There was also a Charles Brazaw on the 1793 Bourbon County tax list which is likely the same person. It is believed by Brewsaugh researchers that Charles’ original surname was probably Brousseau, Bourrassa, or Broussard. Charles moved his family to Harrison County, Kentucky sometime in around 1821, as they appear on the 1821 tax list. It is believed he died soonafter as Peggy appears on the 1822 tax list without him. In May 1841, Margaret appeared before the court in Harrison County to show cause why Rachel and Emily, infant daughters of her son James, should not be bound out. In 1842, James appeared before the court for the same purpose. In 1847, James appeared before the court to show cause why his son Jesse should not be bound out, however, the court ruled that Jesse would be bound as an apprentice to Adam Juett until he turned 21 years of age. It appears that James’ wife Mildred may have deserted him. Charles and Margaret may have had an additional daughter named Mildred. What is known is that Mildred had five children by William Eskridge: George, Frances, Rebecca, William, and Salinda. These children sometimes used the name Brusaw, other times Eskridge. However, instead of being a daughter to Charles and Margaret, this might have been Mildred Bryan Brusaw, who married James and appeared to desert him and their children. For now, I’m leaning that way and not listing her as one of Charles’ children. Margaret’s will, written on October 6, 1842 and probated November 16, 1842 made the following provisions: “To Richard B. - my 25 acres, to James - $1, to Burton $1, to Margaret $1.” Richard and his wife Elizabeth could not read or write, and around 1850 they resided with brother Burton and his family as farm hands. Burton resided in Cynthiana and in 1860; his real estate was

Burton and his family as farm hands. Burton resided in Cynthiana and in 1860; his real estate was valued at $85 and his personal value at $16. Daughter Margaret’s maiden name on her marriage certificate appeared as “Bressou.” John’s son, Alexander Brusaw, was a tanner by trade. He drowned. One sources shows a different marriage for Burton’s daughter Mary, to Jacob M. Evans, on January 7, 1869. It is possible she had two marriages, but I don’t have anything to back this up. There is a discrepancy in Burton Brusaw, Jr.’s wife, Sally’s maiden name. One source says Lawinson, another Lemmon.

64 - 65 OLD CITIZENS, ETC.

--------------------------------------------------CHRONICLES OF CYNTHIANA.

Thomas Cason, the great-grandfather of Mrs. Oteria Day Frisbie, was born in Spottsylvania county, VA. He was a man of unusual strength of character, and possessed a fine mind. He married Nancy Day. Their children were Jack, Estus, Lucinda, Eliza, John, and Nelson. Thomas Cason died and his widow came to Kentucky in 1836, and brought a large number of slaves, and settled where her grandson, Lewis Day, once judge of the county court of Harrison county, Kentucky, where he lived and died. The maternal grandfather of Mrs. Frisbie-Cason married the widow Green. The ancestors of Judge Lewis Day on his father's side came from Spottsylvania county, VA, in the beginning of civilization in this part of Kentucky. One of their descendants says that they made a great mistake in not settling in the "Blue Grass" region, near where Lexington now stands. They camped one night, while on their journey to this part of Kentucky, on Elkhorn creek, But they did not like the appearance of the land-it was too level, and the soil looked too black, and as they had never seen such land, they left it and came to what was afterward Harrison county, and purchased a large tract of land in the locality of John S. Day's farm. Having many slaves, they cultivated their lands on an extensive scale. They also owned a distillery, and made copper-distilled whisky, which old people claim did not make people "crazy drunk," like the present spiritus frumenti. Andrew Moore married an aunt of Mrs. Frisbie, Candice, by name. The fame of her beauty lives to this day. Andrew Moore was clerk of the circuit court of this county. He was a kinsman of H. Coleman Moore, who left a fund at his death to be used in the education of destitute orphans. A handsome cenotaph has been placed in "Battle Grove Cemetery" to the memory of H. C. Moore, which will lie in ruins long before the benefactor to whom it was reared will be forgotten.--------------------------------------------------Rev War Archives File Number W 8574[CasonFarrington.FTW]

civilization in this part of Kentucky. Martha Keene was born about 1775.

