DEANWOOD COMMUNITY CENTER&LIBRARY: OPEN HOUSE
THURS.,SEPT.2,6:30 P.M.With a slowing economy many private development projects have
stalled, such as the large scale development of the Lincoln Heights-
Richardson Dwellings New Communities, rehabilitation of the Strand
Theatre, and the East Capitol Gateway grocery store. However, public
developments are progressing. In late July with much fanfare the long-
awaited Deanwood Community Center and Library opened. The
60,000+ square foot building includes an indoor pool with water slide,
over 20 computers, and meeting space. The building has been packed
to capacity, partly because it is new but mostly because it is needed.
Neighbors from as far away as Division Avenue & Blaine Street to
Kenilworth and Mayfair can be seen walking to the Center.
All, though, has not been welcomed at the Center. During its soft
opening there were safety disturbances. According to Commissioner
Brown, These reports of adults and youth fighting are unacceptable.
It is important to have adequate staffing levels and a police presence.
At the same time residents must say NOT IN MY CENTER! Mr.
Orvin Wright, Center Manager, agreed, The Deanwood Rec belongs
to everyone. Having a visible, positive adult population will go a long
way to curbing dust-ups.
The Centers offerings are for the whole family and individuals. In
fact, tryouts will start soon for adult, co-ed kickball! Check out the
open house on September 2, 6:30 p.m.! Call 671-3077 for more info.
H.D.WOODSON:TOWER OF POWERRISES AGAIN
The venerable educational and sports institution is taking shape after
being demolished over three years ago. The symbolic beam signing
and topping out ceremony is slated for Monday, August 30, 3:30 p.m.
Each fourth Wednesday there is a community meeting to give project
updates and get answers to questions about the curriculum and school
environment. Call 439-3277 or email [email protected] to be a
part of shaping our neighborhoods future.
Progress: Your timeline or mineAs an Advisory Neighborhood Commissionerelected to represent you and about 2000 otherneighbors, I grapple with how best to reach
out to neighbors that are busy but want to seecommunity improvement and have questionsabout government. Despite ANC7C having alistserv along with the Deanwood Citizens
Association what Ive found is many of us arenot reliant on the Internet. Instead neighborsreceive information through word-of-mouth orrandomly running into an informed neighbor.
I work as well and understand time constraintswith work, family, and other personalobligations. I want to make it as easy as
possible for us to work togetherbetter. Please feel free to call me at 202-398-5100. If
you see me walking the neighborhood (Illlikely be taking pictures of nuisances) stop me
and say, Hello, Neighbor! I want to hearfrom you!
Are you or a neighbor having trouble paying utility bills? Joint Utility Discount Day Friday, September 3, 8:00 a.m. 7:00p.m., Walter E Washington Convention Center (801 Mount Vernon Place Green/Yellow Metro) Call 311 for more info.
How do you get your neighborhood news?
