Hans traveled to Denmark with his mother in 1912, and remained there until his father returned for him in 1914. He arrived at Ellis Island on April 29, 1914 after crossing on the "Oceanic" of the White Star Line (the same company which built and owned the "Titanic"). The ship departed for America from Southampton, England, and the trip took five days. Grandpa Hans said there were 3,000 passengers on the boat. He wore knee pants and button shoes, but had worn wooden shoes in Denmark. There were cattle and chickens in the bottom of the boat which were butchered on board. He remembered sailing into the harbor in New York, and he said that it snowed that day. He arrived in Dillon on May 5, 1914.

Hans C. Andersen died Friday at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. Hans was born in Dillon on July 26, 1906, son of Hans and Kirstine Andersen. At age six, he moved to Denmark with his mother. He returned to Dillon three years later, after the death of his mother and was raised in Bannack by his father and step-mother who were owners of the Ames Ranch. He attended Beaverhead County High School in Dillon.

He married Georgiana Crouse on August 15, 1933, and was manager of the Ames Ranch which was running 10,000 head of sheep at that time. The Ames Ranch was sold and Hans leased various ranches until 1942 when he bought 30,000 acres up the Blacktail, southeast of Dillon, which he successfully operated until his retirement in 1975. Because of his expertise in sheep raising, he produced high quality lambs and wool.

After his retirement, Hans enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic and Shrine orders. He supported Dillon community activities including Barrett Memorial Hospital and Western Montana College.

He is survived by his wife and his four children: Elaine Andersen Peterson, sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Verla Andersen and Dr. Charles (Mick) and Anne Andersen, daughter and son-in-law Sally and John Kreis and fourteen grandchildren: Greg Peterson, Cynthia Peterson Reedstrom, Cheryl Peterson Schurke, Mike Peterson, Julie Andersen Evans, Scott Andersen, Christine Andersen Mitchell, Kyle Andersen, Christopher, Rachelle, Hans Christian, and Bridget Andersen, Jeff and Heather Kreis. Additional survivors are brothers Jack and Harry Andersen and sisters Olga Schindler and Christine Peterson and ten great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Barrett Hospital Auxiliary, First Presbyterian Church of Dillon or to the donor's choice.

Hans Andersen Funeral Is Held Today

The funeral of Hans Andersen, 77, was held this afternoon from Brundage Chapel with interment being made in Mountain View Cemetery, Rev. Warren Kunkel was in charge of the service. Pall bearers were Bert Megquier, Clarence Andersen, Nels Lauritsen, Chris Peterson, Ras Hansen, and C.E. Blinn.

Mr. Andersen passed away Friday afternoon in a Butte hospital. He had been a prominent sheepman of Beaverhead County, coming here from Denmark in 1896. [He went initially to Elk Horn, Iowa, where he worked with his uncle.] He was born in Aero, Denmark, October 31, 1875. When he arrived in Beaverhead County he was first employed by the Gilbert Livestock ranch north of Dillon. After a year he returned to Denmark and married, bringing his bride back to Beaverhead County and forming a partnership with the late J. E. Morse known as the Ames Sheep Company. Later he continued the sheep business alone at which he was very successful.

Mr. Andersen had five children by his first marriage. Following the death of Mrs. Andersen he remarried and to this union one child was born, the second Mrs. Andersen preceding him in death.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters who are Jack Andersen of Alder, Harry Andersen of Wise River, Hans C. Andersen of Dillon, Mrs. Emil (Olga) Schindler of Jackson, and Mrs. Herbert (Christine) Petersen of Oakland, California. Grandchildren residing in the community are Elaine, Keith, Charles and Sally Andersen of Dillon and Francis and Barbara Schindler of Jackson. Grandchildren living in California are Marvin and Kenneth Petersen and Gloria, Ralph and Bernice Pedersen.