Notes for Lewis Day Sr.:This family is confused. Lucy Gamble Day's father was one Lewis Day. It is claimed that her mother was one Martha Keen. There is a marriage record in 1796 in Spostylvania Co., VA, for Lewis Day and Martha Keen, and Keens also removed to and lived in Harrison Co. and Campbell Co., KY, which seems to follow the claims. The middle name Keene was passed down in the Benjamin Day line.

However, it is also claimed that Lewis Day married Ann Madison, and there is also evidence of this, and Ann's brother also removed to and lived in Harrison Co., KY. Moreover, the family name Madison was passed down in the Lucy G. (Day) Coleman line.

Lewis Day was one of the Justices of the Peace for Harrison Co., Kentucky.

Lewis Day (along with Nancy Day & John Crenshaw) witnessed the will of Susannah Chandler, dated 23 oct. 1811; proved April 1817. (Harrison Co., KY Will Book A, p. 364)

Lewis Day was one of several executors for the estate of William Kinman; will written Oct. 1811; probate Dec. 1825.

Lewis Day, Jr., was the executor of the estate of Obediah Terry; will written 1823; probate April 1826.

(Harrison Co., KY Order Book A, p. 242) Lewis Day later married widow Nancy Hawkins in 1826. And his son, Lewis Day, Jr., married the daughter of Nancy Hawkins--see notes below.

April, 1812-Polly Coleman, inft. orphan of Francis Coleman, decd., chose David Humphreys gdn. Sureties: Lewis Day, Chas. C. Hutcherson. (Harrison Co., KY Order Book A, p. 269)

Lewis Day's Will was dated June 11, 1829, and proved in Harrison Co., KY, in October 1830. It names: John M. Day, Lewis Day, Benjamin Day, Lucy [Day] Coleman, Patsy Anne Day and Eliza [Day] Keene. Witnesses were Samuel S. Fisher, Burrel Carter & John Crenshaw. (Harrison Co., KY Will Book B, p. 467)

This settles for certain that the Harrison Co., KY Lewis Day was in fact the father of Lucy Gamble (Day) Coleman (b. say Orange Co., VA), who married Covington Coleman 28 May 1814 in Harrison Co., KY. Given that the named Madison was passed down in the Coleman family, this would indicate a connection to the Madisons.

Benjamin Day gave one of his daughters the middle name Keen, so that suggests a connection

Benjamin Day gave one of his daughters the middle name Keen, so that suggests a connection there.

Might it be that this Lewis Day married three times, and had children by his first two wives, say Ann Madison and then Martha Keen/Keene?

A man named Lewis Day is supposed to have died in Cynthiana, KY in 1829 (this is in Harrison Co., KY). Is he the same Lewis Day who supposedly lived in Campbell County, Kentucky, and is said to have died in the 1820s?

The following record may shed some light on the confusion here:(need to obtain)Keen, JonathanApril 10, 1824Inventory and appraisal of estate of Jonathen Keen, deceased; dower to Lucy Keen, land on Licking River(Campbell Co., KY Will Book B, p. 119)

This Lewis Day is said to have come from King William Co. and/or Hanover Co., VA. It is claimed that he was the husband of Ann "Nancy" Madison, daughter of John and Mary (Cluverius) Madison (they were the grandparents of President James Madison). He is claimed also to be the husband of Martha Keene. Lewis Day married (second or third) Mrs. Nancy Hawkins, widow of Alexander, 31 August 1826 in Harrison Co., KY. Census records for 1820 and 1830 show two men named Lewis Day (presumably father and son) living in Harrison Co., KY. The younger Lewis Day married Eleanor Hawkins 23 November 1819 in Harrison Co., KY (Eleanor Hawkins was the daughter of Nancy who his father married--hence the younger bride and groom were step-siblings).

***This seems as good a place as any to enter this information. It is unclear exactly how these people relate to the Day family. Mrs. Nancy (Day) Cason was the widow of Thomas Cason who was born about 1762 and died in 1836. She is said to have been the grandmother of "Judge" Lewis Day of Harrison Co., Kentucky. Which Lewis Day was this? So, was Lewis Day's mother a Cason? Or was Nancy Day Cason married previously to a man named Day? Or is the account slightly confused? The Lewis Day who died in 1829 or 1830 could not have been the "Judge" referred to in the account, as he was born about 1770, and so he would be to be too old to be the grandson of Nancy (Day) Cason who is said to have been born about 1763 or 1765. Perhaps some research in Spottsylvania County, VA will help clear up the questions. This account is interesting as it gives some details of how the Day family came to Kentucky:

"CHRONICLES OF CYNTHIANA (Harrison Co., KY) "Thomas Cason [1762-1836], the great-grandfather of Mrs. C. Moore, which will lie in ruins long before the benefactor to whom it was reared will be forgotten."

