- We provide high quality training on topics of Strategic Planning, Performance Analytics, Continuous Improvement and Budgeting to City Employees

Created to support the City’s Strategic Plan and shift to Data-Driven Decision Making. Inspired by many including the Denver Peak Academy. Start as a collaborative pilot with support from many other departments. Still a cross-departmental effort with strong City executive support.

How we manage the Academy and select topics

While the budget department runs the Academy, it is advised by a Steering Committee that includes every internal services department. The topics are picked to align with the City’s strategic needs and City Manager’s Office is consulted on the proposed schedule every year.

Ruffin’s feedback to align training topics to corporate business needs was a pivotal and defining moment for the Academy. I think that’s contributed to its success and continued executive buy-in. The importance of executive buy-in Our City Manager's Office is an incredible champion of the Academy Parks and Utilities Directors are major supporters and it shows in their departmental attendance The importance of piloting things We started small and as things have worked well, we have grown the Academy We put a lot of thought and effort into each presentation We hold ourselves to high standards and start planning each presentation with the end in mind - what do we want the audience to walk out with We put the right people teaching the right classes Our instructors have both theoretical and practical expertise in the subjects they teach

• If teaching a complex subject, have multiple instructors present

• Be willing to adapt and change

• Need for resource bank

When teaching excel, you need extra instructors to help when folks fall behind. Resource bank so attendees can go back and reference the materials.
