floor will beused for storage. An electric motor will furnish the desired power. There are already fifty of these machines in use in WInona and these are creating a demand for more.At the courthouse and the Winona they are in use. A few shipments have been made outside the city.Withe the completion and equipment of the factory building an endeavor will be made to push the sale



of the machines, and it is expected the business will grow very considerably in the near future. The Eureka mop wringer is buildt and designed for speed, durability, service and strength. With it a awonderful pressure is produced with only light leverage power aided by four rollers. Large rollersspread the mop and small rollers regulate the speed. The machine is being made in three different sizes,ten inch for flat or residnece use, twelve inch a medium size for general work, and the large fourteen inchfor all around work. The movement of the mop thru the rollers is produced by turning a small crank,doing away with the use of both feet and also the strain of the back. The two main rollers of the wringerare of hardwood. The first or feed roller is deeply corregated as to more easily raise the mop thru therollers. Both rollers are deeply grooved on each side crossways so to prevent the water from flowingover the edges of the pail. The pail may be quickly changed or emptied without moving any part of thewringer. From the Winona Republican-Herald, 17 Oct 1907, p. 8: INDUSTRY OF BOX MAKING ---------Has Been Started in Winona and Ap-pears to Have BrightFuture ---------STARTED BY LOUIS THUROW If it Secures the Home Patronage itDeserves it Should Become a VerySuccessful Undertaking - On WestHoward Street --------- A manufacturing industry which has been started on a small scale but for which there appears to be alarge field if the encouragement of home patronage is bestowed is being carried on by Louis Thurow at625 West Howard street. Mr. Thorow has engaged in the manufacture of boxes. He has since thewinter been associated wtih A.J. Smisth in the making of patent mop wringers, and now the box makingwill be carried on at the same place, but it is expected to enlarge the industry considerably. While Mr. Thurow has been interested in this business for some little time the work has been done byCharles Beeman, but now Mr. Thorow has resigned his poisition with the Empire Lumber company andis giving his whole time to this work. At present Mr. Beeman is not there owing to an injury he recentlyreceived to one of his fingers, but when he has recovered from this he will return. The box factory is now at work on a large order received from the Interestate Packing company forcrates for its products. The demand for these creates will be more or less permanent and will alone givequite a little business to the factory. THre are many other manufacturing institutions here which use agood many boxes in the shipment of their product and Mr. Thurow proposed to docnuct his buisness insuch a way as to merit and receive this patronage. The quarters at present occupied on West Howard street are a two story barn. The lower floor ofthis has been fitted up into a workshop, and the upper floor is used for storage. FOr the present it islarge enough to meet needs, but if the business grows enlarged quarters will be provided as necessary.Mr. Thorow, who has carefully looked over the ground, figures that there is plenty of business in thisline in Winona to give steady employment to at least eight hands and he hopes to work up to the pointwhere this number will be engaged. Meanwhile the manufacture of the mop wringers will not be abandoned. An extended writeup ofthese wringers and their particular merits was given in these columns last spring. There are quite anumber of these wringers now in use in Winona and they have received the hearty endorsement of thoseusing them. As their merits become better known outside the city the demand for them is expected toincrease. As yet they have been but little represented on the road. But by pushing their sale the numberto be made could be increased quite materially Many a large manufacturing institution has grown from such a small beginning as this and Winona



desires to encourage small as well as large manufacturing institutions.

He came to Winona county in 1854, and settled in New Hartford township. He lived a quiet life,and devoted himself to his farm and his large family. He married Sarah Brown, who was born June 20,1832, and died in June 1902. In the family there were thirteen children, ten boys and three girls. Elevenof the thirteen lived to adult years, and of these, ten are still living.



