George E. Whitlock

NotesGeorge Whitlock was born in Stockport, New York in November, 1847. His parents were Ephraim and Georgianna Dikeman Whitlock. Atthe time he joined the army to serve during the Civil War he was a farmer. He enlisted in Company G, 159th Regiment as a private andwhen he was discharged he was a corporal in Company I, 54th Regiment of the New York State Volunteers. According to his dischargepapers he was 5'5" tall, had fair complexion, blue eyes. One document lists his hair as sandy and the other as red. We were always underthe impression that he was at the Battle of Gettysburg, However, after checking his records, he was not in the Army at the time of the Battle.

1870 census - George and Mary Jane Clark were married at that time. George was 23 and a Carpenter and Mary Jane was 24 and aHomemaker. They lived in a town called Claverack in the County of Columbia, New York. Both of them were born in New York.

He married Mary Jane Clark and they had two daughters, Viola Margaret Whitlock who was my grandmother, my dad's mother, and AliceWhitlock (who at a young age was adopted by Bartley and Mary Van Bramer). According to the Camden, NJ City Directory of 1876-1877,the family was living at 501 Berkley Street. Ken and I checked out the location in Camden and there are just empty lots and old warehousetype buildings at this time. However, ftom riding around some other streets, it probably once was a very nice neighborhood. A UnitedMethodist Church and school are located on the comer of Berkley and Broadway. According to records ftom the State ofNJ Alice was bornin Camden, NJ and her parents were George and Mary Jane Clark Whitlock. At that time George's occupation was listed as a housecarpenter.

The 1880 census places, George, his second wife, Elizabeth McGreedy ftom Pottsville, PA. and daughter Viola in Jersey City, NJ. At thattime Alice had already been adopted and on the 1880 census is listed as the adopted daughter of the Van Bramers living in Ghent Town,Columbia County, NY.

Notes1910 Census lists Viola as having 3 children, 2 surviving. We know that James passed away in 1905.There is no mention of Charles O'Connor.

My father always referred to his mother's name as being Viola Margaret. Upon checking the marriage certificate and other certificates Ireceived from Our Lady of Grace in Hoboken, some indicate her name as Margaret V. Her name received at Confirmation was Veronica andthis appears as her first name on James' Baptismal Certificate. I never got to meet my grandmother as she passed away before my birth.However, because of the wonderful things my mom and dad told me about her, I know she was a very special person and I have always felt acloseness to her. I really missed knowing her.

She was a very active woman, involved in church organizations, the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) as her father George Whlitlock wasin the Civil War.

In her death notice it indicates that she was a member of the Chester A. Arthur Circle of the Ladies of the G.A.R, and the Christian WoernerAuxiliary of the Sons of Union Veterans. In the Christian Woerner Auxiliary she held every office in the local group; state offices andnational offices. During World War I she volunteered at the Benson Club, the service club on Washington Street maintained as aheadquarters for the Catholic soldiers. She was also a member of the Rosary Society at Our Lady of Grace Church. She also assisted Dr.Frank Armstrong, former rector ofSt. Paul's Episcopal Church in Hoboken, in founding the World War Shrine in St. Paul's Church.