And so who was "Judge Lewis Day" and how exactly was he related? If he was Nancy (Day) Cason's grandson, was she married previsously to a man named Day, and this Day was Judge Lewis Day's grandfather? Or did a daughter of Nancy (Day) Cason marry a day, and Judge Lewis Day was their son?

Nancy (Day) Cason (b. abt. 1763/65) is said to be the daughter of Lewis John Day, Sr. and Lucy Chandler. Nancy (Day) Casson, at age 75, applied for widow's pension on 7 July 1838 in Harrison Co., KY. Her declaration was attested to by son John Cason, Miles Wigglesworth, Claibourn Chandler, Elizabeth Chandler (all in Nov 1839). At age 85, Nancy was living with the family of Matthias and Jane Lair in Harrison Co., KY (1850 U.S. census, Harrison Co., Dist. 2 Family #723).(SOURCE: "Cason Cousins" by T. Cason, 1995)

***Another man named Lewis Day lived in Fleming Co., KY (immediately south of Mason Co.) and married Kittie McIntire there in 1813. They are probably the same who appear in the 1820 census:

Lewis T. Day (b. abt. 1791 say in Fleming Co., KY) was the son of Truman Thomas Day (1764-1855) and Mary Saunders (abt. 1770-1812). He married first Catherine "Kittie" McIntire 18 May 1813 in Fleming Co., KY; she was the daughter of Daniel McIntire and "Miss Weaver", natives of VA who removed to Kentucky, and settled near Lexington. Lewis and Catherine moved to what would become Audrain Co., MO in 1830 (which was, at the time, attached to surrounding organized counties, Audrain County being organized in 1836). Catherine "Kittie" (McIntire) Day died in Audrain Co., MO 15 Sep 1848. Lewis married second Margaret Jane Gray 15 May 1849 in Middeltown, Montgomery Co., MO. Lewis T. Day died 4 April 1852 in Middletown, Montgomery Co., MO.

It is unclear how or if these "other" Lewis Days relate to this family.

Four miles east of Cynthiana on the main highway to Millersburg stands the oldest Baptist Church this side of the Alleghenies, that makes the unique claim of being the only original church on the original site and that has been in continuous service since its beginning. There are several other churches that were constituted a few years earlier but the sites of these have been changed or the building destroyed or their services discontinued. This church was founded 28 years before one was started in Cynthiana sending her pastors to help form the Particular Baptist Church at Cynthiana, and for the next 25 years members from her ranks were joining the so-called Particular Baptist Church at Belmont in Cynthiana.Near the waters of Indian Creek the pioneers that made the beginning of history in this section built their church of great white oak logs, vieing with one another in bringing the largest logs for its construction. There are legends and historical facts that center around this beautiful spont, Old Indian Creek, and it thrills us as we follow the trail of these early people and, in some cases, martyrs, and as we think of the dangers they encountered in the primitive wilderness at the mercy of the wild beasts. This church was established in 1790. Spencer, one of the most authentic historians, says "Probably by Augustine Eastin," but our records, and traditions, passed down by word of mouth in this neighborhood and by pioneer's descendants, say Rev Charles Webb was the first pastor. The Union Associational reocrds of 1813 name him as the pastor when the church was constituted. Later Rev Isaac Monson was a pastor also. These two pioneer Baptist preachers whose families intermarried, came through from VA together. The Associational records tell us the church was constituted in June 1790, and with 16 members was admitted into the Elkhorn Association that year. The messengers of the first meeting were William Cromwell and Thomas Hubbard; in 1791, Rev Charles Webb and Rev Isaac Monson; in