From the Winona Republican-Herald, 13 June 1908: Dakota Another of the rapidly diminishing members of Winona county pioneers has passed away. James G.Wilson died at his home in Dakota Valley June 7 1908 at the advanced age of seventy-six years, threemonths and twenty-four days. The deceased was born at Plattsburgh, N.Y., and came to Minnesota in1854 and opened the farm which he has occupied ever since. He was joined in marriage to Sarah B.Brown a sister of the late Nathan Brown, the pioneer settler in Dakota. The marriage took place in 1852.Of this union were born thirteen children, three of whom are dead. The first Mrs. Brown died quite anumber of years ago and on June 6, 1907 Mr. Wilson contracted a second marriage with Emma Einfeldtof La Crosse who survives him. The funeral services were held June 9, conducted by Rev. C. F.Dykeman. Interment was made in the cemetery about a mile and a half west of the village of Dakota,which was laid out as a burial place a number of years ago and is located near the residence of thedeceased. It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the west. Because the house wasunable to hold the assembled number of people the services were held in the open air on the cemeterygrounds. The grave was decked with garlands of flowers placed there by those who loved him best.Kind friends sang hymns of comfort and Rev. Dykeman pronounced and the people returned to theirhomes. Seven of the children were present at the funeral. Mr. Wilson possessed a robust and vigorousintellect, but lived rather a retired life, fond of horticulture and gardening, intimately known to but fewand esteemed most of his old neighbors and associates, who with him came here in territorial days andlabored to make Minnesota and abode of an industrious, intelligent and happy people. In the Wilson cemetery under the huge boughs of the large oak trees which cover the place, Mr. Dykemansaid in part to the large crowd of mourners and freinds, that he thought the service would be moreimpressive and appropriate right out in the open air, and in God's own temple he read a short sketch ofMr. Wilson's life and religious belief which was a Universalist. He then took up his theme which was toavoid or lessen future punishment; Justice and Truth doing all the good we can, and making all as happyas we can. He said Universalists were scarce and far between, and he believed that he was the onlyUniversalist minister in southern Minnesota. Mr. Dykeman spoke as only Mr. Dykeman can. It hasseldom been or privilege to listen to more truth. The choir were Wm. Winter, Mrs. Wolf, and Mrs.Workman.

There he spent three years. Then he went to Comanche, in the same state,and there on December 5, 1855, he married Mary Peterson, who was born July 26, 1836. In 1856, hewas persuaded by E.A. Gertzen to come to Winona. For a time he lived with Mr. Gertzen, and thenerected at 522 East Fifth Street, the cozy little house in which he has since made his home. For tenyears he engaged in the grocery business at the corner of Third and Kansas streets. This business wasnot, however, greatly to his liking, and he disposed of his store and started work on the North-Western,then in the course of construction between this place and Rochester. Then he went into the the generalbuilding and contracting business. In 1904 he retired. He is in excellent health, and is one of thesubstantial citizens of the city. He has been prominently identified with the Odd Fellows, and is one ofthe oldest members of that order in the city. He has also joined the Druids. The subject of this sketchhas eleven children, twenty grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The children are: Emma, wifeof Louis H. Thurow; Sophia, wife of H.F. The 1880's were tumultuous times in the land of Moravia. The native people were under the rule of theEmperor of Austria. Civil liberties were at a minimum, the economy was in a shambles, arable land hadlong ago been divided and subdivided, new farm land was impossible to obtain. Two and three familieswithin a residence were common. Wars and rumors of war abounded. Native sons were being conscriptedto serve and die for causes foreign to their homeland. Letters from relatives in the new land were frequently arriving. Although conceding that the work washard and the climate could be severe, the messages extolled the virtues of the home we so love, our greatstate of Texas! Everyone, it seemed, could own land, if they so chose. Crops were abundant, cattle fordairy and consumption purposes were everywhere, horses were in ample supply. Comfortable housingwas being quickly erected. Numerous Moravian natives, suppressed Austrian citizens, began to crowdthe offices of their village magistrates seeking official approval to emigrate. The applications, extant inofficial archives, portray in vivid detail the condition of the times. Dateline New York - 25 March 1884.Today the NEKAR, a sailing steam-assisted cargo vessel of German registry docked at New YorkHarbor. As is now common, she bore numerous immigrants to our country. Fortunately, the majority ofthem are destined to populate the frontier State of Texas and will be with us for only a brief stay. Wewish them all good fortune! The NEKAR was owned by the firm Norduetscher Lloyd of Bremen. From 1881 through at least 1885she plied the Atlantic between Bremen and New York on a monthly basis. In addition to cargo, thousandsof immigrants made the passage within her hold. Subsequent tales relate the hardships of this crossing -but that is another story. Arriving in "Amerika" aboard the NECKAR on that cold, foggy, March day were the following souls.Most ultimately settled in the Ennis, Texas area and, today, their descendants have multiplied manyhundred-fold and made enormous contributions to the homeland once adopted by their ancestors.