Mr. Andersen is also survived by sisters and brothers, Mrs. Berg Christensen, Peter, Matt and Albert Andersen of Beaverhead County, Mrs. Matt Groth in California, Andrew Andersen of Canada and Thomas Andersen of Denmark.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Remembrances of Christine Andersen (his daughter):

Hans Andersen loved to tease, and had a dry wit, "similar to her brother Jack." Hans was an excellent dancer and he excelled at wrestling. She remembers that her Dad was well respected and liked by his workers, and they would often stop by just to visit him, even after they left his employment. She remembers that he was quite sensitive to animals. As such he built the first lambing sheds in Beaverhead County. He loved horses and built a "beautiful" barn at Ames for the horses.

She recalls his generosity to those less fortunate. One day Jack came into Bannack and saw some lambs being slaughtered in another's family's barn. He reported it to his Dad, thinking that the animals must have been stolen from their herd. Her Dad told Jack, "If you were as hungry as that family, you would steal lambs, too." Notes for KIRSTINE Rasmussen:Christine Andersen (her daughter) says that Kirstine was the youngest of the family. She was not allowed to travel to the U.S. with out her older sister as a chaperone (Magdalena), though she had already married in Denmark.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Kirstine was about 3 months pregnant with her fifth child when she returned to Denmark. She had been told by the doctor in Dillon that she should not have any more children. And for the historical records: Today I looked in the church book for the parish of Rise and found out, that Kristine Rasmussen, when she died on Aero in 1912 while visiting with her children, had address in the town of Marstal, where she lived in a street called Møllergade (Miller's Street). This means, that she must have rented a house in Marstal instead of staying with her family in Lille Rise. This also means, that her closest living family connection here was my grandfather, who livedjust outside this town, and as he was always keen on people coming home from America with news, I am sure he must have visited her quite a lot.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ii. Lillie Johanna Andersen was born on 25 May 1904 in Dillon, Beaverhead, Montana. She died on 20 May 1949 in Oxnard, California. She married William Pedersen in Oct 1927 in Oakland, California, son of Sam Pedersen and Hansine Kristine Sorensen. He was born on 09 Aug 1905 in Fresno, California. He died on 08 Jan 1982 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California.

William (Bill) Pedersen was born in Fresno, CA on August 9, 1905, to Sam & Hansine Kristine (Sorensen) Pedersen. His siblings were: George, Alvilda, Peder, Alma and several deceased babies.

As a young man, Bill left Fresno and moved to Oakland to work in the Danish Creamery. During those years (1920's) he also worked on a fishing ship in Alaska and in a cabinet shop as a cabinet maker. He tried boxing and did so well, he had an offer to box in the "Golden Gloves", but he had severely injured his thumb on a band saw while working in the cabinet shop and it was too weak to hold up to his strong punches.

His sister, Alvildia Pedersen, introduced him to Lillie Johanna Andersen at a church function in Oakland, CA. They were married there in Oakland on October 14, 1927. They had four children: Howard William Pedersen born September 10, 1928, and died September 15, 1945 from a fall over a falls while at a summer church camp; Ralph Harvey Pedersen, born March 27, 1931, and died March 30, 1998; Gloria Christine Pedersen Nielsen, born June 20, 1933, and Bernice Dorothy Pedersen Hawkins Whitfield McCrorie born May 15, 1943.

Ralph & Ruth (Hamiter) had two children: Phyllis Louise Pedersen Moe and Howard Walter Pedersen.

Gloria and John Nielsen had four children: Eric John Nielsen, Karen Elaine NielsenCrossland Parker, Kirsten Lillie Nielsen Lang Proctor, and Leif Howard Nielsen.

During their marriage, Bill & Lillie lived in King City, CA, Santa Maria, CA, Tracy, CA and El Rio, CA - all cities where he had dairy farms.

In 1938, the family moved to Nyland Acres, CA, where he bought a propane gas business. His company serviced all of Ventura County. Among his customers were Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Taylor, William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy), and Joel McCrae. The propane gas business was sold in 1948 and the family moved into the city of Oxnard, CA. Lillie Andersen, his wife, was born May 25, 1904, and died of cancer May 22, 1949.

Bill married Eva Simmons in October, 1950. In the fall of 1951, Bill, Eva, Ralph & Bernice moved to Santa Rosa, CA and lived on a 5 acre ranch and raised chickens, sheep and rabbits. (Gloria remained in Oxnard to finish college) In 1960, Bill retired, sold the ranch and moved into the city of Santa Rosa. Bill died January 8, 1982.

