Testified to DC Council about vacant lots and buildings

In the wee hours of April 8, 2011 a massive fire swept through 811 48 th

Place NE, an abandoned house that has been a nuisance for years in the

community and on the block. The fire damaged the house next door.

The house fire also injured several firefighters. One first responder

spent months in the hospital and continues rehabilitation.

The fire was ruled arson and a suspect, Maurice Dews, is in jail and

awaiting trial. Dews is linked to several arson cases in NE DC and

Maryland. While the criminal case seems to moving forward the case

to condemn and tear down the burnt shell is languishing. The house

creates an eyesore, brings down our property values, and impacts our

public safety. 811 48th Place NE is providing a hiding place for illegal

drugs, firearms, and just sending a message of negativity. WE CANT

    STAND FOR IT!

The Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) is

sitting on the case, refusing to condemn 811 48 th Place NE and

scheduling the building to be torn down.

COMING SOONWal-Mart, Inc. is making plans to build a store at East Capitol StreetNE and 58th Street NE (Capitol Gateway). The land, which is 10 acres, belongs to the DC Housing Authority. The private development partneris A&R Development.

Wal-Mart is only one store planned for the 10 acres but it is a big part.

Mayor Gray has pledged a Community Partnership Initiative with Wal-

Mart. Capitol Gateway, however, will be governed by the planned unit

development (PUD) process, http://tiny.cc/dqvvb. The PUD process

allows for greater community input and implementation of a legally

binding Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). Do not fall into the

trap that this is a done deal! Stay positive, ask questions, get involved,

be a part of the progress and growth ofYOUR community!