William Cromwell and Thomas Hubbard; in 1791, Rev Charles Webb and Rev Isaac Monson; in 1802, Gresham Forrest, J Mason, Thomas Veach, and these messengers reported 95 members; in 1803, Isaac Monson and Gresham Forrest reported 55 members. You can see here that the membership divided, reporting a loss of 40 members, and it was this year when it divided in so many other churches in the state, because of Arian doctrine that Augustine Eastin so strongly expounded. This doctrine at that time denied the sonsubstantial nature of the persons of the Trinity.Augustine Eastin was at first a Baptist and was a successful pastor at Coopers Run Church until under the administration of James Garrard, a Baptist preacher, who was elected to Governor in 1796. Gov Garrard appointed Harry Toulmin, a polished Unitarian preacher, as his secretary of State, and the Englishman, Mr Toulman, son converted the Governor to his religious sentiments and the Governor in turn led Mr Eastin. Mr Eastin was a brilliant man but very unstable because of the constant changing of his doctrine, being an imitator of men of distinction in the world. Due to this belief, Rev Eastin and his church at Coopers Run were excluded at the Elkhorn Association in 1803 from the fellowship of the Baptists. This brought a crisis in the church. In 1803 a division between Regular and Seperate Baptist and thus was formed the Second Baptist Church, referred to in a deed recorded in Bourbon County Court records. In 1808 there was a great depression in religion, about 37 churches in Elkhorn Association reporting only nine persons baptized. We ca

He also was a farmer and a Presbyterian. One story is told of him, that on one occasion a party of Indians had stolen his and his neighbors horses. After a hasty preparation of ammunition and food, he followed the Indians on foot, overtaking them in the middle of the night at their camp near Covington. Waiting until the Indians were asleep, he crept in and cut the halters of his and his neighbors horses, then turned and fired into the camp of Indians as a partingsalute. The hard walking in this effort strained his thigh muscles, an injury from which he never entirely recovered, Sterne's family lived near "Pinhook", now Crittenden, in Grant County. He was the overseer of the Tollgate at the junction of Gradnersville Road and U.S. 25 in Grant County. In 1800, Sterne was found on the Pendleton County tax list, owing no land at this time.--------------------------------------------------

Notes for Aaron Ashbrook:Aaron’s son Aaron was granted a 400 acre plantation originally willed from his father to his brother, John, after John was killed. In 1786, he moved his family to Redstone Old Fort, Pennsylvania, and in 1788 to Bourbon County, Kentucky, where he purchased a tract of land on Huston’s Fork, a branch of the Licking River.

Notes for Felix Grundy Ashbrook:was at the fort of Boonesboro and helped to hold it during the war of 1812.

1820 census shows his household in Harrison Co. as having one woman and one man over 45 (him and Elizabeth), one man b/w 26-45 (likely his son Aaron), one woman b/w 16-26 (Aaron's wife Sarah), and two girls under 10 (their first two daughters Jane Huff and Cassandra). But by 1830 census Aaron's family had apparently moved out, because it lists just one man and one woman both b/w 60-70.

Felix Grundy Ashbrook took his family from Bourbon County to Harrison County in 1804, and live on a farm on Indian Creek until 1821 when they moved to a farm on Mill Creek near Cynthiana. Felix’s children, Aaron and Cassandra married brother and sister.

Hannah House was born in 1594. She died on 16 Feb 1633.