Notes for Emil Schindler:Emil Schindler passed away July 10, 1988, after an extended illness at Parkview Convalescent Center.

Mr. Schindler, 84, was born Jan 26, 1904, in Shelby, Nebraska, to Emma Benda and Joseph Schindler, early settlers in the Big Hole. He attended elementary school in districts 25 and 24 in Jackson and Beaverhead County High School. Mr. Schindler spent his entire life as a rancher. He moved to Dillon in 1978, remaining active in the ranching business until 1985.

Mr. Schindler prided himself on hard work and raising quality beef cattle. He volunteered his services on the Beaverhead County Weed Board. Mr. Schindler served as school board trustee for Districts 25 and 24 of Jackson for many years. He was a longtime 4H leader, served as council president and was on the State 4 H Council.

Mr. Schindler was largely responsible for actively starting the Church of the Big Hole and later seved as an elder in that church. He was always a willing, active participant in donating his services to numerous community projects.

Mr. Schinlder married Olga Andersen, Sept. 25, 1937, in Dillon. She survives, as do his children Francis and Diane Schindler of Jackson; Barbara and Bill Frederickson of Butte; and three grandchidren.

He was preceede in death by his sister, Wilhelmina "Mitzie" Skeeters.

Funeral sevice will be held on Tursday, at 11:00 a.m. at Brundage Chapel in Dillon.

v. Christine Hansine Andersen was born on 15 May 1912 in Lille Rise, Aero, Denmark. She married Herbert Peterson. He was born on 15 Apr 1909 in San Leandro, California. He died on 01 Nov 1985 in Calistoga, California.

Here you can see, that Kristine Hansine (named after both her parents as none of them were present at the christening) were baptized at home by the vicar and later presented in church on the 8th of september 1912. Notes for JOHANNE Kroman:Christine Andersen says that the Kroman name was adopted later. She can't remember the original surname. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Conversation with Ib Christensen (historian from Aero) says, "You are probably right that they did not use Kroman as family name, since this originally was a nickname. Also among siblings you may find some that used Kroman and others that did not. Often the males would use the nickname and females would not - this differs from family to family - as does the spelling of Kroman. (Kroman, Kromann, or Kromand) The name means innkeeper, since "Kro" = "Inn" and "mand" = "man" or "person". The first person that had the nickname was called Kroejer (in Danish Krøjer), which is local dialect for Innkeeper. The different spellings are caused by the different priests who for the major part, were not from the island, and therefore did not know the local dialect all too well, and therefore had different opinions as to the right spelling. John H. Anderson was born December 28,1873, on the island of Aero in Denmark. His father was a custom butcher with a family of eight sons and two daughters. When John was 16 he came to the United States, arriving at Elk Horn, Iowa, in the spring of 1889. He worked on his uncle's farm for three years and also received his citizenship papers.

In the early spring of 1892, he arrived in Dillon and went to work for Mr. Selway on his ranch that bordered Dillon on the north side in the area where the Lion's Den is now. He later leased the Billy Gilbert Ranch north of Dillon for two years. Then John and a Danish friend of his, as partners, operated a dairy on the place now owned by Gayle Chaffin on Grasshopper Creek, and sold milk and butter in Bannack. After selling the dairy business, like all ambitious young men, he tried the life of a cowboy. John trailed fat steers from the Big Hole Valley to Butte for the Butte Butcher Co.

In 1898 John went to work for J.E. Morse, a rancher with extensive properties and a large sheep operation. John began working with the sheep and that business soon became his way of life. He was the sheep foreman for Mr. Morse from 1900 to 1908.

John, in partnership with his brother Peter H. Anderson, bought their first two bands of sheep in 1905. John homesteaded on Carter Creek in Beaverhead County, seven miles east of Dillon, and his brother Pete homesteaded on Robb Creek on the Upper Ruby in Madison County. Pete managed their sheep while John continued to work for J.E. Morse until 1908, when Mr. Morse sold the operation of which John was in charge to the Beaverhead Ranch Co. After 1908, the Anderson brothers increased their holdings and purchased the Max Lauterbach Ranch and Livestock.

In 1915 John married Egedia Jepsen in Dillon. They had one son, John Jr. and three daughters Edna, Marie, and Clara.

During their partnership, John and Pete continued to expand and bought the Beaverhead Ranch Co.'s holdings in 1918, and the Lower Larbee Ranch and Elling Ranch in 1919. By 1923, the Andersons had put together a large sheep ranch operating approximately 28.000 head of sheep. In 1925, John and Pete dissolved the partnership, divided the property, and each continued in the sheep business for himself.

John lived in Dillon for 28 years, from 1892 to 1920. In the fall of 1920, he moved his family south of Alder. John continued to expand his operation during his lifetime and the ranch is still operated today by his son John H. Anderson, Jr., and family. The ranch where John and Egidia lived in Alder is the home of son-in-law and daughter Karl L. and Edna Sauerbier. John H. Anderson died January 6, 1950, at the age of 76. His wife, Egidia, passed away in October of 1954.

Albert Anderson Is Summoned--Funeral Friday

Albert C. Anderson, 80, prominent retired stockman of Beaverhead County, passed away Tuesday, February 14, at the Barrett hospital. He suffered a stroke 10 days before his death. He had been in ill health for some time.

Mr. Anderson was born in Oro [sic], Denmark, August 11, 1880. He came to the United States in 1897 and spent a short time in Elkhorn, Iowa with his uncle before settling in Beaverhead County in 1898. Soon after his arrival here he went to work for J.E. Morse, pioneer livestock man and rancher, and later became partners for a time. Shortly after, he started in the sheep business for himself and had holdings in Beaverhead and Madison Counties.

He returned to Denmark in 1910 where he met Sine Rasmussen who was later to become his wife. The marriage ceremony was performed in April, 1911, at the St. James Episcopal church by the Rev. S. D. Hooker.

Mr. Anderson was a life member of Evergreen Lodge No. 45 AF&AM in Lima, Royal Arch Masons, St. Elmo Commandery No. 7, Bagdad Temple, Order of Shrine in Butte, a 50 year member of the Danish Brotherhood of America and a member of the Lutheran faith.

Among the survivors besides his wife are his son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Ejner Anderson of Sheridan; two sons-in-law and daughters Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Benson of Dillon and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Gilbert of Downey, California.

Also surviving are grandchildren Ronald and Bernice Benson of Dillon, William, Helen, Sylvia and Norma Lou Anderson of Sheridan, Rodney and Beverly Gilbert of California. Surviving brothers are Matt of Dillon, Andrew in Canada and Thomas in Denmark. Surviving sisters are Mrs. Berg Christensen of Dillon and Mrs. Marie Groth of Oakland, California.

There are a number of nieces and nephews in Montana, Canada, and Denmark.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Brundage Chapel with the Rev. Arthur L. Peter H. Anderson, 75, prominent stockman of the Ruby and Beaverhead valleys was found dead in his Sheridan home by neighbors about 7 o'clock Monday night. Death was attributed to natural causes.

Friends, who went to the Anderson home to investigate when they noticed no sign of activity about the house for a long period, found the premises locked and forced entry. His nephew, Harry Andersen of Dillon, had gone to Sheridan to visit his uncle and found the door locked. Presuming Mr. Anderson had gone away, Harry left not knowing that his uncle had passed away.

Dr. R. H. Dyer, who was summoned to the home, estimated the elderly stockman had been dead for at least 36 hours. Mr. Anderson returned home recently to Sheridan from a visit with relatives in California.

He was a native of Denmark and had resided in the Ruby Valley since early in the century, making his home in Sheridan for a number of years. He also had extensive holdings in the Beaverhead Valley.

Mr. Anderson's wife, the former Edith Schowe, passed away several years ago. He was also preceded in death by brothers Hans of Dillon and John of Alder.

Survivors include a sister in Dillon, Mrs. Berg Christensen, and a sister Mrs. Marie Groth of Oakland, California; brothers Albert and Matt of Dillon, Andrew in Canada and Tom in Denmark; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. His body is in the Marsh Funeral Home.