Notes for John Lothrop:http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=7518784According to "The Genealogical History of Edgar Hanks Evans" (research by Donald Lines Jacobus), John Lothrop or Lowthroppe (Thomas, Robert, John) was baptised in Etton, 20 Dec. 1584 and came to New England. He entered first Christ Church, College, Oxford for according to Foster's "Alumni Oxonienses" John Lothroppe of Yorkshire aged sixteen years, was admitted a pleb of Christ Church 15 Oct. 1602. Thence he went to Cambridge, where according to Venn's Alumni Cantabrigienses, John Loothrop, Lathrop or Lothrop, who was baptised at Etton, Yorkshire, 20 Dec. 1584, son of Thomas of Etton, was admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Queen's College in 1606, and to that of Master of Arts in 1609; a brief biographical notice of him is given by Venn. His brother Rev. Thomas Lothrop was admitted sizar at Queen's College, Cambridge 30 June 1601; took his bachelor's degree in 1604/5 and his master's degree in 1608; was rector of Dengie in Essex, 1613-1629 and died in 1629. Rev. John Lothrop soon located in Egerton, 48 miles southeast from London, in the Lower Half hundred of Calehill, Lathe of Scray, county Kent, as curate of the parish there. To this living he was appointed about 1611 by the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul. It was probably his first and only parishcharge as a minister of the English Church. Here Mr. Lothrop labored faithfully as long as his judgement could approve the ritual and government of the Church. But when he could no longer do this, we find him conscientiously renouncing his orders and asserting the right of still fulfilling a ministry to which his heart and his conscience had called him. Accordingly in 1623 his decision was made and he espoused the cause of the Independents. The date of his leaving Egerton was 1623 and next year he was called to the First Independent Church in London, then situated on Union St., Southwark, London now utterly gone. For being independent in thought he was arrested 22 Apr. 1632 and put in jail, along with a group of 24 others. In the old Clink prison, in Newgate, and in the Gatehouse, there men lingered for months. In the Spring of 1634, all but Mr. Lothrop were released on bail; he, their leader, the chief offender, was deemed too dangerous to be set at liberty. During the time he was in prison, a fatal illness was preying on his wife and bringing her fast to her end. Her name was Hannah House. "In New England's Memorials" by Nathaniel Morton, published in 1669, he says -- "His wife fell sick, of which sickness she died. He procured liberty of the bishop to visit his wife before her death, and commended her to God by prayer, who soon gave up the ghost. At his return to prison, his poor children, being many, repaired to the bishop at Lambeth and made known unto him their miserable condition by reason of their good father's being continued in close durance, who commiserated their condition so far as to grant him liberty, who soon after came over unto New England". In the Journal, kept by Governor Winthrop, under date of 18 Sept. 1634, appears, "The Griffin and another ship now arriving with about 200 passengers. Mr. Lothrop and Mr. Sims, two godly ministers coming in the same ship." On the next page of the journal it says - "Mr. Lothrop had been a pastor of a private congregation in London, and for the same, kept long in prison, upon refusal of the oath, ex-officio, being in Boston upon a sacrament day, after the sermon, desired leave of the

the oath, ex-officio, being in Boston upon a sacrament day, after the sermon, desired leave of the congregation to be present at the administration, but said that he durst not desire to partake in it, because he was not then in order, being dismissed from his former congregation, and he thought it not fit to be suddenly admitted into any other for example sake, and because of the deceitfulness of man's heart". On reaching Boston with that portion of his London flock who had accompanied him, he found already the preparations begun to welcome him to a new home in Scituate. Before 14 June 1635 he had taken a second wife. She was Anne Hammond, daughter of William Hammond, of Lavenham, England and Watertown, Mass.; she was baptised in Lavenham 14 July 1616, and her sister, Penina married Robert Linnell of Scituate and Barnstable; In the Scituate church records Rev. John Lothrop calls Linnell "my brother". When the Lothrop genealogy was published, little was known of Anne Hammond, but later information regarding her and the family in England appears in the New England Historical Genealogical Registers, 56; 184, 67;46, 261 and 84;437. When Rev. John Lothrop settled in Scituate he was granted a farm. While there differences arose between him and the people on the question of baptism and he removed to Barnstable, where he had a house lot granted him. He died in Barnstable 8 Nov. 1653; he left a will which had not been signed; and on 7 Mar. 1653/4 administration was granted on his estate to Mrs. Laythorpe". The will mentioned his wife; oldest son Thomas to have a house in Barnstable; son John in England and son Benjamin in Barnstable each to have a cow and 5 pounds; daughters Jane and Barbara had had their portions; to the rest of the children "both mine and my wife's" each a cow; to each of them one book; the rest of his library to be sold and the proceeds divided. More information can be found on various genealogies posts on the Internet. For example there is an interesting report about the imprisonment of John Lothrop and the fate of his family. On April 29, 1632, Reverend Lothropp's congregation was discovered by the Bishop's pursuant at the house of Mr. Humphrey Barnet and 42 members were apprehended there, but only 18 escaped. After two years in various prisons they were all released on bail except for Reverend Lothropp, for whom no favor could be obtained. He petitioned King Charles I for liberty to depart from the kingdom, but his petition was rejected. Apparently while John was in prison, his wife, Hannah fell sick, and he was permitted to visit her. Shortly after this she died either in April or May of 1634 and John's children were placed in the care of some friends, who could scarcely support them. As a result, John's children were often forced to live on the streets and beg for food. Some friends sent the children to petition the Bishop of Lambeth for their father's freedom, who upon realizing their pathetic state, ordered that Reverend John be released from prison in May or June of 1634.