Peter H. Anderson was born in Denmark in 1882. His father was a custom butcher with a family of eight sons and two daughters. Peter came to his uncle's farm in Elk Horn, Iowa in early spring of 1900. He worked for a time in Iowa, then came to Dillon, Montana later that year. Peter went to work for Mr. J. E. Morse, a rancher with extensive ranch and sheep operations on his Spur ranch. He later became foreman on the Spur Ranch and worked there until 1905. That same year, he joined his brother, John as a partner in the sheep business which John had started for himself. Peter homesteaded on Robb Creek in Madison County, and later acquired extensive holdings in that area, becoming one of Madison County's largest sheep operators. Pete and John operated as partners in the sheep business from 1905 until 1925. During this period they acquired extensive holdings in Madsion and Beaverhead Counties. During the peak of this operation, they ran in excess of 25,000 head of sheep.

In 1925, the partnership was dissolved, and the operation was divided. Both brothers continued operations as individuals and continued to expand their holdings.

Peter's home ranch for many years was south of Alder, approximately seven miles, on what was commonly known as the Harding Ranch. This ranch was sold in 1938 and the Ruby Dam was built. Peter later sold the range lands adjacent to the Ruby Dam to a group of ranchers for cattle summer range, now known as the Garden Creek Grazing Association. After the Ruby Dam was built, Peter and his wife lived on a place at Alder, later moving to a home in Sheridan.

Peter acquired extensive holdings on the upper Madison above Ennis which is known as the Missouri Flats. Later in the eraly 1940's, Pete sold his holdings on the Madison and acquired part of the Selway Sheep Company's holdings on Rock Creek, a tributary of Black Tail Creek and adjacent to his holdings on Robb Creek. Pete operated extensively in the sheep business in the area until his death.

The ranch was bought by a group of Ruby Valley Ranchers and operates today as a cattle summer range known as the Robb Creek Cattle Association.

Peter married Edith Schowe in Missoula on October 12, 1934. She preceded him in death on June 10, 1952. They had no children. Peter passed away in 1958, leaving his large estate to his surviving brothers and sisters, along with all the living nephews and nieces.

Notes for Anna Marie Jepsen:Keith Andersen says that "Marie" had an affair with "Mucky" MacDonald. She was contrite and wanted to restore her marriage with Pete, but he refused to take her back. He reportedly gave her a large sum of money ($10,000 or $20,000), but would not take her back. She never remarried.

Former shopkeeper Anna Marie Andersen, 98, died Tuesday in a Dillon nursing home after a lengthy illness. She was born June 9, 1882, in Aero, Denmark, to Jens Hansen Jepsen and Ella Marie Jepsen. She married Peter Andersen in Dillon on Jan. 15, 1915, and the couple ranched in Alder.

Mrs. Andersen ran a style shop in Dillon until her retirement. Graveside services were Friday at 10 in Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Harry Neeley officiating.Brundage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mads Olsen Andersen and Bertha Marie Madsen were married in Dillon, December 31, 1914. Both were emigrants from Denmark and both came from the island of Aero; Mads from the district of Lille Rise and Marie from Trappeskov. Mads, born in 1885, emigrated around the turn of the century, and Marie, born in 1890, came during the summer of 1914 shortly after World War I was declared, sailing through the mined waters of the North Sea. Following relatives to Montana, they engaged in ranching during the following years. Mads died in 1963 and Marie in 1978. The couple had two daughters, Helga Jones, 1915-1964, and Ethel Hawkins, born 1927. Four grandchildren survive: Major James B. Hawkins of Fort Benning, Georgia, Jane Marie Hawkins of San Francisco, John Hawkins of Dillon; and Russell Jones of Bozeman.

Christine Christensen, 91, a longtime resident of Beaverhead County, died last Wednesday (Jan. 14). She had been in failing health for a number of years. Born Christine Andersen in Lille Rise, Denmark on Aug. 24, 1889, she came to Dillon in 1908 to visit seven brothers who had left Denmark before she was old enough to remember them. She was the youngest of 12 children and the one who survived the longest. While visiting in Dillon, she met Berg Christensen who became her husband in 1909. Mr. Christensen died in 1961.

Notes for Berg Christensen:Berg Christensen came to America from Denmark in 1906. He claimed a homestead after settling in Dillon. There were many Danes in this area. He married Christine Andersen 25 Apr 1909. Their first child, born in 1910, did not survive. Their daughter, Alma, born in 1911 and son, Ejner, in 1913. After a trip back to Denmark in 1914, they bought the Perry Ranch at Red Rock and went into the sheeep business. A son, Erwin was born in 1917. Berg sold the Red Rock ranch and bought one near Bannack in partnership with Chirstine's brother, Mads Andersen. In 1919 Berg bought the Cottonwood Ranch south of Dell. The family lived there until 1942 when they moved to a house on South Washington street in Dillon. A daughter, Betty, was born in 1926. Following another trip to Denmark in 1938, Berg sold the Cottonwood Ranch and bought one on Rattlesnake Creek, west of Dillon. By the end of World War II, he was one of the largest sheep producers in Beaverhead County, owning land in the Centennial Valley, Sage Creekand Taylor Creek, together with ranches near Bannack and Rattlesnake Creek. Berg died 29 Nov 1961 and Christine died in Jan 1981. Their children are Alma Christensen married Ralph Wilson Whitehill. Ejner Christensen married Elsie Schwab. Notes for HANS Henningsen:Hans was supposed to have married a daughter from a farm in St. Rise (old no. 173), where the father had problems paying the taxes. A retirement contract was made between Hans and the father of the girl, and Hans took over the farm.

Hans never kept his promise to marry the daughter, and instead he married Sophia. Nine years later the daughter and her husband managed to get the farm from Hans and he moved to a small house in Risemark (old no. 202).

Johan was a "Sandemand," meaning a person who performed certain judicial functions in the village. From the old accounts of Graasten Manor between 1740 and 1741, we learn that he worked on the construction of the barn and bridge for 12 days, and 6 days on the new well, and to demolish the old baking oven as well as reconstructing the oven again. Payment for work on the baking oven was 4 RD (Rigsdaler=old Danish currency). He also supplied 6 oak boards for the well.

Notes for CHRISTIAN Ernst:Christian was a school teacher and court-writer in St. Rise. He was also an innkeeper. He did not keep his job as a teacher for very long, as seen in the following:

Duke Christian issued a written order, dated Glucksburg Castle, August 1, 1695. From the document it is learned that the organist in Rise, who was also the court-writer, was unable to conduct the school in a proper manner and neglected the school, with the result that the parents kept their children at home. He therefore hired Casper Johansen as the new schoolteacher and ordered that each father of a child should pay the teacher 20 mark (old currency) annually for each child from the age of 7 until such time when the child was confirmed, usually at the age of 14. Further each father should pay 5 mark each quarter of a year, whether the children went to school or not. Each farmer should further give some firewood to the school. Parents who kept their children at home, without a good reason, for one week would pay a fine of 5 1/2 mark.

The farmers complained about this, and in a new order dated November 6, 1695, the school fees were reduced.

Only 3 names of his children have been found, but he is presumed to have more because a child was born in 1680.

Peder was a clerk for Duke Christian at Graasten, Aero. When the Duke died on June 14, 1633, Peder was married to the Duke's Concubine Cathrine Griebels zu Lütkenburg, a daughter of Hans zu Lütkenburg.

Cathrine Griebels and Duke Christian had a daughter Sophie Hedvig b. ca 1625. Sophie Hedvig I believe was married to Jonas Weinstorff, Clerk at Graasten from 1642 to 1653. I think they had a daughter in 1673 called Sabina Weinstorff. This needs to be checked further. (from Ib Christensen in Aero)

Before Duke Christian died he wanted to secure the future for Cathrine Griebels and his daughter, wherefore he wrote his will on November 4, 1629, and left her a house in Aeroskobing with furniture, barn and garden, as well as the small island Dejroe where the Duke raised rabbits.

Shortly after Peder's marriage to Cathrine Griebels, Peder sold the house in Aeroskobing to Duke Philip for 1000 Rd. Peder became a merchant in Aeroskobing.

After Cathrine Griebels died ca. 1652, Peder Pilegaard was married to Anne or Anne Margrethe b. 1636 d. 1686.
